  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Placed on IL at Triple-A

Criswell was placed on the 7-day injured list by Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday due to right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Criswell has spent most of the 2025 season at Triple-A but has appeared in seven games (one start) with the Red Sox, logging a 3.57 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings of work. He owns a 4-2 record, 3.70 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 68:28 K:BB across 65.2 innings at Triple-A and will now be unavailable for at least the next week.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. Criswell fired seven innings of one-run ball Friday against the Astros, but he'll end up as the roster casualty necessary to make room for Dustin May in Boston's rotation. Criswell sports a 3.57 ERA through 17.2 innings with the Red Sox this season and would likely be the next man up if any of Boston's starters need to miss time down the stretch.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Goes seven strong in spot start

Criswell did not factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Astros, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings. Criswell allowed just a solo homer in the second inning and otherwise kept the Astros in check, needing only 84 pitches to complete seven strong frames in his first start and seventh major-league appearance of the season. The 29-year-old now owns a 3.57 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings with the Red Sox, though Friday's outing was likely just a spot start with Dustin May in line to take the fifth spot in the team's rotation.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Starting Friday vs. Astros

Criswell will start Friday's game against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and will step into Boston's rotation to fill the spot vacated by Richard Fitts' demotion earlier this week. Criswell, who's worked out of the bullpen in each of his six MLB appearances this year, has a 5.06 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 innings. The 29-year-old righty may be in line for just a spot start, as the newly acquired Dustin May is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale and could stick as the fifth member of the rotation over Criswell moving forward.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Receives promotion

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Criswell will provide some much-needed length in the Boston bullpen after starter Richard Fitts lasted only four innings in Monday's loss to the Twins before being optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old righty has made six relief appearances with the Red Sox in 2025, allowing nine runs (six earned) with a 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 frames. Criswell had been starting at Triple-A could be a candidate to enter the rotation the next time Fitts' turn in the rotation comes up during this weekend's series versus the Astros.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Expected to be 27th man Wednesday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Criswell will likely be recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday's game versus the Reds following the completion of a suspended game, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Brayan Bello had been scheduled to start the regularly scheduled contest, but he will be handed the ball in the earlier suspended game instead. That leaves Criswell -- who will added as the 27th man -- to start the nightcap, although it's possible an opener is used ahead of him. Criswell would be pitching on three days' rest after going five innings and throwing 87 pitches Saturday for Worcester, so he'd likely have a truncated workload against Cincinnati.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Back in big leagues

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The Red Sox need some length in their bullpen after Richard Fitts recorded just three outs Monday against the Angels. Criswell has been rocked for eight runs (five earned) over 4.1 innings during his time with Boston this season but has collected a 1.52 ERA while being used primarily as a starter at Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Up as 27th man

The Red Sox added Criswell to their active roster to serve as the 27th man for Friday's doubleheader against Baltimore, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Criswell hasn't performed well with the Red Sox this season, allowing five earned runs in only 4.1 innings, but he owns a 1.99 ERA across 22.2 frames at Triple-A Worcester. He'll give Boston some extra bullpen depth for Friday's twin bill but is likely to return to the minors following the second game.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Recalled by Boston

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Criswell -- who is with the Red Sox in Detroit -- will take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Tanner Houck (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Criswell made three appearances for the Red Sox out of the bullpen this season, but he's started in four games in Triple-A and could be part of the rotation while Houck is on the shelf. Criswell made 18 starts (in 26 outings) for the Red Sox in 2024 and posted a 6-5 record with a 4.08 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB across 99.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Returned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. Criswell was up as the 27th man during Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians but did not make an appearance. The right-hander's last two appearances at Worcester were starts, and he'll likely rejoin its rotation this week.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Up as 27th man

The Red Sox added Criswell to the active roster to serve as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians. Since being sent down to Triple-A in early April, Criswell has turned in a 0.82 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 11 innings alongside a 16:3 K:BB. He'll help the Red Sox's bullpen get through Saturday's twin bill but is likely to head back to Worcester after Game 2 is finished.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Sent to minors

