Short was selected to the active roster Friday to provide some extra infield depth during the final weekend before the All-Star break, but he'll now lose his spot to make room for Marcus Semien's (hip) return from the IL. Short went 0-for-6 with a walk during his three-game stint with the Mets and is likely to spend most of the second half working as organizational depth in the minor leagues.

Short has now been pushed off a 40-man roster for the second time in less than two weeks after Detroit previously designated him for assignment June 12. The 31-year-old appeared in just three games for the Mets after being claimed off waivers. He'll give up his roster spot to shortstop Francisco Lindor (calf), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list prior to the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cubs.

That Short managed to score and drive in a run without recording a hit is fairly impressive, though his .125 batting average would have benefitted from a few base knocks. Short elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A on Thursday, but he'll now return to the Tigers and reclaim a spot on the active roster. The 30-year-old has gone 0-for-3 with a strikeout while appearing in just two games with Detroit this season, and he'll presumably continue to serve as bench depth while in the majors. Jace Jung was optioned to Toledo in a corresponding move.

Short was pushed off the 40-man roster Tuesday once Zach McKinstry came off the injured list. Now that he's cleared waivers, Short will have the option to decline his outright assignment and elect free agency, and it remains unknown what he will do. The 30-year-old infielder has had minimal success at the big-league level during his career, slashing just .171/.269/.295 through 597 plate appearances since debuting in 2021.

Short went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 15-3 loss to the Athletics.
Short kept the Astros from getting shut out when he went deep off Jeffrey Springs in the fifth inning. Since the All-Star break, Short is batting .188 (3-for-16) over seven games. The infielder is up to a .243/.300/.459 slash line with two homers, seven RBI, seven runs scored, no stolen bases and two doubles over 40 plate appearances this season. He is seeing a little more than a short-side platoon role at shortstop to help cover the absence of Jeremy Pena (ribs), who began facing live pitching earlier this week and should be close to a return. Once Pena is healthy, Short could be an option to fill in at third base while Isaac Paredes (hamstring) is on the mend.
