Matt Koperniak: Released by St. Louis
The Cardinals released Koperniak on Wednesday.
Koperniak was added to St. Louis' 40-man roster after the 2024 season, but he had a sub-.700 OPS each of the last two seasons at Triple-A Memphis and is now out of the organization. The 28-year-old will now be on the lookout for a new minor-league deal elsewhere.

While no longer on the 40-man roster, Koperniak will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 27-year-old outfielder is coming off a poor 2025 season at Memphis, slashing .249/.322/.387 across 537 plate appearances.

Cardinals' Matt Koperniak: Booted from 40-man
The Cardinals designated Koperniak for assignment Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Koperniak will lose his 40-man roster spot in order to make room for Dustin May, who officially signed with St. Louis on Wednesday. Koperniak, 27, spent all of 2025 at Triple-A Memphis and endured his worst minor-league season yet, slashing .249/.322/.387 across 537 plate appearances.

The Cardinals optioned Koperniak to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Koperniak turned in a strong spring training .355/.394/.645 with two home runs across 33 plate appearances in the Grapefruit League, but he faced an uphill battle to win a spot on the Opening Day roster. He'll head back to Memphis, where he turned in an .882 OPS over 513 plate appearances in 2024.

Cardinals' Matt Koperniak: Continues impressive spring
Koperniak went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
Koperniak is having a nice spring thus far after being added to the 40-man roster this offseason, going 5-for-16 with one homer, one stolen base and a couple walks. The 27-year-old slashed .309/.370/.512 with 20 home runs in 2024 at Triple-A Memphis and is likely headed back there to start this season, although it's possible he could push for a reserve spot if Jordan Walker's knee injury forces him to miss time.
