  • Red Sox's Jason Delay: Signs minor-league deal with Boston

Delay and the Red Sox agreed on a minor-league contract Sunday, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports. Delay with join the Red Sox organization after spending the majority of the 2025 season with Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .219 with eight doubles, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored over 192 at-bats in 59 games. The catcher last appeared in the big leagues in 2024 while with the Pirates, and he'll look to impress with Boston in an attempt to get another crack at the major-league level in 2026.

  • Braves' Jason Delay: Outrighted to Gwinnett

Atlanta sent Delay outright to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. The 30-year-old backstop has been in Triple-A all season, slashing .230/.288/.267 through 146 plate appearances. He'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster but stick in the organization as additional catcher depth for the Stripers.

  • Braves' Jason Delay: Shipped to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Delay from the Pirates on Thursday in exchange for cash and optioned him to Double-A Columbus. Delay was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday, but a move to Atlanta will allow him to reclaim a spot on a 40-man roster. However, he'll be demoted to Double-A upon joining his new organization and doesn't figure to serve as anything more than minor-league depth for the duration of the season. Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Designated for assignment

The Pirates designated Delay for assignment Tuesday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Thomas Harrington, who is up to start Tuesday's game against the Rays. Delay is just a career .231/.295/.315 hitter over parts of three big-league seasons but could draw interest via waivers from a club in need of catching depth.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Sent to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Delay to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Delay was unable to win a place on the Opening Day roster after going 2-for-17 with eight strikeouts in 12 spring games. • Pirates' Jason Delay: Heading back to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Delay to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. Delay will head back to the minors as the Pirates clear room on the 26-man active roster for fellow catcher Joey Bart (thumb), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. During his two-week stay with the Pirates, Delay went 3-for-12 with three doubles, two walks, five RBI and one run.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Call-up official

The Pirates recalled Delay from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. Delay joined the Pirates in Colorado ahead of Saturday's game and should split catching duties with Yasmani Grandal while Henry Davis (concussion) is sidelined. Delay has posted a .523 OPS over 34 plate appearances at Triple-A this season.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Pirates activated Delay (knee) from the 60-day injured list Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. • Pirates' Jason Delay: Starts rehab assignment

Delay (knee) began a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton on Saturday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Delay is recovering from knee surgery that occurred in mid-April and started behind the dish in his first game appearance Saturday. His rehab assignment is expected to be transferred to Triple-A Indianapolis shortly. Delay is eligible to return from the injured list in early June, though he'll likely require a lengthier ramp-up period.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Moves to 60-day IL

The Pirates transferred Delay (knee) to the 60-day injured list Friday. Delay will give up his spot on the 40-man roster in order to make room for Daulton Jefferies, who was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Friday. Delay was already expected to be out until July after undergoing knee surgery in April, so his move to the 60-day IL has virtually no impact on his return timeline. He has resumed catching during bullpen sessions, but he still has a long way to go before returning to the Pirates' lineup.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Catches bullpen session

Delay (knee) caught a bullpen session Wednesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It would appear to be the first time he's done so since undergoing surgery in mid-April to repair the meniscus in his right knee. Delay is expected to miss most, if not all, of the rest of the first half as he recovers.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Undergoes knee surgery

Delay recently underwent surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Delay is expected to be ready to resume baseball activities in six weeks and it figures to be several weeks after that before he might be ready to return to the Pirates. Pittsburgh is currently using Henry Davis and Joey Bart as its catching duo, but Yasmani Grandal (foot) recently began a rehab assignment.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Shut down from all activities

Delay (knee) remains shut down from all baseball activities, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Delay has been out for the last week with right knee inflammation and appears to have made little-to-no progress. He's eligible for activation in mid-April, but clearly the catcher will not be ready at that time.

  • Pirates' Jason Delay: Hits IL with inflamed knee

The Pirates placed Delay on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right knee inflammation, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Delay's placement on the IL is retroactive to Monday, so he'll be eligible for activation as soon as April 11. However, because he still has three minor-league options remaining, Delay seems more likely to be headed for Triple-A Indianapolis once activated after the Pirates acquired fellow catcher Joey Bart from the Giants on Tuesday. Bart was added to the 26-man roster Wednesday in a corresponding move, and since he's a former top prospect with no options remaining, he'll likely move ahead of Delay on the organizational catching depth chart. In addition to Bart, the Pirates have 2021 No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis and veteran Yasmani Grandal (foot) -- who is on the IL while he recovers from plantar fasciitis -- ahead of Delay in the pecking order behind the dish.

It's unclear what injury Delay might be dealing with, but more clarification will come once the Pirates make the move official. Delay is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. Delay will be getting a breather after going 0-for-2 with a walk while catching all nine innings of Tuesday's 7-4 win. Tyler Heineman replaces Delay behind the dish for the series finale.

Delay went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the White Sox. Delay drew his third start of the season and hit ninth, though that didn't stop him from having a productive performance. He tallied his first multi-hit effort of the campaign, which was highlighted by an RBI knock in the fifth frame. So long as Austin Hedges (concussion) is sidelined, Delay figures to split time behind the dish with Tyler Heineman. Delay slashed just .213/.265/.271 over his first 57 major-league games last season in Pittsburgh, and his minor-league stats aren't much better.
