    The Tigers optioned Cruz to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. Cruz was called up by Detroit on Friday and will return to the minors after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in his first two MLB games. Ben Malgeri was promoted Tuesday to round out the Tigers' bench.

  • Tigers' Trei Cruz: Added to MLB roster

    The Tigers called up Cruz from Triple-A Toledo, and he is starting in right field and batting ninth Friday against the White Sox, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. It will be the MLB debut for the 27-year-old Cruz, who is replacing Wenceel Perez (face) on the active roster. Cruz has a .228/.326/.333 slash line with two homers in 33 games at Toledo this year and is likely to operate primarily as a reserve outfielder while up in the majors.

The 27-year-old has yet to see any action at the major-league level but is a good bet to debut at some point for the Tigers this season.

    The Tigers selected Cruz's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. After beginning the year with an .856 OPS at Double-A Erie, Cruz reached Triple-A for the first time in early July, slashing .286/.428/.458 across 243 plate appearances. The 27-year-old will now receive a spot on the 40-man roster following his breakout campaign and will thereby be protected from the Rule 5 Draft.

Cruz will move up to Triple-A after slashing .275/.402/.454 with seven home runs and nine stolen bases in 323 plate appearances with Erie. The 27-year-old logged starts at shortstop, third base and center field during his time at the Double-A level.
