  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Notches second save

Seymour worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his second save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Orioles. He didn't strike out a batter. The southpaw has worked his way into a high-leverage role for the Rays, collecting two saves, two holds and a win over his last seven appearances while posting a 3.52 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB in 7.2 innings. Closer Bryan Baker was likely unavailable Wednesday after pitching in three of the prior four games, but Garrett Cleavinger hasn't been used since Sunday, suggesting that Seymour may be the next man up in closing situations for manager Kevin Cash.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Yields homer as opener

Seymour allowed one run on two hits while striking out two across two innings while serving as the opener in the Rays' 7-2 win over the Marlins on Friday. Seymour made his first start of the season Friday against Miami and went two innings as the opener, giving up a solo home run to Connor Norby in the second before handing the keys to Jesse Scholtens. Seymour has yielded a home run in two of his last three outings and has a 5.48 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 21.1 innings this season. It's possible that Seymour operates as the Rays' opener when Scholtens makes his next appearance, which is tentatively slated for next week at home against the Orioles.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Serving as opener Friday

Seymour will start as the opener Friday against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It will be Seymour's first official start of the season, but Jesse Scholtens is still expected to serve as the bulk reliever behind Seymour, according to Topkin. Seymour came up as a starting pitcher but has topped out at just 32 pitches in a single game as a full-time reliever through the first month and a half of the 2026 season.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Making strong case for roster spot

Seymour allowed one hit and no walks in 2.1 scoreless innings during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out four. The 27-year-old left-hander is off to an encouraging start this spring, posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB over 10 frames (four appearances). With Shane McClanahan and Steven Matz expected to have workload limitations to start the year, the Rays are likely to need a couple of long relievers on their Opening Day roster, per Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. That bodes well for the roster chances of Seymour, who recorded a 3.63 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 64:19 K:BB across 57 innings for Tampa Bay in 2025.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Four innings in relief

Seymour allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two across four innings Tuesday against the Orioles. Ryan Pepiot was chased from the game after only three innings, with Seymour throwing the final four frames. Seymour wasn't particularly effective and allowed more than two earned runs for the first time in his last five outings. He also needed 89 pitches to record his 12 outs. Per Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun, Seymour is likely to draw one more start this season, with Sunday against the Blue Jays being the only realistic possibility.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Falls to White Sox

Seymour (3-2) took the loss Thursday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out five. It's the second straight loss for Seymour, who gave up five runs (though just one earned) over four innings in a relief appearance against the Guardians last Friday. Despite his recent stumble, Seymour has been solid when working in the rotation, allowing just four earned runs across 15.1 innings in three starts. The left-hander is currently lined up to face the Blue Jays at home his next time out, should Tampa elect to keep Seymour in the rotation.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Bulk appearance ends in loss

Seymour (3-1) took the loss against the Guardians on Friday, giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings of relief. Seymour entered in the second inning behind opener Griffin Jax and was immediately hurt by a defensive miscue that extended the frame. The error put the leadoff man aboard, allowing the Guardians to capitalize with three two-out runs during a five-run frame that gave them a lead they never relinquished. The left-hander bounced back with three clean innings to finish his outing on a stronger note, but the damage had already been done to stick him with the loss. Though Seymour has been utilized primarily as a reliever, both Friday and at the start of his MLB career, the Rays may opt to transition him back into the rotation, where he's surrendered just one earned run in 10 innings across two starts.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Fans eight in win

Seymour (3-0) allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over Washington. Seymour gave up one run through three innings before two fourth-inning errors put three unearned runs on his line. The Rays scored three runs in the first three frames to lead Seymour to his second straight win. The rookie southpaw threw 57 of 82 pitches for strikes, and he generated 16 whiffs, including eight with his changeup. Seymour has looked impressive since joining the rotation, going 2-0 with a 16:2 K:BB over 10 innings. He owns a 2.97 ERA with a 42:10 K:BB at the MLB level this year. Seymour is projected to face the Guardians at home next weekend.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Carves up Guardians in first start

