  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Sent back to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Tarnok to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday. Tarnok was with the big club over the weekend while Luke Bachar was on paternity leave, but Bachar has now returned to the Marlins to reclaim his spot in the bullpen. The right-handed Tarnok didn't make an appearance during his brief stint in the majors.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Brought up to bigs

The Marlins recalled Tarnok from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday. Tarnok will join the 26-man roster in place of Lake Bachar, who's been put on the paternity list. Tarnok has pitched two scoreless innings with the Marlins this season and owns a 3.90 ERA in 55.1 innings at Triple-A.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Sent back to minors

The Marlins optioned Tarnok to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. Tarnok made a nice impression during his brief time in the majors, picking up a save in his first appearance and a win in his other outing and not allowing a baserunner in either outing. He should receive another opportunity with the Marlins eventually, but for now he's clearing out to make room on the roster for Wednesday's starting pitcher, Adam Mazur, who was recalled from Triple-A. Tarnok could settle back into a starting role as he returns to Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Receives call-up

The Marlins selected Tarnok's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday. Tarnok had been working primarily in the rotation at Jacksonville while posting a 4.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 44:18 K:BB in 41.1 innings over 12 appearances (10 starts). The Marlins are expected to deploy the right-hander out of the bullpen initially, but if he isn't needed over the next few days, he could be a candidate to make a spot start later next week.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Healthy for start of Triple-A season

Tarnok (ankle) struck out two batters and gave up one unearned run on one hit and no walks over three innings Sunday for Triple-A Jacksonville in its 2-1 extra-inning win over Nashville. Tarnok attended big-league camp with the Marlins as a non-roster invitee, but he saw his longshot bid for the Opening Day roster come to an end after spraining his left ankle early in camp. The right-hander had sufficient time to heal up from the injury and kept ramped up ahead of the minor-league season, allowing him to claim a spot in the Jacksonville rotation.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Out two weeks with ankle injury

Tarnok will be held out of game action for two weeks after rolling his left ankle, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Tarnok is in Marlins camp as a non-roster invitee. He probably wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster regardless, but this injury should seal his fate in that regard.

  • Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Signs deal with Marlins

Tarnok signed a contract with the Marlins on Sunday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports. Tarnok appeared in 21 games between Triple-A Las Vegas and Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2024, producing an 8.16 ERA with 34 strikeouts over 28.2 innings. He'll now get a shot at proving himself with Miami in the spring. Tarnok will be looking to make his first appearance in the majors since the 2023 campaign with Oakland.

  • Phillies' Freddy Tarnok: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Phillies outrighted Tarnok to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Tarnok has been removed from the 40-man roster but will stick around in the organization for now. The righty was a waiver claim of the Phillies back in July.

  • Phillies' Freddy Tarnok: Shut down with lat strain

Triple-A Lehigh Valley placed Tarnok on its 7-day injured list July 9 with a right lat strain, Tom Housenick of The Allentown Morning Call reports. After claiming Tarnok off waivers from Oakland on June 1, Philadelphia optioned him to Lehigh Valley. Tarnok accrued a 4.82 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB in 9.1 innings over five outings (four starts) with Lehigh Valley before being shut down with the injury, which will likely keep him out indefinitely.

  • Phillies' Freddy Tarnok: Claimed by Phillies

The Phillies claimed Tarnok (hip) off waivers from Oakland on Saturday. The Phillies reinstated him from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Tarnok has been on the injured list all season while recovering from a hip procedure he underwent in August. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on May 8 and allowed 11 earned runs in just 7.1 innings before Oakland removed him from its 40-man roster. He'll remain in Triple-A upon making a full recovery and shifting to a new organization, though a drastic turnaround in performance would likely be necessary before Tarnok spends any time in Philadelphia. Dylan Covey (shoulder) was transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Tarnok.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Uneven rehab assignment

