  Gimenez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a two-run triple and an RBI single in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics on Friday. Gimenez gave the Blue Jays their first runs of the 2026 season in the fifth inning, when outfield miscommunication between left fielder Tyler Soderstrom and center fielder Lawrence Butler resulted in a two-run triple. Gimenez followed that up with an walk-off RBI single in the ninth, which brought Kazuma Okamoto home to give Toronto the Opening Day victory in front of a home crowd. It's been a busy start to 2026 for Gimenez, who played a key role in Team Venezuela's triumph in the World Baseball Classic. He saw his slash line drop last year in what was his first campaign with the Blue Jays but will look to get back to the kind of form he had with the Guardians in 2022, when he recorded an .837 OPS with 20 steals, 17 homers and 69 RBI in 557 plate appearances.

Getting the start at shortstop and batting ninth, Gimenez nabbed his first steal of the spring in the fifth inning off the battery of Dennis Santana and Henry Davis. The 27-year-old infielder is coming off a rough first season with the Blue Jays in which he managed a weak .598 OPS and swiped only 12 bags in 14 attempts over 101 regular-season games, but Gimenez indicated at the beginning of camp that he was bothered by a high-ankle sprain late in the year. If he stays healthy and gets more comfortable with his new team after Toronto's run to the World Series, he could regain the form that saw him steal exactly 30 bases in both 2023 and 2024 for Cleveland while slashing a more palatable .252/.306/.368.

  Gimenez admitted he was still playing through pain at the end of last season after returning from a high-ankle sprain in August, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports. "Anyone who's had a high-ankle sprain," Gimenez said in camp this week, "they know." The 27-year-old infielder was an overall disappointment in his first season with Toronto, slashing a career-worst .210/.285/.313 during the regular season and swiping just 12 bases after back-to-back 30-steal campaigns for Cleveland. Gimenez will shift to shortstop on a full-time basis in 2026, and while his defense should still be an asset, his ability to stay healthy and provide some value with his bat and legs would be a welcome sight in a Jays offense that will be adjusting to the offseason departure of Bo Bichette.
