  • Red Sox's Kyle Harrison: Candidate to start Monday

Harrison is being considered to start Monday's series opener against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. After the Red Sox shuttled Walker Buehler to the bullpen Friday, the club needs a starter for Monday. Harrison, who is currently at Triple-A Worcester, is one of the candidates being considered. Richard Fitts, who is on Boston's roster and was available to pitch out of the bullpen Saturday, is the other. If Harrison is tabbed to start, it would be his debut in a Boston uniform more than two months after he was the key acquisition from San Francisco in the Rafael Devers trade. He's pitched to a 3.69 ERA and 1.61 WHIP while striking out 46 and walking 25 over 46.1 innings for the WooSox. Since Fitts was not needed out of the bullpen Saturday, he may have the inside track to start Monday.

  • Red Sox's Kyle Harrison: Revamping repertoire in minors

Harrison is working on revamping his repertoire at Triple-A Worcester before joining their rotation, Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports. Acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade, Harrison worked on some new pitches -- including a cutter and sinker -- during a live batting practice session this week. The lefty threw a four-seamer, slurve and changeup during his time in San Francisco, with Red Sox director of pitching Justin Williard calling the four-seamer a "unique fastball that's going to be his bread and butter." The Red Sox want Harrison to find some consistent secondary offerings to pair with the four-seamer, and senior director of player development Brian Abraham said "the returns have been really good so far" with the southpaw. Harrison figures to make at least a couple starts with Worcester as he works on his new offerings, but the plan seems to be to have him as part of Boston's rotation sooner rather than later.

  • Red Sox's Kyle Harrison: Opening at Triple-A after trade

The Red Sox optioned Harrison to Triple-A Worcester after acquiring him from the Giants on Sunday. Along with Harrison, the Red Sox brought in right-handers Jordan Hicks (toe) and Jose Bello and outfielder James Tibbs in a deal that sent designated hitter Rafael Devers to San Francisco. Though Harrison will likely be an option to make starts for the Red Sox later this season, the big club didn't have a spot available for him in the rotation, so he'll begin his tenure in the organization at Triple-A. The left-hander turned in a 4.48 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 178 strikeouts over 182.2 innings in 39 appearances (35 starts) during parts of three seasons in the majors with the Giants.

  • Red Sox's Kyle Harrison: Traded to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Harrison, right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe), right-hander Jose Bello and outfielder James Tibbs from the Giants on Sunday in exchange for Rafael Devers, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Harrison had been slated to start for the Giants in Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers, but he was scratched just minutes before the game after the trade was completed. The left-hander had compiled a 4.56 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 25 strikeouts over 23.2 innings in eight appearances (four starts) for San Francisco. The Red Sox are likely to have Harrison continue his development as a starter, but the team may not have an immediate opening for the 23-year-old in the big-league rotation. Harrison has three minor-league options remaining and could be sent to Triple-A Worcester to continue making regular starts.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Logs five innings in no-decision

Harrison did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings against the Rockies. He struck out six. The left-hander was burned by the long ball Tuesday, giving up home runs to Ryan McMahon and Kyle Farmer. Harrison has made four starts since joining the rotation May 24, with mixed results. The 23-year-old owns a 4.91 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 18.1 innings as a starter, compared to a 3.38 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 5.1 innings out of the bullpen.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Cleared for next start

Harrison (elbow) is listed as the Giants' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Rockies in Colorado. Harrison's previous start last Wednesday against the Padres was cut short after he was struck on the left elbow by a comebacker midway through the fifth inning, but he escaped the incident with nothing more than a bruise. The southpaw was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session over the weekend and looks set to pitch Tuesday with no restrictions. However, Harrison -- who owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB in 13.1 innings over his previous three starts -- won't make for a comfortable streaming option in a road start at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Nursing bruised elbow

Harrison was diagnosed with a left elbow contusion after getting hit by a comebacker during Wednesday's game against San Diego, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Harrison took a grounder off his elbow during the fifth inning of Wednesday's contest and was immediately pulled from the game. However, it appears he escaped from the incident with only a bruise. A team day off Monday will give Harrison an extra day to rest before his next scheduled start, but the Giants will wait a few days to see how he recovers before they pencil him in for another outing. The southpaw allowed five runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out three batters in 4.2 frames Wednesday and finished with a no-decision.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Works five scoreless in win

Harrison (1-1) got the win after throwing five innings of shutout ball in Friday's 2-0 win over the Marlins. He allowed one hit, walked three and struck out five. In his second start of the season since transitioning from the bullpen, Harrison had a longer leash and took advantage of it, working five shutout innings on just 80 pitches. In his two starts (nine innings), he's allowed just two runs with nine strikeouts. With Justin Verlander (pectoral) on the way back from the injured list, the 23-year-old Harrison might not get the chance to start again in the immediate future, but he's made a strong case to be the team's choice to make spot starts should injuries strike the Giants' rotation again.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Picking up another start

Harrison is slated to start Friday's game against the Marlins in Miami. After getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento on May 4, Harrison initially worked out of the bullpen, but he moved into the rotation last week following Justin Verlander's (pectoral) placement on the injured list. Harrison took a loss to the Nationals in his first start with the Giants last Saturday, giving up two runs in four innings while striking out four batters. The lefty should have a longer leash in his second start after tossing just 57 pitches against Washington, but he may not be guaranteed any turns through the rotation beyond Friday. Verlander threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and could be ready to return from the IL as soon as next week.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Stuck with loss in Saturday's start

