Top Jeff Janis News

  • Browns' Jeff Janis: Cut by Browns

Janis had his contract terminated by the Browns on Friday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Janis was competing for a depth receiver role with the Browns, but his biggest strength was considered to be his special teams acumen. He spent his first four seasons with the Packers, but he was hoping for a new home in Cleveland. However, he has been sent packing once again and will be forced to find a new opportunity. His aforementioned special teams production will presumably elicit some calls from other teams.

  • Browns' Jeff Janis: Held without a catch

Janis was held without a catch during Friday's preseason game against the Bills.

Janis was targeted four times during his 11 offensive snaps but was unable to come down with any of them. The receiver has never been much of an offensive threat at the pro level, but he still has a great chance of making the Browns' roster given his proficiency on special teams.

  • Browns' Jeff Janis: Skips practice with knee injury

Janis was absent from Saturday's practice due to a knee injury, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Janis spent most of last season serving as a special teams player in Green Bay and will take aim at a similar role for the Browns this season. His attempt at earning a 53-man spot will temporarily be put on hold by the knee injury, and there's no indication at this point how long he's expected to remain sidelined.

  • Browns' Jeff Janis: Signs with Browns

Janis signed with the Browns on Friday.

A 2014 seventh-round pick, Janis primarily played on special teams during his four seasons in Green Bay, though he's best known for a 145-yard, two-touchdown performance in the divisional round of the 2015 playoffs, highlighted by a Hail Mary that sent the game to overtime. He never got a chance to build on that huge game, falling back to the bottom of the depth chart when the Green Bay receiving corps returned to health the following season. Assuming he sticks on the roster, Janis likely will make his mark in Cleveland on special teams, as the Browns appear set at wide receiver with the trio of Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry and Corey Coleman.

  • Packers' Jeff Janis: Catches just two passes in 2017

Janis caught two passes for 12 yards over 16 games during the 2017 season.

Janis did not catch a pass until Week 16, and the five targets he saw all season were his fewest since his rookie year of 2014. However, he managed to stay on the roster all season thanks to his superior skills on punt and kick coverage. With just 17 receptions over four seasons Janis is no longer really a fantasy prospect, but his work on special teams will give him a chance to stick around with the Packers in 2018.

  • Packers' Jeff Janis: Catches pass in Saturday's loss

Janis logged 12 offensive snaps and caught one of two targets for 12 yards in Saturday's 16-0 loss to the Vikings.

Primarily a special-teams contributor, Janis was pressed into his most extensive action on offense this season with No. 1 receiver Davante Adams (concussion) ruled out and fellow wideout Jordy Nelson (shoulder) departing early. Janis' workload still left him behind Randall Cobb (61 snaps), Geronimo Allison (53), Michael Clark (28) and Trevor Davis (16), so even if both Adams and Nelson are sidelined Week 17 against the Lions, Janis shouldn't be expected to dramatically boost his numbers.

  • Packers' Jeff Janis: Makes Packers' roster

Janis will open the regular season on the Packers' 53-man roster.

The Packers drafted a couple receivers later in this year's draft, but neither of them was able to overtake Janis, and he will have a roster spot heading into Week 1 for the fourth season in a row. He doesn't figure to see much action on offense but is on track to be the team's primary kick returner and also play a key role on other special teams units.

  • Packers' Jeff Janis: Another productive contest

Janis caught three passes for 63 yards in Saturday's preseason victory over the Redskins.

Janis was productive for the second straight exhibition outing and is averaging 20.8 yards on his four preseason receptions, while also adding a score. Given the Packers' wide receiver depth, it's more of a question if he'll make the cut than if he'll be involved in the offense when the regular season begins. However, he's a key special teams player and is the only Packer to return a kick this preseason, so he's looking like a good bet to break camp on the roster.