Seymour (2-0) earned the win Monday against the Guardians, allowing one hit and one walk in five shutout innings. He struck out eight. It was a standout performance from the rookie southpaw, who fanned a season-high eight and poured in 49 of his season-high 67 pitches for strikes in his first career major-league start. It's unclear if Seymour will remain in the rotation, but this showing certainly bodes well for his chances of doing so. Seymour may not be quite ready to handle a typical starter's workload if he takes his next scheduled turn this weekend against the Nationals, though he now owns a strong 3.18 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB over 28.1 big-league frames.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Sent back to Triple-A

The Rays optioned Seymour to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday. Seymour had been serving as a starter with Durham prior to getting called up July 7, but the Rays used him exclusively out of the bullpen during his three-week stay in the majors. The lefty was used mostly in lower-leverage spots and gave up two earned runs while striking out seven batters over 8.2 innings in six appearances during his second stint of the season with the Rays. Tampa Bay called up right-hander Paul Gervase to replace Seymour in the bullpen.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Sent back to Durham

The Rays optioned Seymour to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. The 26-year-old southpaw's first stint in the big leagues lasted just two days, but he was able to scoop up a win in his lone relief appearance in Monday's 11-inning victory over Boston. Though he was charged with a blown save after allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game at 8-8, Seymour saw the Rays score two runs for him in the top of the 11th, then kept the Red Sox off the board in the bottom of the frame to seal the victory. Since Seymour threw 28 pitches in the appearance and was unlikely to be available for the next day or two, the Rays elected to swap him off the active roster for a fresh relief arm in Mason Englert, who was recalled from Triple-A. Seymour should slot back into the rotation as he makes his return to Durham.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Dominating at Triple-A

Seymour has a 2.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 23:3 K:BB in 15 innings across three starts for Triple-A Durham. The only Triple-A pitcher with a higher swinging-strike rate than Seymour (19.4 percent) is Spencer Strider (22.6 percent), who was completing a rehab assignment. Seymour is a lefty with a deceptive three-quarters delivery and a knack for keeping hitters off balance by changing speeds and landing all of his pitches for strikes. His fastball has averaged 89.6 mph (touched 91.6 mph) and he has thrown his changeup as much or more than his fastball while mixing in his cutter and seldom-used curveball and sweeper. Seymour is already on the 40-man roster and could join the big-league rotation whenever there is a need.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Cut from big-league camp

The Rays optioned Seymour to minor-league camp Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Seymour nabbed a spot on the 40-man roster over the offseason after collecting a 2.35 ERA and 162:41 K:BB over 145.1 innings between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in 2024. He'll provide rotation depth at Durham this season.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Nabs 40-man roster spot

The Rays selected Seymour's contract from Triple-A Durham on Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. By adding Seymour to the 40-man roster now, the Rays will shield him from the Rule 5 Draft. Seymour, who turns 26 in December, held a 2.35 ERA and 162:41 K:BB over 145.1 innings between Double-A Montgomery and Durham in 2024.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Climbs to Triple-A

Seymour was promoted from Double-A Montgomery to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings for the Bulls. The 25-year-old southpaw actually made two starts at Triple-A late in 2021 just to keep pitching after the High-A season wrapped up. Since then he's undergone Tommy John surgery and this is his first full season since the procedure. Seymour's fastball velocity isn't great (sits in the low-90s), but he's got a plus changeup and a quality slider. He logged a 2.36 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 91.1 innings at Double-A prior to his promotion.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Back in action

Seymour (elbow) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.1 scoreless innings Thursday against Single-A Kannapolis. He didn't factor into the decision. Seymour has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and after making a handful of rehab appearances, he was officially activated from the injured list and assigned to Single-A Charleston. The 24-year-old worked his way to Triple-A Durham during the 2021 campaign (no runs allowed and nine strikeouts over 10 frames) and was stationed at Double-A Montgomery in 2022 before suffering a season-ending elbow injury. Given the nature of Seymour's injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the organization monitor his innings closely throughout the remainder of the minor-league season.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Seymour (elbow) is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Montgomery and underwent Tommy John surgery this week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Seymour posted an 8.10 ERA over 16.2 innings to open the season for the Biscuits before landing on the injured list in early May. The 2020 second-round pick will miss the rest of the season and will also be sidelined for at least the first half of 2023.
