  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Officially placed on IL

The Astros placed Diaz (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. A left oblique strain caused Diaz to be scratched from the lineup ahead of Monday's contest and will now also prevent him from playing for another 10 days. Christian Vazquez will presumably take over as the Astros' primary catcher while Diaz is on the shelf, and Nick Allen (back) will come off the injured list to claim the open roster spot.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Will require IL stint

Diaz is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a left oblique injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Diaz was scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Monday's 8-3 loss to the Dodgers due to what had been referred to as a left abdominal injury, but Astros manager Joe Espada clarified after the game that the backstop will miss some time due to an oblique issue. Christian Vazquez can be expected to serve as the primary catcher while Diaz recovers.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Late scratch Monday

Diaz (abdomen) has been scratched from Monday's lineup against the Dodgers due to a left abdominal injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Diaz was initially slated to bat ninth in Monday's series opener, but an abdominal injury will keep him from taking the field. He can be considered day-to-day until the team has more information to share on the severity of his injury.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Resting Wednesday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Return confirmed

Diaz (foot) will be the designated hitter Wednesday and will start at catcher in Friday's Grapefruit League game, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Diaz was delayed due to a foot sprain suffered in the Dominican Winter League, but he isn't too far behind, as he's scheduled to catch in a game before the end of February. Cesar Salazar is Diaz's only backup, so there should be ample playing time available for the latter once he puts the foot sprain behind him.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Coming back from foot sprain

Diaz is behind schedule with his running program after suffering a left foot sprain during the Dominican Winter League, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Diaz is participating in other baseball activities and will catch Tatsuya Imai's bullpen session Wednesday, but he's a tad behind with his running. It does not sound like an injury that will sideline Diaz long, but the Astros could hold him out of the first handful of Grapefruit League games just to be safe.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Wins arbitration case

Diaz will make $4.5 million in 2026 after winning his arbitration hearing with the Astros on Tuesday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Diaz slashed .256/.284/.417 in 2025 while tallying 20 homers, 70 RBI and 56 runs scored across 567 plate appearances. His success ultimately led to the arbitration panel choosing his $4.5 million figure over the $3 million that the Astros submitted. The 27-year-old backstop is expected to continue playing nearly every day in 2026 and has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining.

With the Astros eliminated from playoff contention, Diaz will end the year with a .256/.284/.417 slash line with one steal, 56 runs, 25 doubles and 70 RBI over 567 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Battling hand issue

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies due to a hand injury, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Getting rare rest Saturday

Diaz is not part of the starting lineup Saturday versus the Orioles. This will be Diaz's first day off since Aug. 10, as he's been working as Houston's DH on days when he doesn't start behind the plate. He's done fine with a .279 batting average, two homers and five RBI in the 11 games since his last day out of the lineup, so his absence Saturday seems to be simply a rest day. Victor Caratini is behind the plate for the Astros on Saturday, while Jose Altuve is getting a turn at DH.
