The Royals recalled Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. Bowlan rejoins the big-league bullpen after three weeks at Omaha, filling the spot vacated by Bailey Falter (bicep), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Bowlan has a 4.73 ERA and a 24:11 K:BB across 26.2 innings for the Royals this season.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Bumped up from Triple-A

The Royals recalled Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. The right-hander will provide Kansas City with a fresh arm in the bullpen, but he's unlikely to be entrusted with a high-leverage role. Over his previous stints in the majors this season, Bowlan has made 17 appearances and has delivered a 4.94 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB in 23.2 innings.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Takes loss Saturday

Bowlan (1-2) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over three innings to take the loss versus the Mets on Saturday. Michael Lorenzen (illness) was scratched from Saturday's start, leading to an impromptu bullpen game for the Royals. Bowlan followed opener Angel Zerpa, and it was a Juan Soto two-run home run that did Bowlan in during this low-scoring, 3-1 loss. Bowlan has allowed three runs over four innings during his current stint in the majors. He's at a 3.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 14:8 K:BB over 19 innings across 14 relief appearances this season.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Chased after 2.2 innings

Bowlan (0-1) took the loss Monday against Toronto, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out three. Bowlan was called up to replace Alec Marsh (elbow) in the Royals rotation, making his second career start and first MLB appearance of 2024. The 27-year-old was tagged for three home runs: a two-run homer and a solo homer to Justin Turner and a solo shot to Danny Jansen. Although Marsh will miss at least one more start, it wouldn't be surprising if the Royals look to somebody other than Bowlan to fill the fifth spot in the rotation after his awful showing Monday.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Entering big-league rotation

The Royals are planning to call up Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha on Monday to start the club's series opener in Toronto, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. Bowlan will be entering the big-league rotation as a replacement for Alec Marsh (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. The 27-year-old Bowlan previously made a spot start among his two appearances with Kansas City in 2023, but Monday will mark his 2024 MLB debut. Over 21 innings at Omaha this season, Bowlan has submitted a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Takes loss in debut

Bowlan (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and struck out two without walking a batter over two innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Tigers. Bowlan got the start in his debut and logged a short appearance, but the Royals' offense was shut out in the loss. The right-hander recorded a passable 105:45 K:BB over 102 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season, but it came with a 5.91 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. Bowlan could compete for a rotation spot in 2024, but he likely needs a little more time in the minors.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Debuting Wednesday

Bowlan will serve as the Royals' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Bowlan's start Wednesday will mark the first appearance of his major-league career. The 26-year-old righty was rather unspectacular in the minors this season, recording a 5.91 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 102 innings between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha. Though Rogers' report labels Bowlan as an opener, he should be able to offer more length than what's typically associated with that role, given that his most recent appearance was a six-inning start for Omaha on Sept. 16. He'll have the benefit of facing a Tigers offense that owns MLB's second-lowest team OPS (.679).

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Earns weekly honors

Bowlan was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Bowlan threw five scoreless innings for Double-A Northwest Arkansas versus Springfield on Sunday. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two. Bowlan's made six starts at the Double-A level since returning from Tommy John surgery, though he's struggled to a 6.48 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB over 25 innings. Sunday's outing matched his longest of the season at any level, and it may signal he's feeling more comfortable on the mound after the lengthy rehab process.
