  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Moving into reserve role

Gilbert is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. Gilbert is absent from the lineup for the fourth time in five games and appears to have faded into a reserve role after slashing just .107/.107/.214 through his first 28 plate appearances in the majors since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 8. Luis Matos will stick in the starting nine for the fourth consecutive game and appears to have overtaken Gilbert as the Giants' preferred option in right field.

  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Absent from Giants' lineup

Gilbert is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in San Diego. It's righty Dylan Cease on the bump for the Padres, but the left-handed-hitting Gilbert will nevertheless begin the festivities on the bench. He's just 3-for-24 with a 7:0 K:BB to begin his big-league career. Luis Matos will patrol right field for San Francisco.

  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Launches first homer

Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Sunday's 7-1 win against Tampa Bay. The rookie outfielder garnered the start in right field and logged his first long ball with a 384-foot solo shot off Rays reliever Mason Englert in the seventh. Gilbert then returned in the eighth to knock home an additional run on a single. The first 22 plate appearances of the 24-year-old's career have been rough with a .136/.136/.237 slash line and six strikeouts, as he entered Sunday with just one hit. Gilbert is currently stuck in a part-time role, but perhaps this performance can gain him additional playing time.

  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Back in lineup Sunday

Gilbert will start in right field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Rays. The left-handed-hitting Gilbert didn't start against right-handed pitchers in either of the first two contests of the series, but he'll be back in the lineup Sunday as the Rays send righty Logan Webb to the bump. Since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 8, Gilbert has gone 1-for-18 with a stolen base and a 0:5 BB:K.

  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Contract selected

The Giants selected Gilbert's contract from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. Since coming over to the Giants organization as part of the trade that sent Tyler Rogers to the Mets, Gilbert has gone a cool 7-for-14 with two RBI, three runs scored and two steals over five games at Sacramento. With Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) headed to the injured list, the 24-year-old Gilbert will now receive his first opportunity to prove himself in the majors while starting in right field against the Nationals on Friday. Daniel Johnson was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

  • Giants' Drew Gilbert: Lands with Giants

The Giants acquired Gilbert, Jose Butto and Blade Tidwell from the Mets on Wednesday in exchange for Tyler Rogers, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Gilbert has slashed a pedestrian .246/.349/.435 with 12 homers in 81 games this season with Triple-A Syracuse, though he has been swinging the bat better in July (.316/.388/.645). The 24-year-old's star has faded since he was considered a top-100 prospect, but he's still young enough to rediscover some mojo.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Back in action with Syracuse

Gilbert (hamstring) went 1-for-4 with a run scored for Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. After spending six games with Single-A St. Lucie on a rehab assignment, Gilbert rejoined the Syracuse lineup Thursday, batting second and playing center field. The 24-year-old is looking to rebound from a rough 2024 campaign that saw him slash .215/.313/.393 over 56 Triple-A contests, but Gilbert's first priority is proving he can stay healthy.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Could miss all of Grapefruit League

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Gilbert (hamstring) may not appear in any Grapefruit League games, but the outfielder is expected to be ready to play when Triple-A Syracuse opens its season March 28, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Gilbert was limited to just 56 games at the Triple-A level in 2024, with a hamstring issue costing him nearly three months of action. Though Gilbert was active to finish the season, he acknowledged prior to the start of spring training that he hadn't yet made a full recovery from the hamstring injury, prompting the Mets to take a cautious approach with his usage during camp. Gilbert hasn't suffered any reported setbacks since reporting to spring training, so as long as he's able to get some at-bats in on the back fields of camp in the weeks to come, he should be ready to handle an everyday role in the Syracuse outfield once the season gets underway.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Managing hamstring strain

Gilbert was placed on the 7-day injured list with Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday due to a mild right hamstring strain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old suffered the injury while running the bases Saturday and will be sidelined for at least the next week, though it's possible he faces a lengthier absence. Gilbert is one of the Mets' top prospects and could make his MLB debut at some point this season with a strong showing at Syracuse.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Will attend big-league camp

Gilbert received an invite to big-league spring training from the Mets, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Picked up from the Astros in last year's Justin Verlander deal, Gilbert is the top outfield prospect in the Mets' organization and slashed .325/.423/.561 in 149 plate appearances for Double-A Binghamton following the trade. The 23-year-old could open the season at Triple-A and make his major-league debut later in 2024, but he's a long shot to break camp with the big-league club after the Mets added Harrison Bader last month.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Shipped to Mets in Verlander deal

Gilbert was traded from the Astros to the Mets on Tuesday along with at least one other prospect in exchange for Justin Verlander, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Netting Gilbert in return for Verlander is a nice piece of business for the Mets, as the 22-year-old center fielder is the Astros' best prospect. He dominated at High-A earlier this season (192 wRC+), in part because he was old for the level and playing half his games in the hitter-friendly park in Asheville. Gilbert has been less prolific at Double-A Corpus Christi, slashing .241/.342/.371 with six home runs and six steals, although he has heated up of late, batting .293 with five home runs and a 17.1 percent strikeout rate over his last 99 at-bats. Down the road, Gilbert has a chance to be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter who contributes in all five standard rotisserie categories. He could reach the majors sometime next season.

  • Astros' Drew Gilbert: Heating up at Double-A

Gilbert is slashing .282/.364/.513 with two home runs, two steals and a 6:5 K:BB in his last 10 games for Double-A Corpus Christi. Gilbert got off to a rough statistical start at Double-A, but he was still displaying good strike-zone awareness. This recent uptick in power is good to see, as he only homered once in his first 36 games for the Hooks.

  • Astros' Drew Gilbert: Promoted to Double-A

The Astros promoted Gilbert from High-A Asheville to Double-A Corpus Christi on Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Gilbert has been red hot with Asheville this season, batting .360 with 15 extra-base hits, 18 RBI, 21 runs scored and four stolen bases over 86 at-bats in 21 games. The strong performance at the plate has earned him the opportunity to move up one step closer to the big leagues as Gilbert operates as one of the organization's top prospects.

  • Astros' Drew Gilbert: Expected to be ready for season

Houston director of player development Sara Goodrum told reporters Tuesday that Gilbert (elbow) is expected to be ready for the start of the 2023 season, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Gilbert was only able to play 10 games in 2022 after he crashed into the wall in center and dislocated his right elbow. The 26th pick of last year's draft out of Tennessee is considered one of the more advanced players from the 2022 class. He is a prospect that could offer significant fantasy appeal in the coming seasons.

  • Astros' Drew Gilbert: Done for season

Gilbert will miss the remainder of the minor-league season due to a dislocated right elbow, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. He was initially diagnosed with a forearm injury when he crashed into an outfield wall last weekend. During further examination of Gilbert's forearm, doctors discovered the dislocated right elbow, which spontaneously went back into place before he was examined. It's unclear if Gilbert will require surgery, but the Astros' 2022 first-round pick will be shut down after slashing .300/.382/.433 with one home run and six steals in his first nine professional games.

  • Astros' Drew Gilbert: Carted off field

Gilbert was carted off the field after crashing into the outfield wall while playing for Single-A Fayetteville on Saturday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. The nature of Gilbert's injury is not yet clear, though he was seen wearing a cast on his arm while exiting the field. Given the mode of his exit, it seems as though the injury may be a fairly severe one, but the Astros have yet to specify when he's expected to return.