Tarnok (hip) has allowed multiple earned runs in two of his four rehab appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas, pitching to a 10.38 ERA and 1.62 WHIP with a 4:1 K:BB across 4.1 innings. Tarnok's first and most recent rehab appearances went well, with the right-hander blanking Round Rock over one frame in his minor-league debut May 8 and then bouncing back last Sunday with a pair of perfect innings against El Paso after consecutive rough outings. Tarnok has yet to pitch at the major-league level this season as he completes his recovery from August 2023 hip surgery. He may end up needing his full rehab window with the Aviators, but there could be room for him in the rotation upon activation, considering there are three Athletics starters on the injured list and veteran right-hander Ross Stripling is now sitting on a 1-9 record and a 5.82 ERA across his first 11 starts.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Set for bullpen session

Tarnok (hip) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session and live BP later in the week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok received a cortisone injection earlier in the month after experiencing inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, and he's now on track to return to mound work this week. The club figures to take its time easing him back into action considering the right-hander has already had a setback following surgery.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Gets cortisone shot

Tarnok (hip) recently received a cortisone injection and could progress to pitching off a mound next week, the Associated Press reports. Tarnok recently received an MRI, and the cortisone shot may have been the prescribed method of treatment that emerged from that evaluation. The fact the right-hander appears to be trending towards starting a throwing program is encouraging, but Tarnok still needs some time before getting into any action with Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: MRI on tap

Tarnok is slated for an MRI on his hip after feeling discomfort during a recent bullpen session, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok is already on the injured list and slated to start his 2024 season at Triple-A Las Vegas whenever he's ready for game action. However, that benchmark now appears to be even further away, given this latest development. The results of Tarnok's MRI should be available in the coming days, potentially offering further insight into a recovery timetable.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Officially hits injured list

The Athletics placed Tarnok (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Tarnok's placement on the IL was expected after he was shut down from throwing in early March due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip. Manager Mark Kotsay has already confirmed Tarnok will begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas when he's healthy. The right-hander logged 14.2 innings across five appearances (one start) with the Athletics last season and is expected to see time in the majors during the 2024 campaign.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Will begin season at Triple-A

Tarnok (hip), who threw a 20-pitch, all-fastballs bullpen session Tuesday, is set to begin the season with Triple-A Las Vegas, MLB.com reports. Manager Mark Kotsay confirmed Wednesday that Tarnok will open the season with the Aviators, although the move has yet to be made official. Tarnok's next bullpen session will therefore come in minor-league camp, and if he continues without setbacks, he could be ready to join the major-league club before the end of April.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Shut down after setback

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Wednesday that Tarnok is currently shut down after having a setback with his surgically repaired right hip, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok had surgery last August and entered camp behind schedule. He has yet to appear in a Cactus League game, and now that he's experienced a setback, Tarnok looks like a virtual lock to begin the season on the injured list. Once healthy, Tarnok could be a candidate to join the Oakland rotation.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Sent to 60-day IL

The Athletics transferred Tarnok (hip) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Tarnok underwent surgery on his right hip in late August, effectively ending his season. As such, the move to the 60-day injured list doesn't affect Tarnok's timeline for a return, though it creates an open spot on the 28-man active roster for Joe Boyle, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Padres.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Diagnosed with calf strain

Tarnok is dealing with a Grade 2 right calf strain, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Tuesday, and the reason for his deactivation is now known. Manager Mark Kotsay said Tarnok will be shut down in the interim, so the rookie looks set to miss more time than the minimum 15 days.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Working in bulk role Wednesday

Tarnok will serve as the primary pitcher for the Athletics on Wednesday against the Rangers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The Athletics will likely deploy an opener in front of him, but Tarnok is slated to work multiple innings Wednesday and profiles as the Oakland pitcher most likely to factor into any decision. The 24-year-old right-hander has posted a 6.75 ERA and 10:9 K:BB through 10.2 major-league frames this season. He looks like he could get a spin in the No. 5 spot in the rotation after Oakland recently demoted Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas.
