Sam Hartman: Let go by Washington
The Commanders waived Hartman on Sunday, Tom Pelissero of Netflix reports.
Hartman has evidently lost the backup quarterback battle to Marcus Mariota and seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. The 27-year-old will now be subject to waivers. If Hartman goes unclaimed, the Commanders would like to have the quarterback back with the team on the practice squad.

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Chance to be QB2 sans Mariota
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Marcus Mariota has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL in his right knee, which puts Hartman in position to be the Commanders' backup quarterback for the rest of the preseason.
Mariota picked up the injury during the Commanders' 20-7 preseason win over the Dolphins on Friday, and follow-up tests confirmed a sprained MCL. Hartman didn't have the best performance in the Commanders' preseason opener, completing eight of 15 passes for 80 yards and an interception while turning three carries into 13 yards. Given that he's been Washington's emergency QB3 since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in April 2024, Hartman figures to be ahead of Athan Kaliakmanis to be the team's backup quarterback behind Jayden Daniels while Mariota is sidelined, though the Commanders may bring in a veteran quarterback to compete for the QB2 job.

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Emergency QB versus Philadelphia
Hartman (coach's decision) is inactive but serving as the Commanders' emergency third quarterback Sunday versus the Eagles.
Hartman will once again operate as the team's No. 3 option at QB, a role he's become rather accustomed to this season. Josh Johnson will serve as the starting quarterback while Jeff Driskel gets the nod at backup against Philadelphia.

Hartman will only be eligible to suit up versus Dallas on Thursday if both Josh Johnson and Jeff Driskel are forced out of the Christmas Day contest. The Commanders signed Hartman from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday.
Hartman has been on the Commanders' practice squad since late August after failing to make the team's 53-man roster at the end of training camp. He has been signed to the active roster to serve as the Commanders' emergency third quarterback behind Josh Johnson and Jeff Driskel for Thursday's game against the Cowboys due to the absences of Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (hand). As the emergency QB3, Hartman would be prohibited from playing in Week 17 unless Johnson and Driskel were both to leave the game due to injury, illness or ejection. Hartman has not played in a regular-season game since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in April of 2024.

Hartman was unable to beat out veteran Josh Johnson for the QB3 spot on the Commanders' 53-man roster, but the former will stick around as the team's quarterback on the practice squad. Hartman saw action in all three of Washington's preseason contests, completing 25 of 46 passes for 207 yards, but he also threw four interceptions. The 26-year-old spent the majority of the 2024 campaign on the Commanders practice squad, and he appears potentially destined to rejoin their practice unit ahead of 2025.

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Struggles in preseason start
Hartman completed nine of 19 passes for 64 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Friday's 48-18 preseason loss to the Patriots. He added one rushing attempt for six yards.
Hartman got the start with Jayden Daniels resting and Marcus Mariota (lower leg) unavailable. The former Notre Dame quarterback played deep into the second quarter before being replaced by veteran Josh Johnson, who threw for 173 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Hartman and Johnson will continue to compete for the third spot on the depth chart in Washington's second preseason game, Aug. 18 against the Bengals.

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Starting in preseason opener
Hartman will be the Commanders' starting quarterback for Friday's preseason game against the Patriots, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
With Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota (lower leg) not suiting up, Hartman will command the offense to begin Friday's game while Josh Johnson serves as the backup. Hartman spent most of the 2024 season on the Commanders' practice squad and will get the first crack over Johnson to audition for the QB3 job.

The Commanders signed Hartman to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Hartman signed with the Commanders in late April as an undrafted free agent following six years in college (five with Wake Forest, one with Notre Dame). He spent most of the year on Washington's practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp, but he had a brief stint on the Commanders' active roster due to Marcus Mariota landing on injured reserve in early September with a chest injury. Hartman would have a better chance at making Washington's 53-man roster for the 2025 campaign if Mariota opts to sign elsewhere in free agency.
