  • Desmond King: Brings end to career

King announced Wednesday via social media that he has retired from professional football.

The 30-year-old King entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick in 2017 and spent eight seasons in the league across stops with the Chargers, Titans, Texans, Steelers and Ravens. He played in 108 career games, logging 476 tackles (344 solo), 9.5 sacks, nine interceptions (two for touchdowns), and seven fumble recoveries (one for a touchdown). King also added two more scores on punt returns. He enjoyed his best season with the Chargers in 2018, when he earned first-team All-Pro honors as a defensive back and second-team All-Pro honors as a punt returner.

  • Desmond King: Cut by Texans

    Houston released King on Tuesday.

King had been on the roster bubble throughout the preseason and may have sealed his fate with a muffed punt return in Houston's preseason finale. The veteran cornerback has extensive NFL experience as both a defender and return man, so he should be able to land on a team's roster in short order.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Past groin issue

King (groin) returned one punt for eight yards and played 20 defensive snaps during Houston's 28-10 preseason win over the Giants on Saturday.

King was dealing with a groin injury earlier in August that forced him to miss Houston's first preseason contest, but it now appears that he's moved past the issue. The Iowa product is expected to remain one of the Texans' top cornerbacks in 2024 after tallying 47 total tackles, including 1.0 sacks, and defending two passes across seven regular-season games with Houston last season.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Missing preseason game

King (groin) is slated to miss Houston's preseason matchup against the Steelers on Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

King has appeared relatively healthy so far in camp, but he'll miss out on the Texans' first preseason outing with a groin injury. The 5-foot-10 cornerback was signed by Houston after being let go in the middle of the 2023 season from a mainly special teams role in Pittsburgh, finishing out the campaign with 47 tackles (22 solo) and one sack.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Returning to Houston

King and the Texans agreed on a one-year, $1.8 million contract Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

King signed with Houston in November after being cut by the Steelers a month earlier, appearing in their final seven games of the regular season as well as both of their postseason matchups. The defensive back racked up a total of 64 tackles, including 2.0 sacks, while also deflecting two passes in those nine games. King also operated as a return specialist for the Texans, compiling 109 yards on punt returns and another 23 yards on kick returns. He can earn up to $2.2 million in his new deal with Houston, and he'll look to carve out a consistent role with the ascending Texans.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Leads Houston in tackling

King finished Sunday's 26-3 win over the Titans with eight tackles (three solo).

Since joining the Texans on Nov. 29, King has 41 tackles (19 solo), including 1.0 sack, and two passes deflected in five games. He's moved into the primary nickelback position and has been effective behind starters Steven Nelson and Derek Stingley.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Productive day in defeat

King recorded 11 tackles, including two for a loss, and a pass defensed in the Texans' 36-22 loss to the Browns on Sunday.

The veteran has been active since taking over as Houston's nickelback in Week 13, recording double-digit tackles in three of four games. King has also has a sack in that span.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Season-best performance in win

King racked up 11 tackles (six solo) and one sack in Sunday's 19-16 overtime win over Tennessee.

King tallied his first sack of the year Sunday while also setting a new season-best mark in terms of tackles. The veteran has logged double-digit tackles in two of three games since becoming Houston's top nickelback, though Week 14 versus the Jets he logged just one tackle. Still, coming off a performance in which he handled a season-high 97 percent of defensive snaps, King is worth fantasy consideration in IDP formats heading into a Week 16 contest against the Browns.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Season-high tackle total Sunday

King recorded 10 tackles (five solo) in Sunday's 22-17 win versus the Broncos.

King also logged seven punt return yards in Week 13. Sunday's was the first game of the season in which he played more than one defensive snap (41), and he made an emphatic case to keep his new expanded role, leading Houston in tackles. He's projected to serve as the Texans' primary nickelback for the home stretch of the year.

  • Texans' Desmond King: Earns new role

King will become the Texans' primary nickelback beginning Sunday against the Broncos, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

King returned to Houston on Nov. 20 after being let go by the Steelers. The Iowa product will now step into a significant role due to the departure of Shaquill Griffin, who was waived Wednesday. King started 25 of 33 games for the Texans between 2021 and 2022 and recorded 182 tackles, 14 passes defended and five interceptions.
