Mariners' Colt Emerson: Will compete for Opening Day spot

The Mariners are expected to give Emerson "runway" to win an Opening Day roster spot, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Most of Emerson's playing time in the minors has come at shortstop, but he's also played some second base and third base. With Eugenio Suarez entering free agency, the hot corner appears the most likely path for Emerson, who is expected to compete with Ben Williamson for the starting job. Emerson is just 20 and has only six games of experience at Triple-A Tacoma, but Jude notes that the Mariners considered putting Emerson on their playoff roster taxi squad. The left-handed hitter slashed .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs and 14 stolen bases over 130 games across three levels in the minors in 2025.

Mariners' Colt Emerson: Set for Triple-A debut

The Mariners promoted Emerson from Double-A Arkansas to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Divish notes that Tacoma needed help in the infield, so Emerson is in line for his first taste of Triple-A. He's been scorching hot for Double-A Arkansas of late, as he was riding a nine-game hitting streak prior to his promotion. Emerson will finish his time at Arkansas with a .282/.360/.430 slash line with three home runs and seven stolen bases in 161 plate appearances.

Emerson will make the leap to Double-A after slashing .281/.388/.453 with 11 home runs and six stolen bases over 90 games with Everett this season. The shortstop is considered to be among Seattle's top prospects.

Emerson is slashing .265/.365/.411 with seven home runs, five steals and a 17.5 percent strikeout rate in 71 games for the AquaSox, but he's been making adjustments at the plate to better incorporate his lower half to get to more power while also introducing a toe-tap. Emerson's 51.4 percent groundball rate on the year is still something to monitor, but his stock is trending back up after a lengthy stretch where he struggled to hit for power.

The 19-year-old Emerson went just 2-for-17 at the plate this spring but hit a home run and stole a couple bases. Arguably the team's top prospect, Emerson finished the 2024 season at High-A Everett and could head back there to start out the 2025 campaign.

Mariners' Colt Emerson: Begins rehab assignment

Emerson (foot) has played two games in his rehab assignment, going 2-for-7 while suiting up for the ACL Mariners and Single-A Modesto on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Emerson was able to play defense in both games, starting at shortstop and logging five innings in each. Given he's been sidelined since mid-May, the promising prospect is projected to likely remain on the rehab assignment for several more games at minimum before being officially activated to Modesto's roster, where he's fashioned a .274 average and .849 OPS across 20 games this minor-league season.
