Baynes has agreed to a contract with the Brisbane Bullets of the Australian NBL, Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com reports. The contract has an NBA out, which will allow him to return to the NBA if he can find an interested team.
Baynes worked out for NBA teams in Las Vegas during Summer League, but he didn't find a suitor. He'll resume his playing career in the NBL with the hope of returning to the big league. Baynes was hospitalized for two months and needed to learn how to walk again following a spinal cord injury from a freak fall while playing for the Australian national team in the Tokyo Olympics last summer. The 35-year-old last played for the Raptors in 2020-21, where he averaged 6.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18.5 minutes. The 6-foot-10 center has shown upside as a rebounder with some floor-spacing ability (30.8 percent from three on 360 career attempts).
Baynes remains in the hospital with severe nerve damage in his neck following a freak accident in the locker room during one of Australia's Olympic games, and his status for the upcoming season is now in jeopardy, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
To add insult to injury, this news comes days after Baynes was waived by the Raptors. The veteran big man's health is the first priority at this point, as the news sounds more severe than initially reported. The injury is potentially career threatening, as any significant time missed for the 34-year-old would be difficult to return from.
