  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Start pushed to Monday

Giants manager Tony Vitello said that Whisenhunt will make his next start Monday versus the Reds in San Francisco, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Whisenhunt was initially slated to face the Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park, but the 25-year-old southpaw will instead receive an extra day of rest in between outings. Through his first seven starts of the season with San Francisco, Whisenhunt owns a 7.03 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 32 innings. He's coming off a rough showing against the Guardians on Tuesday, when he allowed a season-high seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks over four frames.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Tagged for six earned runs in loss

Whisenhunt (3-4) took the loss against the Guardians on Tuesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out one batter across four innings. Whisenhunt put the Giants on the back foot early by yielding a three-run homer to Jo Adell in the first inning. Whisenhunt proceeded to give up two runs in both the second and fourth frames, ending his start with 80 pitches (47 strikes) and only five whiffs. He's allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts, and the six earned runs he gave up Tuesday matched a season high that he set July 31 against the Padres. Things won't get easier for Whisenhunt, as he'll take a 7.03 ERA and 1.84 WHIP over 32 innings into his next start, which lines up for this weekend against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Rebounds for third win

Whisenhunt (3-3) allowed one run on four hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out two over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Astros on Tuesday. Whisenhunt had arguably his best outing of the season so far, though it was mostly because the Astros couldn't capitalize on many of their chances. Still, Whisenhunt had allowed 14 runs over his three previous starts, so this was a step in the right direction. The southpaw has a 6.11 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 22:18 K:BB through 28 innings over six starts this season, and that walk rate is likely to remain a problem. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Cleveland.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Struggles continue Wednesday

Whisenhunt (2-3) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings as the Giants were downed 6-0 by the Rangers. He struck out four. The lefty got no help from his offense, but Whisenhunt created his own problems by allowing three extra-bases hits in the third inning, leading to all four Texas runs against him. Since rejoining the big-league rotation in late July, Whisenhunt has been tagged for 14 runs in just 11.2 innings over three outings while surrendering 17 hits with a 14:9 K:BB. The Giants don't have any healthy alternatives, however, so he likely has more job security than those numbers would suggest. Whisenhunt lines up to make his next trip to the mound at home early next week against the Astros.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Yields six runs in loss

Whisenhunt (2-2) allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings to take the loss versus the Padres on Friday. Whisenhunt has given up 10 runs over 8.1 innings since returning to the Giants' rotation. The southpaw would have had a tough time winning Friday even with a better performance -- the Giants mustered a mere three baserunners in the whole game. Whisenhunt is now at a 6.63 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 16:12 K:BB through 19 innings over four starts in the majors this season. He looks to be in position to gain big-league experience down the stretch -- he's tentatively lined up for a road start versus the Rangers his next time out.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Sticking in rotation

Whisenhunt is slated to start Friday's game against the Padres in San Diego. Whisenhunt will receive a second turn through the rotation after he took the loss last Sunday against the Angels, striking out seven and allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. With Trevor McDonald (elbow) and Hayden Birdsong (elbow) done for the season and Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle both candidates to be dealt ahead of Monday's trade deadline, Whisenhunt should have a fairly clear path to sticking around in the rotation.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Called up in advance of start

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Angels in San Francisco. Whisenhunt will be entering the rotation in place of Trevor McDonald (elbow), who could be facing a long-term absence after he was diagnosed Friday with a UCL sprain. The Giants previously called Whisenhunt up for spot starts June 17 and July 9, but the southpaw has otherwise spent the entire season in the Triple-A rotation. Over 82.1 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Whisenhunt has submitted a 4.15 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 90:38 K:BB across 82.1 innings.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Set to start Sunday

The Giants are expected to recall Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento to start Sunday's home game against the Angels, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. With Trevor McDonald (elbow) recently landing on the injured list, the Giants will turn to Whisenhunt to fill the fifth spot in their rotation. The 25-year-old southpaw has given up four runs in 10.2 innings across his first two MLB starts this season, and he'll draw a favorable matchup on paper Sunday against an Angels lineup that's logged just a .656 OPS since the beginning of July.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Relegated to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. Whisenhunt gave up two runs in 5.2 innings during his spot start against Colorado on Thursday, but he'll now return to the minors in order to make room for Keaton Winn's (elbow) return from the injured list. Whisenhunt now owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.41 WHIP through 10.2 frames in the majors this season, and he could be an option to return to San Francisco later in the year if the big club's rotation depth is tested.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Recalled ahead of Tuesday's start

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Whisenhunt will start Thursday's game at Oracle Park against the Rockies. While the intention seems to be for it to be merely a spot start, Whisenhunt might tempt the Giants to keep him around if he pitches well. The lefty permitted two runs and struck out two over five innings in his lone start for San Francisco earlier this season, and he's collected a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 82:37 K:BB over 77.1 innings in 2026 at Sacramento.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Confirmed to start Thursday

