Player Outlook
Milton was traded from New England to Dallas and is now a backup to Dak Prescott. Milton has no Fantasy value without a Prescott injury, but he would be an intriguing waiver wire add should he be pressed into action. Milton played well in Week 18 with the Patriots, scoring 21.2 points in 6-point-per-passing-TD leagues. He threw for 241 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Produces two TDs against Falcons

Milton completed 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown and added 33 rushing yards and a TD on four carries in Friday's 31-13 preseason win over Atlanta. After two very shaky exhibition performances, Milton looked a little more polished Friday, producing Dallas' first points on a one-yard run in the first quarter and then ending his night with a 29-yard TD connection with Jalen Brooks in the third on a pass that required a little finesse to loft it over the defender. The Cowboys traded for Milton to be their new No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott, and this showing may have done enough to reassure the team that the 2024 sixth-round pick is ready to handle the job.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Will start Saturday

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday that Milton (elbow) will start Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports. Milton was pulled from Dallas' preseason opener against the Rams last weekend early due to an elbow injury, but he's recovered quickly enough that he won't have to miss any exhibition action. The second-year quarterback completed completed 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception versus Los Angeles before being replaced by Will Grier, while also rushing five times for 22 yards.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Slated to start Saturday

Milton is in line to start Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. It's not surprising that the Cowboys are inclined to play it safe with starter Dak Prescott, a scenario that will allow the team to evaluate fellow QBs Milton and Will Grier. This will mark Milton's game debut with Dallas after coming over in an offseason trade with the Patriots.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Resumes practicing

Milton (thumb) is participating in practice Thursday, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Milton exited Tuesday's joint practice against the Rams early due to a thumb injury, but he's now back in action. The second-year signal-caller figures to be available for Saturday's preseason opener against Los Angeles. Milton is positioned as the No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott, with Will Grier present as the No. 3 option.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Bothered by thumb issue

Milton was removed from joint practice Tuesday due to a right thumb injury, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Milton was off to a good start at practice against the Rams, but his time was cut short due to the thumb issue. Jerry Jones spoke with the media after practice, explaining that Milton's removal Tuesday can be viewed as precautionary ahead of Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams. The injury is not expected to threaten the quarterback's availability for the contest.

  • Cowboys' Joe Milton: Dealing with hand injury

Milton did not finish Tuesday's joint practice with the Rams due to a hand injury, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Milton appeared to bang his throwing hand off a defender's helmet during practice, which prompted him to be sidelined for the rest of the day while Will Grier worked with the second-team offense. It's unclear how severe Milton's hand injury is, but it does put him in jeopardy of missing more practices this week, and potentially Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams.

  • Patriots' Joe Milton: Could be available for trade

The Patriots have discussed trading Milton and would like to send him to the right situation to continue his development, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports. Milton was drafted by the Jerod Mayo and Alex Van Pelt regime in New England last year, and both coaches have since been fired. On Monday, the Patriots signed Joshua Dobbs to serve as Drake Maye's veteran backup, leaving Milton the odd man out in New England. Milton saw extensive action in Week 18 last season and completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown. He rushed 10 times for 16 yards and an additional score, leading the Patriots to an upset win over the Bills and knocking New England out of the No. 1 pick in the 2025 Draft. Milton has loads of upside and a rocket arm and could probably fetch a mid-round pick.

  • Patriots' Joe Milton: Active for season finale

Milton is listed as active for Sunday's game versus the Bills. As is starter Drake Maye, as well as veteran backup Jacoby Brissett. However, Milton, who has been serving as the Patriots' No. 3 emergency quarterback, could potentially enter the team's season finale at some point in order to have him log some snaps to see how he looks, with an eye toward assessing whether he might be a viable No. 2 option behind Maye in 2025, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.

  • Patriots' Joe Milton: Inactive for Week 1

Milton is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bengals. Though Milton made the Patriots' 53-man roster, he remains the team's clear-cut No. 3 option at QB. He thus figures to be a regular scratch as long as both Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye are healthy.

  • Patriots' Joe Milton: Lands in New England

The Patriots selected Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 193rd overall. The Tennessee signal-caller predictably wowed folks with a bazooka of an arm during throwing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine and ran a respectable 4.62-second 40-yard dash time at 6-foot-5, 246 pounds, but he didn't carve out a full-time starting role until his sixth collegiate season in 2023. Even then, Milton failed to put up eye-popping stats in an offense in which Hendon Hooker had been a Heisman Trophy contender one year prior. Milton is the definition of a project at the quarterback position, and if he's unable to beat out Bailey Zappe for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind veteran Jacoby Brissett and first-round pick Drake Maye, Milton could be converted to tight end, where he might profile as an interesting prospect thanks to his size and athleticism.
