  • Cardinals' Deionte Thompson: Back with team

The Cardinals activated Thompson off the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports. Thompson was placed on the list Nov. 24 and forced to miss Week 12's game against the Patriots. Now back healthy and returning to practice, Thompson is expected to assume his usual back-up safety duties behind Budda Baker, seeing the bulk of his snaps on special teams.

  • Cardinals' Deionte Thompson: Moves to COVID list

Thompson (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. It's unclear if Thompson tested positive for the virus or if he's a high-risk close contact of an infected individual. Regardless, the 23-year-old will be unavailable until he clears the league's COVID-19 protocols.

  • Cardinals' Deionte Thompson: Clear of injury report

Thompson (knee) isn't listed on Monday's estimated injury report, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports. The 23-year-old was inactive for Sunday's win over the Bills due to the knee issue, so it's a bit of a surprise to see him absent from the injury report only a day later. Thompson should fill a reserve role Thursday against the Seahawks, but he could have a larger workload if Budda Baker (groin) or Jalen Thompson (shoulder) are unable to play.

  • Cardinals' Deionte Thompson: Heading toward Week 4 start

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday that Thompson will start against the Panthers, Kevin Zimmerman of ArizonaSports.com reports. Thompson appears set to start at free safety in replacement of Budda Baker (thumb), who underwent surgery to repair a a UCL tear earlier this week. It's also possible that rookie first-round pick Isaiah Simmons could see occasional snaps at safety as long as Baker is sidelined.

  • Cardinals' Deionte Thompson: Ready for rookie minicamp

Thompson is fully recovered from the wrist injury that kept him from participating in the NFL Combine in March, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports. Thompson was a fifth-round selection by the Cardinals in last weekend's draft, and his stock may have dropped a bit due to the wrist injury. However, the 22-year-old has no lingering issues and should participate fully in Arizona's upcoming rookie minicamp. Thompson has the skill set and pedigree -- he started 17 games at safety for Alabama -- of a potential starter, but he seems likely to start out in a special teams role.
