  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Latching on with Detroit

Sammons is signing a minor-league contract with the Tigers that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Sammons will return to Detroit after spending a season overseas pitching for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan. His last big-league appearance took place in 2024 with the Tigers when he posted a 3.62 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with 18 strikeouts across 27.1 innings. Sammons will now have a chance to win a major-league roster spot, presumably as a reliever.

  • Bryan Sammons: Signs with Japanese team

The Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball signed Sammons to a one-year contract Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Sammons will have the ability to earn more than $1 million if he hits all of his incentives. The left-hander posted a 3.62 ERA and 18:9 K:BB over 27.1 frames with the Tigers in 2024 before being removed from their 40-man roster last month.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Solid in relief

Sammons did not factor into the decision in Thursday's loss to the Mariners, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over 4.1 relief innings while striking out four. The lefty took over for opener Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the third inning and retired the side in order before going on to hurl another two scoreless innings. Sammons would eventually cough up a solo homer to Luke Raley in the sixth, but still pitched into the seventh before being replaced by Tyler Holton. It was only the third appearance of the season for Sammons, though he's pitched at least four innings in two of them while posting a 9:2 K:BB.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Makes brief relief appearance

Sammons retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Royals in 11 innings. After tossing 7.1 innings in bulk relief in his MLB debut July 29 versus the Guardians, Sammons seemed poised to fill one of the three open spots in the Detroit rotation this week. The Tigers instead chose to deploy him in a more traditional relief role in his next appearance, as Sammons entered Saturday's contest in the top of the eighth with two outs and runners on first and second. Sammons induced a flyout to get out of the jam, then tossed a clean ninth inning to help send the game to extras.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Added to roster

The Tigers selected Sammons' contract from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Sammons has put up a 4.18 ERA and 78:34 K:BB over 84 innings covering 17 starts with Toledo this season. The left-hander is expected to be used in bulk relief Monday against the Guardians behind starter Beau Brieske, who is unlikely to work more than an inning or two before exiting the contest.
