  • Cubs' Gavin Hollowell: Out with shoulder inflammation

The Cubs placed Hollowell on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Hollowell tossed a scoreless frame in Thursday's win over the Cardinals, but he evidently didn't bounce back well from the outing. Antoine Kelly will grab Hollowell's spot on the roster and in the bullpen.

  • Cubs' Gavin Hollowell: Picks up first save of season

Hollowell was charged with an unearned run in the 10th inning Friday without allowing a hit or a walk, recording his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Pirates. He didn't strike out a batter. The right-hander entered the game after the Cubs took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th, and while Hollowell couldn't stop the phantom runner from coming around to score, the Bucs didn't get anyone else on base. Jacob Webb had worked the eighth inning and Caleb Thielbar the ninth, but Hollowell could be positioning himself for more high-leverage work. Since rejoining the big-league roster in late June, he's delivered a 0.00 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through 8.2 innings.

Triple-A Iowa placed Hollowell on its 7-day injured list April 12 due to an unspecified injury. Hollowell allowed four runs on three hits and four walks across two innings of relief in a 7-0 loss to the Brewers in the first game of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out two. Hollowell simply couldn't find the strike zone consistently, as he threw just 21 of his 45 pitches for strikes. The righty also uncorked a wild pitch in the rough outing as the Cubs let him take one on the chin to save bullpen arms for the second game Monday. Hollowell was called up to the majors earlier in the day to serve as the team's 27th man, and after the poor performance, he'll likely return to Triple-A Iowa in the near future.
