Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Unlikely to pitch this postseason
Rotowire
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that while Giolito's right elbow injury is not as bad as the team feared it might be, the hurler is unlikely to be available at any point during the postseason, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Giolito seems to have been cleared of any structural damage after a visit with Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, but the right-hander needs extended rest, so he's done for the season even if the Red Sox make a deep postseason run. It's poor timing for the Red Sox and also Giolito, who will enter free agency this winter. Giolito had a nice bounce-back 2025 campaign, posting a 3.41 ERA and 121:56 K:BB over 145 frames, but he'll head into the free-agent market with health questions.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Out for wild card with elbow issue
Rotowire
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Giolito is dealing with a right elbow injury and will not be on the team's American League Wild Card Series roster against the Yankees, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
If healthy, Giolito would have started a potential Game 3. Instead, he is headed to visit with Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, who performed the right-hander's March 2024 internal brace surgery. More clarity on Giolito's possible availability for later playoff rounds could be available following that exam. Connelly Early would now seem to be the favorite to start a potential Game 3 against the Yankees, though Cora declined Monday to divulge who would pitch that contest.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Control issues continue Tuesday
Rotowire
Giolito came away with a no-decision Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out three.
The right-hander threw 61 of 98 pitches for strikes as he once again had trouble avoiding free passes. Over his last five starts, Giolito has a 22:18 K:BB in 25.2 innings, but he's given up more than two earned runs just once during that stretch, posting a 3.16 ERA despite a 1.60 WHIP. He currently lines up to take the mound on the final day of the regular season, at home against a Tigers team that has collapsed down the stretch, but with the Red Sox also fighting to lock up a wild-card spot, it's not clear if they will actually risk Giolito's wildness if a playoff berth is on the line.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Struggles with command vs. A's
Rotowire
Giolito didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's win against the Athletics, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings.
Giolito worked around constant traffic early and stranded six runners through four frames to limit the damage to one run, but it caught up to him in the fifth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out, the right-hander was lifted, and all three inherited runners came around to score. The rough outing snapped a strong four-start stretch in which Giolito had posted a 1.46 ERA and 22:10 K:BB across 24.2 innings. He is slated to take the mound against the Blue Jays next, which is a tough assignment given that Toronto leads MLB in runs scored in the back half of the season.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Strong effort in loss
Rotowire
Giolito (10-4) took the loss Friday versus the Yankees after giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out six batters across 5.2 innings.
Giolito put the Red Sox in an early hole by giving up a home run to Aaron Judge in the first inning, and an RBI single from Cody Bellinger in the third was all New York needed to remain in front for the rest of the game. Giolito was pulled one out before he could deliver his third quality start in his last four appearances. Still, he will take a season-best 3.31 ERA into his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come against the Athletics on Wednesday.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Handed third loss
Rotowire
Giolito (10-3) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings to take the loss versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Giolito threw just 53 of 94 pitches for strikes. He struggled in the second inning after an error allowed the Diamondbacks to put together a three-run rally, and that was enough to sink the Red Sox in what ended up being a 5-1 contest. Prior to Saturday, Giolito had allowed just five runs over his previous four starts, covering 25 innings in that span. While he's had a few shaky outings this season, this was just his third loss and his first since July 18 versus the Cubs. The 31-year-old has maintained a 3.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 107:46 K:BB through 130.1 innings over 23 starts. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Yankees.

