Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Downgraded to out
Holcomb (illness) has been downgraded and ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Colts, Burt Lauten of the Steelers' official site reports.
The 29-year-old from North Carolina was unable to practice both Thursday and Friday due to an illness, so it's no surprise that he won't suit up Sunday. While Holcomb misses his first game of the season in Week 9, expect Malik Harrison to play an expanded role in Pittsburgh's inside linebacker corps.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Questionable for Week 9
Holcomb (illness) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Colts, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
Holcomb was added to the injury report Thursday and was unable to practice Thursday or Friday, putting his status for Week 9 in question. Payton Wilson would likely be in line to fill in at linebacker if Holcomb is unable to play.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Restructures contract
Holcomb agreed to a revised contract Thursday and will remain with the Steelers this coming season, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Prior to the adjustment, Holcomb was set to count $7.6 million against the salary cap, per Gerry DulacPittsburgh Post-Gazette, but the move will evidently save the Steelers $4 million against the cap and keep the linebacker with the team for his third consecutive season. The 28-year-old hasn't played since suffering a severe knee injury during Week 9 of the 2023 season, which some speculated could have been career threatening. Holcomb was fully practicing before the team's wild-card loss to the Ravens, so it's presumed he'll be available at the start of training camp next year.

Holcomb was sidelined for the entire 2024 regular season due to a knee injury he suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 campaign. Despite being a full participant in practice all week, Holcomb has not progressed enough his recovery to play Saturday. He is set to miss the entire 2024 season unless the Steelers win Saturday and advance to the AFC divisional round.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Could be ready for wild-card round
Holcomb (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice.
Holcomb was unable to play during the 2024 regular season while recovering from a knee injury that he suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 campaign. However, he did have his 21-day practice window to return from the PUP list last week and was a limited participant in practice. Given his ability to log a full practice Tuesday, Holcomb is trending towards being available for Saturday's wild-card game against the Ravens.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Has 21-day practice window opened
The Steelers designated Holcomb (knee) to return from the PUP list Tuesday, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.
Holcomb hasn't played since Week 9 of the 2023 season, when he suffered a severe knee injury in a game against the Titans. There was some initial speculation that the injury could be career-threatening, so it's a big positive for the veteran linebacker to have progressed far enough in his rehab to return to practice. It remains to be seen if Holcomb will see game action this season, either in Week 18 or at some point in the playoffs.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Starting season on PUP list
Holcomb (knee) was placed on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday.
Holcomb is still working his way back from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 season and he'll be forced to sit out at least the first four weeks of 2024. Once healthy, the 28-year-old is expected to operate as Pittsburgh's third option at interior linebacker behind Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts.

Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Starts camp on PUP list
The Steelers placed Holcomb (knee) on the active/PUP list Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Holcomb sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 9 of last season against the Titans. The injury was considered to be potentially career-ending, but the 2019 fifth-round linebacker out of North Carolina has spent the offseason rehabbing. Head coach Mike Tomlin said in June that he was hopeful Holcomb would be available at some point during training camp, per Nick Farabaugh of SteelersNow.com. Before sustaining the knee injury, Holcomb recorded 54 tackles (31 solo), two passes defended and two forced fumbles across eight regular-season games in 2023.
