  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Ready for second live BP

May (elbow) will throw his second live bullpen session Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. May threw a live bullpen session Tuesday and will follow that up with a second session Friday. He won't return during the regular season, but he is hoping to be healthy enough to be available for the postseason.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Throws bullpen session

May (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. May landed on the 15-day injured list last week with right elbow neuritis. While May appears to be trending in the right direction, Red Sox manager Alex Cora conceded that the righty has "maybe" run out of time to contribute down the stretch. Even if May is deemed healthy enough to return this month, his role is very much in flux, as he's posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings with Boston.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Officially placed on IL

The Red Sox placed May on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow neuritis. The Red Sox haven't officially ruled out May for the remainder of the regular season, though the timing of his injury would likely allow him to make just one more start in September if he returns after a minimum-length stay. Connelly Early was promoted from Triple-A Worcester to fill the void in Boston's rotation and will make his MLB debut Tuesday against the Athletics.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Heading to 15-day injured list

The Red Sox will place May on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. May had been scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, but the Red Sox will now call up Connelly Early from Triple-A Worcester to take the hill instead. Though the nature of May's injury isn't known, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com relays that it's not considered serious, so the right-hander could have a shot to return later this month. May has been inconsistent during his time in Boston, posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Set for limited bulk-relief outing

May will work in relief behind opening pitcher Brennan Bernardino for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, though manager Alex Cora said that the right-handed May will be available for up to 40 pitches, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Since May will be pitching on three days' rest after most recently starting in last Saturday's 10-3 loss to the Pirates, he'll face a tighter restriction than if he were operating as bulk reliever on normal rest. Cora noted that the Red Sox aren't yet preparing for May to move to the bullpen on a permanent basis, as the 27-year-old is still likely to make a start during next week's series versus the Athletics. Since being acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline, May has produced a 5.68 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB in 25.1 innings through his first five outings with the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Won't start this week

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that May will be available out of the bullpen this week, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The Red Sox want to keep the rest of their starting pitchers on turn following Thursday's off day, so May will be available to pitch in relief, if needed. He will rejoin the rotation next week, likely during the series against the Athletics. May has been hit or miss during his five starts with Boston, posting a 5.68 ERA and 25:11 K:BB over 25.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Poor showing in loss

May (7-10) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Yankees. May is now 1-3 with 10 runs allowed over 20 innings across his four starts with the Red Sox. The long ball was his primary issue Sunday, as he allowed a two-run home run to Jazz Chisholm and a pair of solo shots to Trent Grisham. On the year, May is now at a 4.79 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 117:50 K:BB through 124 innings over 23 games (22 starts). May's next start is projected to be at home versus the Pirates.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Takes ninth loss

May (7-9) took the loss Monday, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings against Baltimore. He struck out five. May worked around traffic to post six solid innings Monday, but Boston's offense didn't heat up until too late in the loss. Since joining the Red Sox, the right-hander has gone 1-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 15.2 innings in three starts.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Blanks Astros

May (7-8) picked up the win Tuesday against Houston, allowing five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings. May notched his first win with the Red Sox after yielding three runs in 3.2 innings during his Boston debut last week. Tuesday's outing marked May's third scoreless start of the campaign, and he fell one strikeout short of tying his season high. In 113.2 innings this season, May has a 4.67 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 109:45 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Orioles his next time out.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Labors in Red Sox debut

May (6-8) took the loss Wednesday against the Royals, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk in 3.2 innings. He struck out four. Kansas City made May work, as the hurler was unable to make it through four innings despite throwing 91 pitches. Wednesday represented the shortest outing of the season for May, who has worked at least five frames on just two occasions over his last six starts. The 27-year-old right-hander holds a lackluster 4.93 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 101:44 K:BB across a career-high 107.2 innings, and he'll likely remain a volatile fantasy option in Houston against the first-place Astros his next time out.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Team debut pushed to Wednesday

May is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Royals at Fenway Park in what will be his Red Sox debut. Boston had previously listed May as its scheduled starter for Sunday's game against the Astros, but the right-hander will instead have to wait a few more days beyond that to make his team debut. Lucas Giolito is now slated to take the hill for the Red Sox's final contest of the weekend series with Houston.

