  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: Officially placed on IR

The Cowboys placed Smith (thumb) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Smith is scheduled to miss four to six weeks to recover from a procedure on his injured thumb. He'll be required to miss at least the Cowboys' next four games, so the earliest that the fifth-year offensive lineman can play is Week 5 against the Buccaneers on Thursday, Oct. 8. T.J. Bass will serve as the Cowboys' starting left guard for as long as Smith is sidelined.

  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: Set to miss time due to thumb surgery

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that Smith is scheduled to undergo surgery on his injured thumb and will miss 4-to-6 weeks, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.

The Cowboys are likely to place Smith on injured reserve within the coming days. While Smith is out for at least a handful of games, the Cowboys will turn to T.J. Bass as their starting left guard.

  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: Will see reps at tackle

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters Wednesday that Smith (knee) will start at left guard this season but will also get some reps at left tackle during training camp, Nick Eatman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

Smith was a first-round selection of the Cowboys in the 2022 NFL Draft and started 17 games at left tackle as a rookie before moving to guard. The transition paid off for Tulsa product, who made the Pro Bowl in each of the last three years and was rewarded with a four-year, $98 million contract extension last September. Smith underwent minor cleanup surgery on his right knee in February and has recovered enough to participate in training camp practices.

  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: On track for OTAs

Smith underwent minor cleanup surgery on his right knee after the Pro Bowl, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.

With Smith now over two weeks removed from the procedure, the report indicates that the Cowboys' left guard is expected to be 100 percent before the start of the team's offseason program in April. The 2022 first-rounder appeared in 16 regular-season games in 2025 en route to earning his third straight Pro Bowl nod.

  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: Facing surgery, position change

Smith will have his knee injury evaluated by team doctors to determine whether surgery is needed, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Smith sustained a knee injury during training camp in August, though he managed to start in 16 regular-season games despite being a mainstay on the Cowboys' injury report. He could have surgery during the offseason to help with his recovery, but he could also be looking at a position change from left guard to left tackle after filling in for Tyler Guyton (ankle) at the latter position, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com. It looks to be a busy offseason for Smith, who signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension with Dallas in mid-September.

Smith was able to log a full practice after opening the week as a limited participant Wednesday with a knee injury. The 24-year-old appears to be all set to go for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Giants.

  • Cowboys' Tyler Smith: Logs limited session Wednesday

Smith (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

The fourth-year pro from Tulsa appears to have sustained a knee injury in the Week 17 win over the Commanders, as he was absent from Dallas' injury report prior to the Christmas Day contest. If Smith is sidelined for Sunday's matchup against the Giants, expect Nathan Thomas to draw a start at left tackle.
