Looney announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, Michael Elsen of the Giants' official site reports.

Looney signed a deal with the Giants over the weekend, but he opted to retire after going through a couple days of practice. The 30-year-old appeared in 104 games (42 starts) over his nine-year career with the Cowboys, 49ers and Titans.

  • Giants' Joe Looney: Signs with NYG

Looney agreed to sign with the Giants on Saturday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Looney will be reuniting with Jason Garrett, who was his head coach during the majority of his tenure with Dallas. It was reported that Looney was close to signing with the Giants last year before he ultimately decided to stay with the Cowboys. The 2012 fourth-round pick is likely to compete with Brett Heggie for the backup role behind Nick Gates.

  • Cowboys' Joe Looney: Lifted from IR

The Cowboys activated Looney (knee) from injured reserve Saturday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.

Looney returned to practice Wednesday and will return to action after spending the minimum three-game stint on IR. He should start at center Sunday against the Eagles, although it's still unsettled whether he'll immediately return to his starting role or if Tyler Biadasz will retain the gig for one more week.

  • Cowboys' Joe Looney: Receives return designation

Looney (knee) was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Rob Phillips of the Cowboys' official site reports.

The 30-year-old is returning to practice this week and could be activated for Sunday's game at Philadelphia since he's already spent the three-game minimum on injured reserve. However, Looney may need a bit more practice time before reaching game readiness, so a return in Week 9 seems like a safer bet.

  • Cowboys' Joe Looney: Placed on IR

The Cowboys placed Looney (knee) on injured reserve Saturday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

Looney was handed a 2-to-3 week recovery timeline following news that he suffered a sprained MCL in Week 4, and now he'll officially be shut down until Week 8. Expect Tyler Biadasz to start at center until Looney can return.
