  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Won't play Week 9 as expected

Surtain (pectoral) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Texans. The All-Pro corner sustained a pectoral injury during the Broncos' Week 8 win over the Cowboys, which carries a four-to-six week recovery timeline. Luca Evans of The Denver Post reported Wednesday that the Broncos aren't planning to place Surtain on injured reserve at this time in the hopes that he'll be available to return following the Week 12 bye. Ja'Quan McMillian appears to be the top candidate to start at outside corner opposite Riley Moss in Surtain's absence, which gives Kris Abrams-Draine and rookie first-rounder Jahdae Barron the opportunity for an increased role at the slot corner position.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Likely avoids IR

As of now, the Broncos are not planning on placing Surtain (pectoral) on the injured reserve list, Luca Evans of The Denver Post reports. Surtain is expected to miss four to six weeks after sustaining a pectoral injury during the Broncos' Week 8 win over the Cowboys. However, it doesn't appear as if Denver will place the star corner on IR, suggesting he could return sooner rather than later. While he's likely sidelined over the next couple of weeks, 2025 first-round pick Jahdae Barron is expected to have an increased defensive role as one of the team's top cornerbacks.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Could be headed for IR stint

Surtain could land on injured reserve after he suffered a pectoral strain in the team's 44-24 win over the Cowboys on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Surtain sustained the injury in the first half of the contest, ultimately not returning to action following the break. The cornerback will not need to undergo surgery, but he's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks while recovering from the injury, per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. Surtain is set to get a second opinion on the injury in the near future, but at minimum, he can be considered week-to-week for the time being.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Exits with lower leg injury

Surtain (lower leg) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. Surtain sustained the injury in the first quarter while breaking up a pass attempt from Dak Prescott to George Pickens. Kris Abrams-Draine is in line for more snaps at outside corner for as long as Surtain is on the sidelines being evaluated by medical staff.

Surtain was named the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports. Surtain became the first cornerback to win DPOY since Stephon Gilmore in 2019, while the former was just the second Bronco all-time to win the award after linebacker Randy Gradishar did so in 1978. Surtain appeared in 16 regular-season games in 2024, recording 45 total tackles (34 solo), 11 passes defensed, including four interceptions, one of which he returned for a 100-yard pick-six in Week 5 versus the Raiders. • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Estimated as DNP

Surtain (concussion) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's practice estimation. Surtain sustained a concussion in the Broncos' Week 6 loss to the Chargers, so it's no surprise he was estimated as a non-participant Monday. Surtain suffered a concussion Sunday against the Chargers and will not return, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. Surtain suffered the injury on the first play of the game and will now enter the league's five-step concussion protocols. • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Has fifth-year option picked up

The Broncos picked up the fifth-year option on Surtain's rookie contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Overall, he has seven interceptions among 36 pass defenses in 50 regular-season contests while averaging 63.6 tackles per 17 games played, making him a respectable option in IDP formats. The 23-year-old cornerback has proven to be an excellent corner in the league with the ability to make big plays on defense. With a solid start to the season under his belt, Surtain and the Broncos defense will face a big test in Week 6 when the Broncos visit the Chiefs.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Back in pads

Surtain (undisclosed) practiced in pads with the team Tuesday, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports. • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Impressive in sophomore season

Surtain made 60 tackles (45 solo) to go with 10 passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble while playing in all 17 games across the 2022 season. Surtain completed a strong second season in the Broncos' formidable secondary, leading the team in passes defended. The 22-year-old continues to prove why he was worth the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Surtain is still on his four-year rookie deal, so he remains under contract with the Broncos through the 2024 season. One of the league's young stars at cornerback, Surtain will look to build upon the impressive start to his career when he takes the field for the 2023 campaign.
