He'll cede his spot on the 40-man roster to lefty Tyler Alexander, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo in advance of his scheduled start for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the White Sox. Before being claimed off waivers by the Tigers this offseason, Fernandez reached the big leagues for the first time in 2018 as a September callup for the Blue Jays. Over 13 appearances, the reliever surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and four walks across 10.1 innings. Though the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers for a while, Fernandez will first need to impress in the minors before getting a look with the big club.

Fernandez spent the month of September up in the big leagues for Toronto after working at the Triple-A level for a majority of the season. In 13 appearances with the Blue Jays, he allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out six in 10.2 innings of relief. The 25-year-old could use a little more seasoning in the minors but should have a chance to win a major-league roster spot in spring training.
