Top Rockets News

  • Rockets' Tari Eason: Staying with Rockets

Eason agreed Thursday to a five-year, $81.5 million deal (fully guaranteed) to remain in Houston, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

Eason was selected by the Rockets with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Since then, the 25-year-old has appeared in 221 regular-season games for Houston, averaging 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 blocks and 1.3 steals over 23.6 minutes. Eason was on the radar of a few teams around the NBA, especially the Lakers. However, he will remain in Houston, where he will likely see most of his minutes off the bench. Eason isn't the most consistent scorer, and injuries have also been an issue. Still, he has value due to his defensive prowess and ability on the glass, which should come in handy for a Rockets team looking to win a championship.

  • Rockets' Marcus Smart: Joining Houston

Smart agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Rockets on Wednesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

With LeBron James expected to leave the Lakers, Smart declined his $5.4 million player option that would have kept him in Los Angeles for 2026-27 and will instead join Ime Udoka, who coached Smart for one season in Boston. That year, Smart won Defensive Player of the Year, and the Celtics reached the NBA Finals. Last regular season, the veteran guard averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 28.5 minutes per game over 62 appearances (54 starts). Smart figures to play a complementary role in Houston's backcourt, with Fred VanVleet (knee) working his way back to full strength.

  • Rockets' Bogdan Bogdanovic: Inks pact with Houston

Bogdanovic signed a one-year contract with the Rockets on Tuesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

After the Clippers declined their team option on Bogdanovic's contract, the veteran sharpshooter is set to head to Houston. The 33-year-old saw inconsistent burn with Los Angeles in 2025-26, averaging a career-low 7.4 points along with 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 19.7 minutes per showing across 23 regular-season appearances (three starts). He shot a career-worst 34.7 percent from deep last season but is a career 38.1 percent shooter from three-point range over nine seasons.

  • Rockets' JD Davison: Back with Houston

The Rockets are picking up the team option on Davison's contract Monday, per Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers.com.

Davison is set to reprise his role as emergency backcourt depth for the Rockets in 2026-27. Last regular season, the 2022 second-rounder averaged just 7.8 minutes per game across 28 appearances.

  • Rockets' Fred VanVleet: Exercises player option

VanVleet (knee) exercised his $25 million player option for 2026-27 on Monday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

VanVleet declined a $44.9 million option last offseason to sign a two-year, $50 million contract, but he tore his ACL a few months later while preparing for training camp. The veteran missed the entire 2025-26 campaign, and his status heading into next season remains unclear, though there's optimism he'll be ready for Opening Night. VanVleet hasn't played since the 2024-25 season, when he averaged 14.1 points, his fewest since 2018-19.

  • Rockets' Quadir Copeland: Joining Houston on two-way pact

Copeland agreed to a two-way contract with the Rockets on Wednesday, Dushawn London of 247sports.com reports.

Copeland didn't hear his name called in the 2026 NBA Draft but will get an opportunity with the Rockets. However, he'll likely spend the majority of his time with their G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Over 34 games with NC State in 2025-26, the 22-year-old guard averaged 13.9 points, 6.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 28.8 minutes per game.

  • Rockets' Bruce Thornton: Selected by Houston after trade-up

The Knicks selected Thornton with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and traded his rights to the Rockets, Jeff Goodman of Fieldof68.com reports.

After a four-year stint at Ohio State, the Buckeyes' all-time leading scorer will join the Rockets, who acquired the Nos. 31 and 55 picks in this year's draft in exchange for the Nos. 39 and 53 picks and a 2029 second-rounder. Thornton impressed in his final college season, averaging 19.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals while recording 55.4/40.0/82.9 shooting splits in 36.5 minutes per contest. He's a strong lead guard who will likely compete for backup minutes, especially if Aaron Holiday leaves in free agency.
