  • Giants' Yunior Marte: Piggybacks Wilkinson on Friday

Marte struck out two and allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks across five innings of relief in Friday's 10-6 loss to the Mets. After tossing 4.2 innings of one-run ball as a starter in his MLB debut last Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader versus the Diamondbacks, Marte was deployed as part of a piggyback tandem with Wilkinson. Both hurlers tossed exactly 62 pitches, but Marte worked longer and more effectively than Wilkinson, who yielded seven runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over three innings. Wilkinson has started in all four of his appearances with the Giants, but the Giants have limited him to less than four innings on three occasions. The Giants could continue to have Wilkinson and Marte work in piggyback arrangement when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up as the team looks to limit the workloads for both young pitchers down the stretch.

  • Giants' Yunior Marte: Does well in debut

Marte allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. Marte's major-league debut went well, but he came up an out short of qualifying for the win. He threw 48 of 76 pitches for strikes. Marte has a path to staying in the majors the rest of the way -- entering the doubleheader, the Giants had two holes in their rotation due to recent pitching injuries. Marte has logged a total of 112.1 innings this year, up from 102 last year, so there may be a slight workload restriction in place for the 23-year-old even if he sticks around.

  • Giants' Yunior Marte: Officially called up by San Francisco

The Giants selected Marte's contract from Double-A Richmond ahead of his scheduled start against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. The move is now official, with Marte joining the Giants to start in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. He has made 13 starts in Double-A since early June, posting a 3.92 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 72:22 K:BB over 64.1 innings. In corresponding moves, Seth Lonsway was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento and Casey Schmitt (knee) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
