Fernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

Fernandez was designated for assignment earlier this week but will remain with the Tigers after going unclaimed on waivers. The 26-year-old has a 3.90 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB over 27.2 innings at Triple-A, but he struggled in the majors with seven runs allowed across 3.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jose Fernandez: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Tigers designated Fernandez for assignment Wednesday.

He'll cede his spot on the 40-man roster to lefty Tyler Alexander, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo in advance of his scheduled start for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the White Sox. Fernandez was roughed up for eight runs (seven earned) in four relief appearances with the big club earlier this season and posted a 3.90 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 27.2 innings with Toledo.

  • Tigers' Jose Fernandez: Returns to minors

Fernandez was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Angels.

Fernandez made four appearances after being promoted April 23 and gave up seven runs on six hits and five walks over 3.2 innings. Thursday's scheduled starter, Ryan Carpenter, will be recalled in a corresponding move.

  • Tigers' Jose Fernandez: Promoted to big leagues

Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

Fernandez will add bullpen depth for Detroit following the loss of Blaine Hardy (forearm) to the 10-day injured list. Fernandez has compiled a 2.89 ERA with eight strikeouts over 9.1 innings this season for the Mud Hens.

  • Tigers' Jose Fernandez: Removed from bullpen competition

The Tigers optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

Before being claimed off waivers by the Tigers this offseason, Fernandez reached the big leagues for the first time in 2018 as a September callup for the Blue Jays. Over 13 appearances, the reliever surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and four walks across 10.1 innings. Though the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers for a while, Fernandez will first need to impress in the minors before getting a look with the big club.

  • Tigers' Jose Fernandez: Claimed off waivers

Fernandez was claimed off waivers by the Tigers on Friday.

Fernandez spent the month of September up in the big leagues for Toronto after working at the Triple-A level for a majority of the season. In 13 appearances with the Blue Jays, he allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out six in 10.2 innings of relief. The 25-year-old could use a little more seasoning in the minors but should have a chance to win a major-league roster spot in spring training.