  • Red Sox's Dustin May: Joining Boston

The Red Sox acquired May from the Dodgers on Thursday in exchange for outfielders James Tibbs and Zach Ehrhard, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After logging a 4.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 104 innings in his first 19 appearances with Los Angeles this season after missing all of 2024 while recovering from flexor tendon and UCL revision surgery as well as a separate surgery to address an esophageal tear, May will be sent across the country to join the Red Sox. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that the team planned to move May into the bullpen, though the 27-year-old righty is likely to work as a starter with the Red Sox, who have seen the back end of their rotation get hit hard by injuries.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Shifting to relief

Manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that May will work out of the bullpen going forward and will be available as a multi-inning reliever Friday against the Rays, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. The right-hander worked behind Shohei Ohtani as a bulk reliever last week and will now be making the full shift to the bullpen. May has otherwise exclusively worked as a traditional starter this season, and his performance in his first year back from flexor tendon and UCL revision surgery has been underwhelming with a 4.85 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 97:43 K:BB across 104 innings.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Stumbles in fifth frame

May (6-7) took the loss Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out five. May looked sharp early Sunday, allowing just one run through his first four frames. However, he gave up three runs on three consecutive one-out hits in the fifth, capped by an Alex Bregman two-run homer. It's been an up-and-down year overall for May, who's given up four or more runs in three of his last five outings. His ERA sits at 4.85 with a 1.35 WHIP and 97:43 K:BB across 104 innings this season.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Back in starting role Sunday

May is slated to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. For the first time all season, May worked out of the bullpen in his most recent appearance against the Twins on Monday, when he tossed 4.2 scoreless frames in bulk relief behind Shohei Ohtani, who was limited to three innings. Ohtani isn't scheduled to pitch again until Wednesday, so the Dodgers will return May to his traditional starting role for the series finale in Boston. Over his 17 starts this season, May has gone 5-6 with a 4.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 88:40 K:BB across 94.1 innings.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Grabs win in bulk-relief outing

May (6-6) allowed five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 scoreless relief innings to earn the win Monday over the Twins. May worked in tandem with Shohei Ohtani, who allowed one run over the first three innings of the game. This could be a valuable reset for May, who had been torched to the tune of a 6.05 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across his previous seven starts, spanning 38.2 innings. For the season, May is at a 4.73 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 92:43 K:BB through 99 innings. This bulk-relief outing was expected to be a one-time situation for May, though it's not yet clear when he'll next pitch, especially with Blake Snell (shoulder) nearing a return that would give the Dodgers their healthiest rotation yet in 2025.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Working in tandem with Ohtani

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that May will be used out of the bullpen in Monday's game against the Twins as part of a pitching tandem with Shohei Ohtani, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. May's upcoming relief appearance will be his first at the big-league level since 2020, though Roberts suggested it would be a "one-off" arrangement. Though May doesn't appear to have lost his spot in the rotation, the Dodgers are hoping that working behind Ohtani will yield better results for the 27-year-old, who was roughed up for seven earned runs on five hits and four walks over 4.2 innings against the Giants in his final start before the All-Star break. Roberts said that the Dodgers are planning to limit Ohtani to three innings Monday, so May should be well positioned to come away with a win if he's able to exit the relief appearance with Los Angeles in the lead.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Hit hard by Giants

May (5-6) allowed seven runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Giants. May gave up a pair of solo home runs as well as a two-run triple. He ran into trouble in the fifth inning, and Anthony Banda was unable to cut off the Giants' rally, which ultimately was too much for the Dodgers to overcome. The seven runs allowed matched a season high for May, who has had mixed results at best since the start of June. He's now at a 4.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 88:40 K:BB through 94.1 innings over 17 starts this season. The Dodgers' rotation is getting healthier with Shohei Ohtani building up and Tyler Glasnow returning from a shoulder injury Wednesday, but it's safe to assume May will continue to have a spot at least until Blake Snell (shoulder) is ready to return.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Dazzles in win over White Sox

May (5-5) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven-plus innings to earn the win over the White Sox on Thursday. May retired the first 16 batters he faced in this dominant outing, which also saw him pitch into the eighth inning for the first time this year. That's when he started to fade, allowing a two-run home run to Brooks Baldwin that ended the outing. May was mediocre in June, posting a 5.67 ERA across 27 innings over his five starts, but July is off to a better start for him after he took advantage of an easy matchup. The right-hander is now at a 4.52 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 84:36 K:BB over 89.2 innings through 16 starts. His next outing is expected to be on the road versus the Brewers.

  • Dodgers' Dustin May: Battles to no-decision

May took a no-decision after throwing four innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in Friday's 5-4 win over the Royals. May battled through his shortest start of the season. Walks were again an issue for the 27-year-old -- after three more walks against the Royals, he has now walked 13 batters over his last four starts. It will be interesting to see how the right-hander will hold up over the second half of the season, as he's already up to over 82 innings on the year, well past his previous career high of 56 innings.