Rotowire
Giolito (10-2) earned the win Sunday over the Pirates, allowing a run on three hits and five walks over six innings. He struck out six.
While Giolito's five walks were the second-most he's issued in a start this season, the right-hander was able to minimize the damage en route to his 10th victory. Giolito has gone 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in his last seven outings (43.2 innings), lowering his ERA to 3.38 on the season with a 1.23 WHIP and 105:43 K:BB across 22 starts (125.1 innings). He's currently slated to face the Diamondbacks on the road his next time out.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Another shaky no-decision
Rotowire
Giolito allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Thursday.
Giolito left the game in line for the loss, but the Red Sox were able to tie it up in the sixth inning before rallying for the win. This was the third time in six starts Giolito has fallen short of the five-inning mark. He's allowed 15 runs over 33.2 innings with a 21:14 K:BB in that span. That's not terrible, but the inconsistency is frustrating -- he's allowed just one run in three of those outings. He's now at a 3.72 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 91:37 K:BB through 111.1 innings over 20 starts this season. Giolito will look to rebound in his next start, which is tentatively projected to be a favorable road matchup in Baltimore.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Bounces back with quality start
Rotowire
Giolito didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out five.
After issuing a season-worst six free passes in his last outing Aug. 9, Giolito regained his control and tossed 63 of 92 pitches for strikes en route to his 12th quality start of the season, and his third in his last four trips to the mound. The right-hander has turned his season around after a rough beginning to his Boston tenure -- he held a 6.42 ERA on June 4, but in 12 starts since then he's delivered a 2.34 ERA, 1.07 WHIPP and 60:23 K:BB over 73 innings while going 7-1. Giolito will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Walks six in no-decision
Rotowire
Giolito allowed four runs on five hits and six walks while striking out one over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Saturday.
Giolito hasn't had control problems this year, but he struggled to find the strike zone Saturday, landing just 55 of 97 pitches for strikes. The six walks were double his previous season high, but he's now allowed four or more runs in three of his last five starts. Giolito has a reasonable 3.77 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 82:33 K:BB through 100.1 innings over 18 starts this year, and his recent shaky performance can be chalked up to a tough run of opponents. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Marlins.

Rotowire
Giolito (8-2) earned the win Sunday over the Astros, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over eight innings. He struck out four.
It was an excellent performance from Giolito, who went a season-high eight innings, with Houston's lone run coming on Carlos Correa's homer in the fourth. After a rocky start to his Red Sox tenure, Giolito has turned into one of Boston's more reliable starters, posting a 2.03 ERA over his last 10 outings (62 innings). Overall, the right-hander sports a 3.57 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 81:27 K:BB through 17 starts (95.2 innings) this season. Rotowire
Giolito (7-2) allowed a run on five hits and two walks over six innings Tuesday, striking out five and earning a win over the Twins.

He delivered a strong bounce-back outing after coughing up a combined nine runs over 9.1 innings in his previous two outings. He fired 61 of 101 pitches for strikes and forced 13 whiffs, including nine with his changeup. Giolito now owns a 3.80 ERA over 87.2 innings this season, but it's been a very up-and-down year; he's given up two earned runs or fewr in 10 of his 16 starts, but he's been tagged with five or more runs in four outings. Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Shaky in no-decision
Rotowire
Giolito didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out two.
That's now consecutive starts with at least four runs allowed by Giolito, who had been riding a six-game quality start streak before this recent downturn. The four innings and two punchouts were both the veteran right-hander's fewest since his June 4 outing versus the Angels. Giolito still holds a quality 3.97 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 72:24 K:BB over 81.2 frames, and he'll try to right the ship in Minnesota against the Twins the next time he takes the mound.

Giolito (6-2) took the loss in Friday's 4-1 defeat against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks across 5.1 innings while recording six strikeouts.
Giolito ran into trouble immediately Friday, issuing back-to-back walks and serving up a three-run homer to Seiya Suzuki before recording his first out. Rotowire
Giolito (4-1) earned the win against the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing one unearned run on six hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings.
Giolito received plenty of run support from the Red Sox batters Saturday, and the extra rest between innings seemed to benefit the 30-year-old right-hander. He has logged four quality starts in a row and has given up only two earned runs over that span while striking out 24 batters in 25 innings. Giolito now sports a 3.99 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB across 58.2 innings this season. He's in line to face the Nationals on the road next weekend, when he'll look to make it three wins in five starts.

Since a six-run disaster against Atlanta on May 17, the 30-year-old has been dependable, pitching to a 2.87 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB across 31.1 frames. The veteran righty didn't surrender any extra-base hits and missed plenty of bats with 18 swinging strikes. Giolito has had three bad blowouts during which he's yielded six or more runs, but he's also allowed one run or fewer five times in nine total starts. He's given up just one run -- which was unearned -- and six hits across 12 frames over his past two appearances, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to be a road matchup in San Francisco.

Giolito bounced back from one of his worst starts of the season with one of his best. He finished with a season-high 13 whiffs, and his velocity was up a couple of ticks. He's lined up to take the mound again next week against Seattle.