Giants manager Tony Vitello confirmed on KNBR 680 that Whisenhunt will be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to start Thursday's game against the Rockies. The left-hander is making a spot start as the Giants look to get their regular rotation members some extra rest. Whisenhunt allowed two runs and struck out two over five innings in his lone start for San Francisco earlier this season, and he holds a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 82:37 K:BB over 77.1 innings in 2026 at Sacramento.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Could start Thursday

Whisenhunt joined the Giants' taxi squad Wednesday and could be formally recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to start Thursday's game against the Rockies in San Francisco, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Per Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area, manager Tony Vitello wouldn't fully commit to Whisenhunt joining the big-league rotation, but the skipper acknowledged that the southpaw is a candidate to make a start before the All-Star break. The Giants are currently listing Thursday's series opener as "TBA," so Whisenhunt would be a logical choice to slot into that spot while Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle and Trevor McDonald all get pushed back a day in the schedule. Whisenhunt made his lone start of the season with the Giants back on June 17 in Atlanta, striking out two batters while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. The 25-year-old owns a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 82:37 K:BB over 77.1 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Sent down after spot start

The Giants optioned Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Whisenhunt made a spot start Wednesday in Atlanta and picked up the win, allowing two runs over five frames. The left-hander will rejoin the rotation at Sacramento, where he's collected a 3.65 ERA and 77:30 K:BB over 69 innings this season. Whisenhunt could be the first name called when the Giants need another starter again.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: First win of MLB season

Whisenhunt (1-0) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings during a 7-5 win against Atlanta. He struck out two. Whisenhunt was called up for the start after Tuesday's game got suspended and finished earlier Wednesday, with each club netting an extra roster spot. The lefty, who was making his season debut for the Giants, got through five innings without giving up a run but allowed three straight singles in the sixth and was pulled from the game, with two of those runners coming around to score. The 25-year-old had a 3.65 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 13 starts and one relief appearance in Triple-A Sacramento, where he'll likely return following the spot start.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Recalled ahead of Wednesday's start

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Whisenhunt will start Wednesday's game in Atlanta in that will be his first outing with the big club this season. The left-hander holds a 3.65 ERA and 77:30 K:BB over 69 innings covering 13 starts and one relief appearance this season with Sacramento. Whisenhunt is serving as the 27th man, as the two clubs are allowed an extra roster space since Tuesday's suspended game was completed earlier Wednesday. The lefty will likely head back to Sacramento following the spot start.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Bound for Triple-A

The Giants optioned Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Though Whisenhunt had shown improved velocity during spring training, he struggled with his command and control. Over four appearances (two starts) during Cactus League play, Whisenhunt was charged with 10 earned runs on eight hits and eight walks while striking out 14 batters over 9.1 innings. With Whisenhunt sent down and with Hayden Birdsong (forearm) set to begin the season on the injured list, Trevor McDonald and Carson Seymour would appear to be first in line to join the San Francisco rotation if a spot were to open up.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: IL stint expected to be brief

Whisenhunt isn't expected to miss extended time due to the back strain that landed him on the 15-day injured list Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Whisenhunt is eligible for activation Sept. 12, and he could have a good shot at returning on that date or close to it. The rookie left-hander holds a 5.01 ERA and uninspiring 16:12 K:BB over 23.1 frames covering five starts with the Giants this season.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Out with back strain

The Giants placed Whisenhunt on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a back strain, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The left-hander presumably suffered the injury during his start Wednesday against the Cubs, during which he picked up the win after allowing three runs across five innings. Whisenhunt will be eligible to be reinstated in mid-September, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point. Kai-Wei Teng was called up from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move and will take Whisenhunt's place in the rotation Monday at Colorado.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Call-up official

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his start against the Brewers on Friday. Whisenhunt officially joins the 26-man roster, taking the place of Landen Roupp (knee). The 24-year-old Whisenhunt made his MLB debut in late July with three starts for the Giants, posting a 5.02 ERA and a 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings before being sent back down Aug. 12. Whisenhunt's numbers at Sacramento weren't much better, as he tallied a 4.37 ERA and 92:32 K:BB across 103 innings.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Confirmed as Friday starter

The Giants will recall Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento to start Friday's game versus Milwaukee, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Whisenhunt made his MLB debut earlier this season and has started three games for the Giants in 2025, turning in a 1-1 record, 5.02 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings. He's surrendered five home runs across those three outings and will have a tough road matchup versus the Brewers, who rank third in MLB with 653 runs scored.
