Chiefs' Josh Simmons: Heads to IR
The Chiefs placed Simmons (lower back) on injured reserve Thursday.
Though he had been on the Chiefs' 53-man roster all season, Simmons had yet to make his 2026 debut while working his way back from a bulging and herniated disc in his lower back. Simmons appeared to be making strides in his recovery after he returned to practice last week as a limited participant, but he downgraded to no participation Wednesday after head trainer Rick Burkholder said that the second-year left tackle "plateaued in the rehab process," per Nate Taylor of ESPN.com. As a result, the Chiefs have opted to deactivate Simmons, who won't be eligible to play until Week 11 versus the Cardinals. Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson should continue to start at left tackle in Simmons' absence.

Wednesday's practice was Simmons' first since training camp, as he's been recovering from a bulging disc in his back. He was limited in all three practices, but he's not quite ready to make his 2026 debut. His next chance to do so is Week 7 against the Seahawks on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The second-year offensive lineman is set to miss each of the first four games of the regular season due to a bulging disc in his back, which has also prevented him from practicing. The Chiefs are on bye Week 5, so Simmons' next chance to make his 2026 debut is Week 6 against the Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 18. Simmons has a bulging disc in his lower back. Coach Andy Reid said the left tackle continues to make progress and regain strength but has not given any hints as to when the left tackle will return. The 2025 first-rounder played eight games in 2025 as a rookie but has been unable to suit up at all in 2026.