The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. After joining the rotation in mid-August as a replacement for James Paxton (calf) and covering at least three innings in each of his six ensuing outings, Criswell had worked out of the bullpen for his last two appearances, giving up a total of three runs (two earned) over two innings. With Richard Fitts overtaking him as the Red Sox's No. 5 starter and with Luis Garcia (elbow) returning from the injured list, Criswell will end up as an odd man out on the 28-man active roster. The 28-year-old righty owns a 4.08 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 99.1 innings with the Red Sox on the season.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Early exit Tuesday

Criswell came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. He failed to strike out a batter. He needed 72 pitches (46 strikes) to record 10 outs, and Criswell benefitted from some sloppy baserunning by Toronto just to do that well. The right-hander has thrown more than 70 pitches in three straight outings but has failed to last five innings in any of them, posting a 6.35 ERA, 2.29 WHIP and 5:8 K:BB in 11.1 frames over that rough stretch. The Red Sox have fallen four games back of the Twins for the final wild-card spot in the AL, and Criswell could have a very short leash in the rotation as a result. He currently lines up to make his next start on the road this weekend in Detroit.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Stumbles into win in bulk role

Criswell (5-4) picked up the win Friday's 12-10 victory over the Orioles, allowing six runs on nine hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out one. The Boston right-hander returned from the COVID-19 injured list and operated as a bulk reliever behind opener Brennan Bernardino. Criswell was roughed up by a stellar Orioles lineup and needed 79 pitches to record his 10 outs. Criswell can thank his offense for their generous run support, as he notched his sixth career win despite allowing a season-high 13 baserunners. With this six-run performance, his ERA rose more than half a run from 4.02 to 4.56. Criswell should make his next appearance against the Astros on the road next week, either as a bulk reliever or starter.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Expected to pitch Friday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Criswell (illness) is expected to be ready to return from the COVID-19 injured list to make a start or bulk-relief appearance Friday in Baltimore, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Friday is the first day he's eligible for activation from the COVID-19 IL. Criswell is poised to serve as the Red Sox's No. 5 starter indefinitely after James Paxton recently sustained a likely season-ending calf injury. The 28-year-old Criswell holds a 4.02 ERA and 56:17 K:BB over 71.2 innings in a swingman role for Boston this season.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Could need more than seven days

Criswell (illness) might not be ready for activation Friday, when he's first eligible to return from his seven-day stay on the COVID-19 injured list, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Criswell has dealt with some significant symptoms while on the COVID-19 IL, and while the Red Sox are hopeful that he can start Friday in Baltimore in place of James Paxton (calf), he sounds like he might need a bit more time to recover. Josh Winckowski would be a candidate to take the ball for Boston on Friday if Criswell isn't ready.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Moving to bullpen

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Criswell will shift to the bullpen following the team's recent acquisition of James Paxton, who will take over as the club's No. 5 starter, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Despite delivering his best start of the season in Tuesday's 6-0 win in Colorado -- he struck out four and allowed six baserunners over seven shutout innings -- Criswell will be the odd man out of the rotation as the Red Sox make room for Paxton. Criswel was available to pitch relief Saturday but wasn't used in the Red Sox's 11-8 extra-inning loss to the Yankees. According to Cora, Criswell will be used in higher-leverage spots as well as long relief, depending on how fresh his arm is.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Starting Friday

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester to start Friday's game against the Royals, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Criswell made 11 starts with the Red Sox earlier this season, but he's spent the better part of a month at Triple-A after being optioned June 18. However, with Josh Winckowski moving to the bullpen, Boston opted to bring Criswell back up to fill a rotation spot. Criswell has a 4.15 ERA and a 49:13 K:BB across 52.0 innings with the Red Sox this season.
... See More ... See Less
  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Option to start Friday

Criswell could be recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Friday against the Athletics, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Josh Winckowski is being shifted to the bullpen, creating an opening. Criswell struck out eight and allowed just one hit over six shutout innings in his last start for Worcester and would be on five days' rest Friday. Boston could also opt for a bullpen game versus Oakland.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Sent to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Criswell will give up his active roster spot to Chris Martin (personal), who's being activated from the 15-day IL. Criswell posted a 4.15 ERA across 52.0 innings with Boston and should be one of the first options the Red Sox look at if a starter were to get injured.
