Steelers' Lew Nichols: Elevated for first time
Nichols was elevated from the Steelers' practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
Nichols has been on the Steelers' practice squad all season. If he is active for game day and enters Sunday's game against the Colts, it will mark his first regular-season snaps as a pro. Per Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Nichols will line up for a special teams role, if active.

Nichols signed with Pittsburgh's practice squad Wednesday.
Nichols went unclaimed on waivers, opening the door for him to remain in the Steelers organization as a depth option. He'll be joined on the practice squad by Trey Sermon while Jaylen Warren, Kaleb Johnson and Kenneth Gainwell begin the season on the 53-man roster.

The Steelers waived Nichols on Monday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
The 2023 seventh-rounder caught on with the Steelers in late July after being let go by the Eagles. He finished the preseason with 11 carries for 87 yards and five catches (on eight targets) for 36 yards. Nichols' efforts weren't enough to crack the 53-man roster, and he'll have the opportunity to sign with a team in need of backfield depth if he clears waivers.

It's been a roller-coaster season for Nichols, who was first cut by the Eagles in late August after spending the offseason on a reserve/future contract. The 2023 seventh-round pick spent most of the 2024 regular season as a free agent after failing to make the Eagles' 53-man roster at the end of training camp in late August. He had a brief stint on Philadelphia's practice squad in late December, but he subsequently let go on New Year's Eve. Nichols' addition to the Eagles' practice squad provides depth at running back due to Kenneth Gainwell being in concussion protocol while also working through a knee injury. The Eagles cut tight end Nick Muse in order to make room for Nichols on the practice squad.

Nichols signed a reserve/future contract with the Eagles in January, and he compiled 22 receiving yards on six catches while adding 30 rushing yards on 15 carries and 59 yards on three kickoff returns during the preseason. If he clears waivers, there's a good chance he joins Philadelphia's practice squad.
