  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Will not be on ALDS roster

Berrios (elbow) has yet to resume throwing and will not be part of the Blue Jays' ALDS roster, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. A second opinion on Berrios' right elbow confirmed that he has no structural damage, but he's not close to being ready to pitch in a game setting. While i's possible Berrios will be an option later in the playoffs if the Blue Jays make a run, that won't be a consideration until he's ramped up his throwing.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Avoids structural damage

An MRI revealed Berrios (elbow) doesn't have any structural damage, and he will be seeking a second opinion, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports Friday. Berrios was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to right elbow inflammation. While Friday's news is encouraging, manager John Schneider indicated Berrios likely wouldn't return in 2025 unless the Blue Jays were to make a deep run in the playoffs. Toronto bumped Berrios to the bullpen Sept. 19 and he surrendered three runs in two innings during his only appearance afterward.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Bound for IL

The Blue Jays placed Berrios on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right elbow inflammation, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Berrios is slated to receive an MRI to determine the severity of his injury, but his move to the IL will keep him out for the rest of the regular season. Paxton Schultz was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Relegated to bullpen

Manager John Schneider said Friday that Berrios will be used out of the bullpen going forward, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. The arrival of Trey Yesavage on Monday left the Blue Jays with six arms in their rotation, so the team will clear the logjam by shifting Berrios to a long-relief role. The 31-year-old right-hander owns a 4.06 ERA and 1.29 WHIP alongside a 135:54 K:BB through 164 innings on the year, and he could make his first relief appearance of the season soon, considering he hasn't pitched since Tuesday.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Struggles in no-decision

Berrios did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's win over Tampa Bay. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over four innings. All the damage against Berrios came in the third inning when Brandon Lowe was credited with a three-run homer that stood up on replay, even though a fan was ruled to have interfered with the play by reaching out and catching it. It was Berrios' first start this season in which he did not record a strikeout, and he generated only two whiffs on 78 pitches. He hasn't earned a win since Aug. 12 and has just one quality start over his last eight appearances. During that span, Berrios has produced a 4.86 ERA, raising his season mark to 4.06 alongside a 135:54 K:BB through 164 frames. He's projected for a home matchup with the Red Sox next week.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Rebounds in no-decision

Berrios didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk in 5.1 innings. He struck out four. After working a season-low two innings his last time out in Cincinnati, Berrios rediscovered his form to throw 5.1 solid innings Wednesday. The veteran right-hander had tossed at least five frames in each of his first 14 outings of the season, though he's been able to last at least five innings in just nine of his last 15 appearances. Berrios still holds a 3.99 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 135:52 K:BB across 29 starts, and he'll be in search of some consistency in a scheduled matchup against the division-rival Rays next week.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Quick hook in no-decision

Berrios came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 12-9 win over the Reds, surrendering six runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over two innings. He struck out two. The veteran right-hander hadn't taken the mound since Aug. 23, but the extended rest didn't seem to help Berrios, who needed 66 pitches (35 strikes) to record just six outs. The blow to his ERA was cushioned by an Isiah Kiner-Falefa throwing error in the second inning, but it's still the seventh time in 11 starts since the beginning of July that Berrios has been tagged for at least four runs, a stretch in which he carries a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 2.4 HR/9 and 42:14 K:BB over 52.2 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next outing at home early next week against the Astros.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Won't start this week

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Berrios won't make his next start until Tuesday in Cincinnati, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Berrios will have gone more than a week between starts, as he most recently took the hill in Miami this past Saturday, when he struck out eight batters and allowed two earned runs over 6.1 innings. The veteran right-hander doesn't seem to be dealing with an injury coming out of the start, but he'll be pushed to the back of the pitching schedule as the Blue Jays realign their rotation ahead of an important series this weekend against the NL-leading Brewers and next weekend against the Yankees, who sit four games behind Toronto in the AL East. The Blue Jays are now tentatively slated to have their top three members of the rotation -- Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman and Max Scherzer -- make one start apiece in both of those series.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Sharp in no-decision Saturday

Berrios came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Marlins, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The veteran right-hander blanked Miami for six frames before running out of gas in the seventh, exiting the mound after generating 33 called or swinging strikes in 81 pitches (56 total strikes). Berrios was in line for his 10th win of the season, but a blown save by Jeff Hoffman forced him to settle for his 14th quality start. Berrios has given up three earned runs or fewer in five of his last six outings, posting a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB over 31.2 innings during that stretch. He'll look to build on this performance in his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Brewers.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Yields six runs in loss