Harrison (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Giants fell 3-0 to the Nationals, giving up two runs on five hits over four innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. The 23-year-old southpaw pitched well in his first big-league start of the season, tossing 43 of 57 pitches for strikes, but Harrison served up a two-run homer to James Wood in the first inning and the Giants' offense never woke up. With Justin Verlander (pectoral) on the shelf, Harrison will get at least one more turn through the rotation, and he should get stretched out enough to potentially qualify for a win next weekend in Miami. Through 9.1 MLB innings in 2025, Harrison has a 3.86 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Moving into rotation

The Giants announced that Harrison will start Saturday's game against the Nationals, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Harrison will take over the rotation spot that previously belonged to Justin Verlander (pectoral), who was placed on the injured list Thursday. The 23-year-old lefty has made four relief appearances since being recalled earlier this month, allowing two runs with a 7:3 K:BB over 5.1 frames. Harrison had been starting at Triple-A Sacramento prior to his call-up but hasn't pitched more than two innings in over three weeks, so he's likely to have a limited workload versus the Nationals.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Fans three in scoreless outing

Harrison tossed two scoreless innings in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Twins, allowing three walks (one intentional) while striking out three. Harrison made his second appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday and has yet to allow a run over three innings of relief. The 23-year-old southpaw is expected to remain in the bullpen for now, though he could eventually make a case to join the starting rotation after missing out on an Opening Day spot. Harrison recorded a 3.46 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 38:8 K:BB across 26 innings in six starts with Sacramento.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Set for bullpen role

The Giants plan to use Harrison in their bullpen after officially recalling him from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Harrison pitched exclusively as a starter during his time in the big leagues the past two seasons and has continued to start with Sacramento after failing to win a spot in the Giants' Opening Day rotation. Over his six outings at Triple-A, Harrison turned in a 3.46 ERA and 38:8 K:BB in 26 innings, and those strong results could give him a case for eventually supplanting Landen Roupp as the Giants' No. 5 starter. For the time being, however, Harrison will work out of the bullpen, where the Giants believe that his improved velocity in his recent appearances with Sacramento will allow him to continue piling up strikeouts as an MLB reliever. Harrison will likely stick around with the Giants through the end of their road trip this weekend before the organization decides whether to move him into a starting role, keep him on hand as a reliever or send him back to Triple-A to make regular turns through the rotation.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Rejoining big club

The Giants recalled Harrison from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Harrison will join the major-league roster for the first time in 2025 after posting a 3.46 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 26 innings in six starts with Sacramento. The right-hander could replace Landen Roupp in the Giants' starting rotation or operate as a bullpen arm with the big club moving forward. In a corresponding move, reliever Lou Trivino was designated for assignment.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Loses out on rotation spot

The Giants optioned Harrison to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Harrison was among the players vying for the final spot in the big-league rotation, but he didn't do much in the Cactus League to help his case, allowing eight earned runs in just 6.2 innings. He'll be joined in Sacramento's rotation by Keaton Winn, leaving Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp as the remaining options for San Francisco.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Weight, velo returning after virus

Harrison showed better velocity in his last Cactus League appearance Sunday versus the Athletics, sitting at 93-to-94 mph and touching 95 mph several times, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The bump up in velocity is encouraging, as Harrison had been sitting in the low-90s in camp after losing 13 pounds due to a virus. However, while his weight and velocity are coming back, Harrison's results this spring have not been encouraging, particularly his last two times out when he surrendered a combined eight runs in 4.2 innings. Meanwhile, Hayden Birdsong (0.75 ERA, 18:0 in 12 innings) and Landen Roupp (3.75 ERA, 14:1 K:BB in 12 frames) have both been excellent. The competition for the fifth spot in the Giants' rotation could come down to the wire.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: May not make rotation

Harrison has fallen behind Landen Roupp this spring in the competition for the Giants' fifth-starter role, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Harrison has given up five runs in 3.2 innings this spring with a 5:1 K:BB. Harrison reached a maximum velocity of 92.3 mph in his last spring outing. He had said before spring training that he's rediscovered his fastball velocity after the pitch dipped below 93 mph on average last season, but that hasn't shown up yet this spring. If he doesn't make the rotation, he's a candidate for the bullpen but could also be kept as a starter at Triple-A.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: First spring appearance Friday

Harrison is expected to pitch in Friday's game against the Brewers following starter Logan Webb, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Harrison said a couple weeks ago that he's rediscovered his fastball velocity after the pitch dipped below 93 mph on average last season, so it will be worth tracking his velocity in camp. It's also encouraging that he's getting into a spring game this week after ending the 2024 season with a shoulder injury. He is expected to open the year in the Giants rotation.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Competing for fifth rotation spot

Harrison and Hayden Birdsong will be among the candidates competing for the fifth spot in the Giants' rotation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Logan Webb, Justin Verlander, Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks are locked into the first four rotation spots. Harrison is likely the favorite to fill the fifth slot after making 24 starts for San Francisco last season, but the gig won't be handed to him. The left-hander posted a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 118:42 K:BB over 124.1 frames in 2024 before his season ended prematurely due to shoulder inflammation. He has no restrictions at the start of spring training.

  • Giants' Kyle Harrison: Lit up for six runs

Harrison (7-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings. Harrison was roughed up for a second straight outing and Tuesday's start was his shortest of the season. The Diamondbacks scored multiple runs in all three innings Harrison worked, which included a two-run homer by Randal Grichuk in the opening frame. Harrison has now allowed 11 runs over his last 7.1 innings and has just two quality starts since the beginning of July. For the year, he owns a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 118:42 K:BB in 124.1 innings and lines up to face the Padres on the road over the weekend.
