Valera will undergo an MRI on his right elbow after exiting his most recent start for High-A Greenville last Thursday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Valera missed three months last season with right elbow inflammation. The 19-year-old was placed on Greenville's 7-day injured list Friday, and while the Red Sox seem optimistic that he's not dealing with structural damage to his elbow, more will be known once the imaging results are in. Valera boasts a 1.93 ERA and 17:4 K:BB over 9.1 frames so far this season with Greenville.

Red Sox's Juan Valera: Exits early with elbow issue
Rotowire
Valera exited his start Thursday against High-A Bowling Green in the second inning with right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Valera walked and struck out a batter in a scoreless first inning before he was forced to exit the game. The 19-year-old, who is one of Boston's top prospects, is without an official timeline for his return, but it wouldn't be surprising if he misses some time given the nature of the injury.

Red Sox's Juan Valera: Closing in on return
Rotowire
Valera (elbow) recently resumed throwing live batting practice and is expected to return from High-A Greenville's 60-day injured list before the end of the season, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
According to Speier, Valera's fastball has been clocked at 98-to-99 miles per hour during his most recent live sessions, so he looks to be close to fully recovered from the sore elbow that has kept him out of action since late May. Prior to landing on the IL, Valera posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 37:9 K:BB in 33.1 innings over eight starts with Greenville.
