  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Covers hot corner

Fernandez started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Saturday's 5-1 loss to Seattle. Fernandez was a late addition to the starting lineup after Nolan Arenado (undisclosed) was scratched. Arenado has been battling a groin injury since Tuesday but made an appearance as a pinch hitter and DH on Friday, only to foul a ball off his leg and get hit by a pitch on the arm in his two plate appearances. Fernandez has gone 3-for-12 with two doubles and an RBI this week as a fill-in at third base.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Logs two doubles

Fernandez went 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI in Friday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Mariners. Fernandez entered Friday just 1-for-17 over his last six games. The infielder was able to break out with a big game, and after Nolan Arenado (arm/groin) was plunked in the ninth inning, there's the possibility Fernandez will be needed to fill in at third base for a while longer. Fernandez is hitting .268 with a .677 OPS, three home runs, 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and six stolen bases across 49 contests this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Fills in at third base

Fernandez entered Tuesday's game in the seventh inning after Nolan Arenado was removed due to a groin injury. Fernandez was hitless in his lone at-bat in a 7-5 win over the Giants. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo downplayed Arenado's injury to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports following the game and indicated there were no plans to have Arenado undergo imaging. Arenado is considered day-to-day, and Fernandez is likely to fill in at third base if needed.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Snags fifth steal

Fernandez went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Rockies. Fernandez started all three games of this weekend series against the Rockies, going 4-for-12 with two RBI and two steals. Two of those starts came against right-handed pitchers, though Ketel Marte serving as designated hitter Saturday before resting Sunday likely factored into Fernandez's usage in the field. Through 127 plate appearances this year, Fernandez is hitting .275 with a .693 OPS, three home runs, five steals, 14 RBI and 20 runs scored. He'll play regularly against left-handed pitchers, but it doesn't look like he'll be strictly platooned when his hitting is good.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Losing starts to Del Castillo

Fernandez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Fernandez will be on the bench for the second day in a row, with both of his absences coming against right-handed pitchers. Though Fernandez maintains a .775 OPS on the season compared to Adrian Del Castillo's .657 mark, the latter's standing as a left-handed batter could afford him most of the playing time at designated hitter. Arizona previously had regular at-bats against right-handed pitching available for both players between DH and catcher, but Gabriel Moreno's recent return from the injured list will limit Del Castillo's opportunities to pick up starts behind the dish moving forward.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Taking seat Tuesday

Fernandez isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Pirates, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Fernandez will get a breather after going 1-for-9 with a walk and a run scored during Arizona's latest series against the Cubs. His absence will allow Adrian Del Castillo to work as the designated hitter while batting fourth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Fernandez is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets. Fernandez has now started four of eight contests since being promoted, but only one of the last four tilts versus right-handed pitching. The 22-year-old homered twice in his major-league debut but is 1-for-12 with a 0:3 BB:K since then. Ildemaro Vargas will handle first base and Adrian Del Castillo will be the designated hitter Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Homers twice in MLB debut

Fernandez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and a strikeout in Tuesday's 7-5 win against the Tigers. Starting at third base in his major-league debut, the 22-year-old put the Diamondbacks on the board during the fourth inning with a solo shot and followed up with a three-run blast in the eighth to erase a 5-4 deficit. Fernandez was expected to primarily serve as a reserve infielder for Arizona after getting promoted Monday, but the impactful debut could net him more opportunities in the short term with Pavin Smith (elbow) on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Promoted to big leagues

The Diamondbacks recalled Fernandez from Triple-A Reno on Monday. Fernandez was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason and this will be his first promotion to the big leagues. The 22-year-old slashed .272/.321/.454 with 17 home runs and 12 steals in 2025 at Double-A Amarillo. Fernandez could see some playing time while Pavin Smith (elbow) is out but is likely to operate more as a reserve infielder.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Headed out to Reno

The Diamondbacks optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. After being added to the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster over the winter, Fernandez will make the jump to Triple-A this season after spending the entire 2025 campaign at Double-A Amarillo, with whom he slashed .272/.321/.454 with 17 home runs and 12 steals in 510 plate appearances. The 22-year-old from Venezuela is regarded as only an average defender at shortstop, so a move to third base could be in the cards at some point down the road.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Hot spring continues

Fernandez went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Saturday's spring game against San Francisco. Fernandez has been one of the hottest hitters on the Diamondbacks this spring. The shortstop is 7-for-25 with all seven hits going for extra bases, and 13 of his 18 balls in play this spring have left his bat at over 100 mph. There's been a lot of swing and miss as well, which is to be expected for a 22-year-old that has yet to compete above Double-A, but a good showing at Triple-A Reno could put him in line for a big-league debut in 2026.
