Dustin Hopkins: Cut by Cleveland
The Browns released Hopkins on Tuesday, Kelsey Russo of the team's official site reports.
Hopkins logged the worst season of his NFL career with Cleveland in 2024, converting just 18 of 27 field-goal attempts (67 percent) and 17 of 20 extra-point tries across 16 regular-season appearances. The team will instead opt to keep Andre Szmyt while potentially adding further competition at the kicker spot. Hopkins will search for an opportunity elsewhere as he enters his age-35 season.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Misses XPA in preseason finale
Hopkins converted a 28-yard field goal and missed one of two extra-point kicks in Saturday's 19-17 preseason win over the Rams.
Hopkins, who was on shaky ground following his performance in 2024, may have left enough doubt in the mind of decision-makers when he was wide left on an XPA. Organizational confidence was already low on Hopkins, who watched his competitor for the job, Andre Szmyt, convert a game-winning kick from 37 yards out with no time left on the clock. The projection for an initial 53-man roster from Zac Jackson of The Athletic gives the edge to Szmyt, although it should be noted he's never kicked in a regular-season NFL game.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Takes care of business Saturday
Hopkins converted his lone field-goal attempt in Saturday's preseason win over the Eagles.
Hopkins booted a 46-yarder in the second quarter and has made both of his FGAs in the first two preseason games. He's also made 2-of-3 extra-point kicks, although the miss came on a bad snap. Hopkins is looking to rebound from a down year in 2024, when he made just 67 percent of his field-goal attempts and 85 percent of extra-point tries. That performance prompted the Browns to bring in Andre Szmyt, who converted two field goals and an extra point Saturday, to push Hopkins during training camp.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Looking to rebound in 2025
Hopkins is going to get every opportunity to show he's moved on from a frustrating 2024 season, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Hopkins was acquired from the Chargers ahead of the 2023 campaign and had a career year that season, drilling 33 of 36 field-goal attempts (91.7 percent) and 24 of 26 extra-point tries. Cleveland inked him to a three-year, $15.3 million extension through 2027, but the veteran kicker then posted the worst season of his career in 2024, making just 18 of 27 field goals (66.7 percent) and 17 of 20 extra points. The Browns have brought in Andre Szmyt to provide competition, but it sounds like Cleveland wants Hopkins to win this job. For fantasy purposes, the Browns don't project to be a high-scoring offense in 2025. That coupled with Hopkins' 2024 struggles don't make him a desirable target.

Hopkins converted his lone field-goal attempt and extra-point kick in Saturday's 35-10 loss to Baltimore in Week 18.
Hopkins buried a chip shot from 23 yards early in the second quarter before the game got away from the Browns, who were thinking only about touchdowns the rest of the way. The four points scored were the most for a Cleveland kicker since Week 12. After a very successful 2023 -- one that resulted in a three-year contract in the offseason -- Hopkins went the other way in 2024. Part of that is attributable to an offense that fell apart, but Hopkins made just 18 of 27 (67 percent) of his field-goal tries. That prompted the Browns to bring in kickers to challenge him, and head coach Kevin Stefanski made him inactive for Week 15. The offseason for the 3-14 Browns will bring change, which could include competition for Hopkins.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Makes lone kick in loss
Hopkins converted his lone field-goal attempt and did not have an extra-point try in Sunday's 20-3 loss to Miami in Week 17.
Hopkins, who missed six of his last nine field-goal attempts, drilled a chip shot from 25 yards for the Browns' only points. Cleveland's offense has not been conducive to kicker scoring since Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over at quarterback. The Browns have scored 16 points over the last three games, and kickers have attempted one field goal during that stretch.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Keeping kicking job another week
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Hopkins will be the team's kicker Sunday against Miami, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
Hopkins has been struggling mightily of late, and though he didn't attempt any field goals in last Sunday's loss to Cincinnati, he missed his lone extra-point attempt. That performance came one week after Hopkins received a game off to try to get back on the right track following a rough stretch. The veteran placekicker had missed both of his field-goal tries -- both under 50 yards -- the previous week and is just 2-for-7 on attempts since Cleveland's Week 10 bye. Nonetheless, the Browns will stick with Hopkins for at least one more contest despite signing Andre Szmyt to their practice squad Tuesday.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: Struggle continues
Hopkins did not attempt a field goal and missed his lone extra-point try in Sunday's 24-6 loss to Cincinnati in Week 16.
Hopkins, who was inactive Week 15 amid a five-game stretch of missed kicks, added another failed attempt to what has been a season gone wrong for both him and the Browns. The extra-point miss was Hopkins' third in 19 attempts; he's also missed nine of 25 field-goal tries. The kicker who replaced Hopkins last week, Riley Patterson, was poached by Atlanta off Cleveland's practice squad. As of Monday, the Browns don't have a backup option in place heading into Week 17 against Miami.

Hopkins added he had a good week of practice and feels confident going into the weekend. Whether it's Hopkins or Patterson kicking Sunday, the offense often plays from behind and is not conducive to a high volume of kicker-scoring opportunities.

Hopkins misfired on both field-goal attempts and converted two extra-point kicks in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Steelers in Week 14.
Hopkins missed wide left on a 38-yarder just before halftime and wasn't close on a 43-yarder he pushed on the first drive coming out of the break. If converted, those two field goals would have tied the game at 13-13. The Browns were in position to add another field goal in the fourth quarter, but coach Kevin Stefanski opted to punt, down 27-7 at the time, from the Steelers' 39-yard line. Hopkins has missed kicks in four of the last five games, going 3-for-9 during that stretch. There will most certainly be a competition next summer for the placekicking job.

Browns' Dustin Hopkins: One miss in loss
Hopkins converted one of two field-goal attempts and all three extra-point kicks in Monday's 41-32 loss to the Broncos in Week 13.
Hopkins missed from 47 yards out on Cleveland's opening drive and connected from 45 yards in the second quarter. The six-point night was the most in four games for Hopkins. The placekicker's 70-percent accuracy rate (16-of-23) on field goals is the least of the Browns' issues, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the team bring in competition next summer.