Berrios (9-5) took the loss against the Rangers on Sunday, allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out two across 4.1 innings. He did not issue a walk. Berrios entered Sunday's game having won four of his last five starts. That momentum was brought to a screeching halt, with Berrios giving up two home runs before being pulled midway through the fifth after tossing 87 pitches (56 strikes). It was the fourth time he has given up six runs in a game, with the last instance taking place July 2 against the Yankees. Berrios has yielded 140 hits (across 146.1 innings) this season, which is fifth most in the American League. He'll aim to get back into the win column in his next start, which is tentatively lined up for next weekend on the road against the Marlins.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Spins 5.1 shutout frames in win

Berrios (9-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing two hits and four walks in 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out three. Tuesday marked Berrios' first scoreless start since June 27 in Boston, and the two hits allowed matched a season low. However, the four walks fell one short of tying a season high, and the right-hander has surpassed five strikeouts on just one occasion over his last eight outings. Berrios has a weak 4.95 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB across those last eight appearances (40 innings) since the start of July, though he'll try to build on Tuesday's positive showing this weekend at home versus the Rangers.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Another short outing

Berrios came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 9-8 win over the Orioles, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. A throwing error by Ernie Clement extended the first inning for the O's and helped lead to three runs, and Berrios wound up leaving the mound after 73 pitches (49 strikes) when Jordan Westburg took him deep for a two-run shot in the fifth. It's the third time in his last six starts that Berrios has failed to last five innings, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 5.83 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB over 29.1 innings. He'll try to get back on track in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Colorado.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Pockets win in quality start

Berrios (7-4) picked up the win Friday in a 6-2 victory over the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. The veteran righty needed 85 pitches (54 strikes) to record his 13th quality start of the season, and sixth in 10 outings since the beginning of June. Over that stretch, Berrios has produced a 3.79 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 43:16 K:BB through 57 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Baltimore.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Notches sixth win

Berrios (6-4) earned the win Sunday over the Giants, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out five. Berrios was solid early, holding San Francisco to one run through his first four innings, though he'd allow another three runs in his final 1.2 frames, capped by a Matt Chapman two-run homer with two outs in the sixth. Despite the rocky finish, Berrios eventually came away with the win, his fourth in his last six outings. The right-hander sports a 3.87 ERA through 21 starts (121 innings) this season with a 1.26 WHIP and 102:42 K:BB. Berrios is currently lined up to face the Tigers on the road his next time out.

Berrios was done in by a pair of two-run shots from Austin Wynns and Tyler Soderstrom in the second and third innings, respectively. Berrios had gone 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA over his previous four outings since his last loss June 15. It was his shortest start of the 2025 campaign, and he generated only three whiffs, his second fewest in any outing this year. Berrios will enter the All-Star break with a 3.75 ERA and a 97:41 K:BB across 115.1 innings this season. He's allowed fewer than two runs in six of his last nine starts but gave up a combined 16 runs in the other three.

Berrios (5-3) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings against the White Sox. He struck out four. Berrios was effective Monday, limiting baserunners and working efficiently despite not recording many strikeouts, needing just 76 pitches to get through his outing. The right-hander has been boom-or-bust lately, allowing six earned runs in two of his past eight starts but one or fewer in the other six, resulting in a 2.61 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 48.1 innings during that span. On the season, the 31-year-old holds a 3.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 112.1 innings in 19 starts.

Berrios did not factor into the decision in Wednesdays 11-9 win over the Yankees, allowing six runs on nine hits and no walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Berrios was cruising with an 8-0 lead through four innings before surrendering six runs and failing to escape the fifth. It was just the second time in 18 starts the 31-year-old hasn't completed at least five frames, though he's now allowed six earned runs in a game three times this season. He'll carry a 3.64 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 92:37 K:BB across 106.1 innings into a favorable matchup with the White Sox next week.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Fans eight in seven shutout innings

Berrios (4-3) earned the win Friday against the Red Sox, giving up no runs on four hits and one walk in seven innings. He struck out eight. Berrios fanned at least eight Friday for the first time since May 29, and he's now up to 11 quality starts on the campaign. Seven of those efforts have come in his last eight outings, during which the veteran right-hander boasts a 2.16 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB across these last 50 frames. Up next for Berrios is a scheduled home matchup versus a dangerous Yankees lineup.

Berrios (3-3) earned the win against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out five across 7.2 innings. Berrios gave up two baserunners in the first inning, but he settled in to retire 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. He was efficient from the mound, needing just 98 pitches (58 strikes) to work into the eighth inning, which was sorely needed after the Blue Jays' bullpen game Friday. It was the longest outing of the season for Berrios and a nice bounce back from his previous outing against the Phillies, when he yielded six runs across 4.2 innings. He's slated to make his next start on the road at Fenway Park against the Red Sox next weekend.
