Vidal turned four carries into six yards while catching both targets for 10 yards during the Chargers' 41-17 preseason loss to the 49ers on Thursday. He also returned one kickoff for 27 yards.
Vidal was the third running back with a touch behind Omarion Hampton and Keaton Mitchell, and Vidal's 19 snaps on offense were most among Chargers running backs. Vidal's production Thursday was not as good as his performance in the Chargers' preseason opener against the Texans, and it looks like Mitchell is in the lead for the RB2 job behind Hampton. Vidal got the start in Thursday's 27-7 preseason win over the Texans and rushed five times for eight yards while failing to catch his only target.
The Chargers rested starting running back Omarion Hampton for the preseason opener, and offseason addition Keaton Mitchell didn't register a touch. This was a quiet performance from Vidal, but the 2024 sixth-round pick remains in the mix for touches behind Hampton after a solid sophomore season in which Vidal produced 779 regular-season scrimmage yards.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Set to be utilized in committee
Vidal was listed a co-backup in the the Chargers' first unofficial depth chart Monday, Eric Smith of the team's official website reports.
Vidal and offseason addition Keaton Mitchell were listed as the top backup options behind starter Omarion Hampton ahead of the team's preseason opener Thursday in Houston. Vidal returned to Los Angeles on a one-year deal in the offseason after turning 155 carries into 643 yards and three scores across 13 regular-season contests in 2025, and he's expected to be utilized as a part of a backfield committee in 2026. New offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel outlined that he will use all three of Hampton, Vidal and Mitchell every game, leaning on the "hot hand," which he described as "bad news" for fantasy managers and good news for him.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Officially back with Bolts
Vidal signed his exclusive-rights free-agent tender with the Chargers on Tuesday, Howard Balzer of USA Today reports.
Los Angeles tendered the 2024 sixth-round pick as an ERFA in early March. The Chargers' offseason has seen Najee Harris (Achilles) depart in free agency, though the addition of Keaton Mitchell from Baltimore represents a new option in the backfield and potential competition for Vidal's grip on the No. 2 role behind Omarion Hampton. That said, Vidal has to be considered the favorite for the job after he broke out for 643 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 155 carries across 13 regular-season appearances in 2025, even if Mitchell ultimately sees more pass-catching reps.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Garners ERFA tender from Bolts
The Chargers placed an exclusive-rights free-agent tender on Vidal on Friday.
It essentially locks Vidal in for the 2026 season after he got extended run last season following injuries to both Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris (Achilles). With Harris headed for free agency, Vidal could enter next season as the RB2 to Hampton after Vidal posted a 155-643-3 rushing line across 13 regular-season appearances in 2025. He also added 16 catches for 136 yards and one additional touchdown.
