  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Sent to minors after sluggish start

The White Sox optioned Smith to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

Smith was Chicago's Opening Day starter but finds himself back in the minors after putting up a 10.80 ERA, 2.52 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB over 8.1 innings in his first three starts. The right-hander should rejoin the Chicago rotation eventually, but he will try to get sorted out at Charlotte first. Jonathan Cannon had been on the same schedule as Smith at Charlotte and could be recalled to take the latter's spot in the big-league rotation Sunday in Kansas City.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Lasts three innings Wednesday

Smith (0-2) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Marlins after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and two walks across three innings. He fanned one.

Smith allowed four runs (three earned) and didn't even finish the second inning in his season debut against the Brewers on Thursday, and while he at least completed three frames this time around, the results were even worse. The White Sox don't have a lot of depth in their rotation, so Smith isn't at risk of losing his spot any time soon; however, the results have been pretty disappointing. Through two starts, he has allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits and four walks while fanning three across 4.2 innings, which translates to a bloated 19.29 ERA.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Exits early against Brewers

Smith (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Brewers, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out two over 1.2 innings.

Smith cruised through a scoreless first inning before unraveling in the second, with the damage highlighted by a bases-clearing double from William Contreras. After laboring through 54 pitches and only recording five outs, Thursday marked the shortest outing of the right-hander's young career. After an All-Star rookie campaign in 2025 that saw him hold a 3.81 ERA with 145 strikeouts in 146.1 innings, Smith will look to move past this disastrous performance and return to his previous form in his next scheduled start, which tentatively lines up to come in Miami.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Awarded Opening Day assignment

The White Sox announced Sunday that Smith will start their March 26 season opener in Milwaukee.

Coming off a rookie season in which he earned an All-Star nod while pitching to a 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 29 starts, Smith was the obvious choice to take the hill for the Opening Day game. The 25-year-old righty will be facing off against the organization that drafted him in 2021 before he joined the White Sox in the Rule 5 Draft following the 2024 season.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Works three innings

Smith allowed one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk across three innings during Saturday's Cactus League game against the Guardians.

This marked Smith's second start of spring training, and he worked up to 41 pitches. He threw 25 of those offerings for strikes in a relatively sharp outing. After posting a 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHP across 146.1 innings in 2025, Smith is a candidate to start Opening Day for the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Dominates in season finale

Smith (7-8) allowed one hit over six shutout innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Nationals.

Smith retired the first 16 batters he faced before giving up a single to Brady House. It was Smith's first quality start since Aug. 30, and he tied his season best with eight punchouts. He gave up one run and struck out 16 batters over 11 frames in his final two starts. The All-Star rookie finished his 2025 campaign with a 3.81 ERA and 145:58 K:BB through 146.1 innings. Smith posted a 3.17 ERA over his final 11 starts of the year.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Fans eight in no-decision

Smith came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees, allowing one run on five hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out eight.

The right-hander only tossed 60 of 93 pitches for strikes, with his inefficiency preventing him from working deeper into the game, but his eight strikeouts tied his season high. Smith hasn't been able to complete six innings in any of his four September starts, posting a 4.95 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB over 20 innings as he alternates bad outings with good ones. He'll try to break that pattern to close out the campaign, as he lines up for one more start on the final day of 2025 on the road against the Nationals.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Tagged with six runs

Smith (6-8) yielded six runs on nine hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Tuesday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Baltimore.

Smith worked through two scoreless frames before things unraveled. He was charged with two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings before getting the hook. It was the first time he didn't complete at least five innings since Aug. 1, and he took his first loss since July 6. Smith was 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA over nine starts since that last loss. He's now sporting a 4.06 ERA with a 129:54 K:BB through 135.1 innings on the year. Smith is projected for a road matchup with the Yankees next week.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Another winning effort

Smith (6-7) earned the win Thursday over the Rays, allowing four hits and a walk across 5.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four.

It's the third win in four starts for Smith, who's posted a 2.25 ERA with a 0.71 WHIP in that span (24 innings). Overall, the rookie right-hander sports a 3.78 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP and 122:53 K:BB in 26 starts (131 innings) this season. Smith will look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for next week at home against the Orioles.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Strikes out six in win

Smith (5-7) earned the win against the Tigers on Friday, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings.

Smith threw just 53 of 91 pitches for strikes but generated an impressive 15 whiffs and received strong support from the White Sox offense. Though he fell short of a third consecutive quality start, the 25-year-old has now completed at least five innings in six straight outings. He'll carry a 3.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 118:52 K:BB across 125.1 innings into a home matchup with the Rays next week.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Delivers another quality start

Smith didn't factor into the decision against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings.

The right-hander carried momentum from arguably his best outing of the season earlier in the week, a seven-inning, one-hit shutout of the Royals, and was sharp again against MLB's highest-scoring offense. Smith retired 10 of his first 11 batters before surrendering a solo homer to Aaron Judge in the fourth inning and later gave up another long ball to Austin Wells in the seventh. Aside from the two mistakes, Smith limited New York to just one other hit while racking up strikeouts. The 25-year-old will take a 3.81 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 112:50 K:BB across 120.1 innings into his next scheduled start against the Twins.
