  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Officially optioned back to minors

The Cardinals optioned Scott to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Scott remains an elite defensive center fielder, but his bat has become untenable, as he's slashing just .194/.276/.258 across 61 games this season. Nathan Church (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to grab Scott's roster spot and is also the favorite to see the bulk of the playing time in center field.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Demotion on tap

The Cardinals are expected to option Scott to Triple-A Memphis prior to their next game Tuesday in New York, Tamar Sher of First Alert 4 St. Louis reports. Scott has served as the Cardinals' primary center fielder throughout the season but has been one of the majors' worst-performing hitters. Even after drawing a pair of walks while collecting his ninth stolen base of the season in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Reds, Scott has turned in a measly .532 OPS, which places him 189th of the 191 hitters who have received at least 180 plate appearances. Scott will now be given a chance to hit the reset button with Memphis, where he'll be able to play on an everyday basis in a lower-pressure environment. Expect St. Louis to announce a corresponding move prior to Tuesday's series opener versus the Mets.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Sitting in second straight game

Scott is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. On the bench against a right-hander (Walker Buehler) for the second day in a row, Scott looks like he could be in danger of fading into a part-time role in the St. Louis outfield. Thomas Saggese will pick up another start in left field while Nathan Church shifts over to center in place of Scott, whose .494 OPS on the season places him 225th among the 230 MLB players who have logged at least 100 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Idle for series finale

Scott is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. The left-handed-hitting Scott has fared far better against lefties (.299 wOBA) than righties (.175 wOBA) this season, but he'll hit the bench for the series finale while the Dodgers send southpaw Justin Wrobleski to the hill. Nathan Church will slide over from his usual spot in left field to cover center field in Scott's absence.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Heading to bench for series opener

Scott is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. After another 0-for-3 performance in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Seattle dropped his season average to .191, Scott will take a seat for the series opener in Pittsburgh. Nathan Church will fill in as the Cardinals' center fielder in place of Scott, who could be at risk of falling into more of a part-time role if he's unable to get going offensively over his next handful of starts.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Absent from St. Louis lineup

Scott is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds. Scott has seen his playing time slip lately, as this is the fourth time he's been absent from the lineup over the Cardinals' last six contests. Nathan Church will patrol center field and bat ninth Tuesday.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Sitting for third time in four games

Scott is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. The left-handed-hitting Scott will hit the bench for the third time in four games, this time sitting against a lefty starter (Jose Quintana) after his previous two absences came versus right-handers. Nathan Church will draw the start in center field Sunday, but the Cardinals could take a committee approach to the position over the final two weeks rather than leaning on a set everyday starter.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Poised for rehab assignment

Scott (ankle) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Scott will go through pregame work with Springfield on Thursday, and as long as he gets through it without any hiccups, he'll start his rehab assignment the next day. The speedy outfielder has been sidelined since mid-August with a sprained left ankle but should be ready to return from the injured list next week if he can avoid a setback during his rehab assignment.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Getting evening off

Scott is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. After starting in each of the last eight games, the left-handed-hitting Scott will head to the bench Sunday while the Cubs send southpaw Matthew Boyd to the hill. Garrett Hampson will get the nod in center field in the series finale.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Homers in win

Scott went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 7-0 win over the Guardians. Scott extended St. Louis' lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning with a 401-foot blast off Hunter Gaddis, his fourth homer of the year. Scott's gone 4-for-8 with a pair of extra-base hits over his last two games after going just 5-for-30 (.167) in his previous 10 contests. Overall, he's slashing .244/.330/.339 with 37 runs scored, 28 RBI and 22 stolen bases across 280 plate appearances this season.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Not starting against lefty Sunday

Scott isn't in the starting lineup for Sunday's tilt against the Dodgers, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Scott will begin on the bench Sunday as veteran southpaw Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for Los Angeles. The speedy outfielder might benefit from a reset, as he's gone 0-for-18 over his past seven games and 1-for-29 across his past 11 contests. Jose Barrero is starting in center field in Scott's stead.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Sitting for first game of day

Scott is out of the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Royals. The Royals are sending a southpaw (Noah Cameron) to the bump for the first game of the twin bill, so the left-handed-hitting Scott will take a seat while Lars Nootbaar slides over to center field. Scott is slashing just .185/.274/.222 in 64 plate appearances versus lefties on the season.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Getting breather Thursday

Scott is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Cincinnati. Scott played both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader and the Reds are sending lefty Andrew Abbott to the bump in Thursday's matinee, so it's a good time for the lefty-hitting Scott to receive some rest. Jose Barrero will start in center field and bat ninth for the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Not starting Sunday

Scott is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup against the Brewers on Sunday. The Brewers are sending southpaw Jose Quintana to the mound, so Scott will begin Sunday's contest in the dugout while the Cardinals start Brendan Donovan, Lars Nootbaar and Jordan Walker in the outfield. Scott has gone 9-for-33 (.273) with two walks, four stolen bases, six runs scored and three RBI over his last 10 games.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Getting day off

Scott is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. Scott will head to the bench for the first time all season after he started each of the first nine games in center field while slashing .281/.368/.406 with a home run and four stolen bases across 38 plate appearances. Mike Siani will get a look in center field Monday, but Scott remains the Cardinals' clear top option at the position.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Swipes two bags in win

Scott went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Twins. The 24-year-old outfielder picked up his first hits and first steals of 2025 after an 0-for-4 showing Thursday. Scott is getting another chance to prove he's the Cardinals' center fielder of the future, so he'll likely have a long leash, but plate discipline remains his biggest obstacle -- he's already struck out three times in eight at-bats to begin the season after posting a 6:42 BB:K in 53 games during his big-league debut last year.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Homers again Friday

Scott socked a solo home run, drew a walk and scored a pair of runs Friday versus the Astros in Grapefruit League play. The home run was Scott's fourth of the spring, which ties him for the team lead. He's also stolen five bases while collecting a 9:8 K:BB. Scott has done all he can to secure the Cardinals' center field job, but it remains possible that he begins the year back at Triple-A Memphis. Michael Siani and Lars Nootbaar are also in the running for reps in center field with St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Close competition with Siani in CF

The Cardinals are "torn" on whether to start Scott or Michael Siani in center field, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Lars Nootbaar appears set to see most of his playing time in left field and will be the backup in center field behind whoever out of Scott and Siani wins that job. Scott has had a nice spring at the plate, going 7-for-22 with one home run and four stolen bases. He's also impressive the team with his "work ethic, confidence and maturity this spring," per Woo. Meanwhile, Siani is only 1-for-25 at the dish during Grapefruit League play but offers the superior glove. The Cardinals are not expected to carry both Scott and Siani on the Opening Day roster, so the loser of this battle appears destined for Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: In center field mix

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol considers the center field job to be an open competition between Scott, Michael Siani and Lars Nootbaar, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Nootbaar is the only one of the three guaranteed a regular role, and with Nolan Arenado still around the chances of those reps coming in center field are higher. However, Scott and Siani are also firmly in the mix, particularly if Marmol leans more toward defense. Scott could be the team's long-term answer at the position, but he struggled mightily in 2024 with just a .502 OPS. The Cardinals will want him playing every day, so if he doesn't win the center field gig he's likely to open the season at Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Rejoins big club

The Cardinals recalled Scott from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. Scott is replacing Luken Baker, who went on paternity leave. It's not clear how much, if any, playing time Scott will receive, and his stay might last only a few days while Baker is away.
