  • Mark Canha: Hits free agency

Canha was released by the Royals on Thursday. Canha was designated for assignment Monday and cleared waivers. Rather than being outrighted, the Royals released Canha, and he'll now be free to pursue another opportunity around the league.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: DFA'd by Kansas City

The Royals activated Canha (elbow) from the 10-day injured list Monday and designated him for assignment. Canha had played nine rehab games after being placed on the shelf July 8 due to left elbow epicondylitis, and though he's now back to full health, the Royals have decided that they don't have a spot for him on their active roster. The 36-year-old is likely to go unclaimed off waivers before electing free agency. Canha slashed just .212/.272/.265 in 46 contests before landing on the IL.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Rehab moving to Triple-A

The Royals transferred Canha's (elbow) rehab assignment from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Canha appeared in three games for Northwest Arkansas, going 3-for-11 with a home run. He'll likely play in at least a couple of games for Omaha before the Royals potentially bring him back from the 10-day injured list for this weekend's series versus the White Sox.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Progressing in rehab

Canha (elbow) went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and RBI with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Sunday. Canha made his third rehab appearance with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Sunday as he works his way back from left elbow epicondylitis. He's 3-for-11 with a homer and five RBI so far during the assignment. Before landing on the injured list July 8, the veteran was batting .212/.272/.265 with just four extra-base hits and six RBI over 46 games. Canha's versatility could help him carve out at-bats, but steady playing time is unlikely with Mike Yastrzemski and Randal Grichuk joining the roster and Jac Caglianone (hamstring) nearing a return.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Beginning rehab assignment

Canha (elbow) is expected to start a rehab assignment Friday with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Canha will start up a rehab assignment exactly one month after being placed on the injured list with left elbow epicondylitis, or tennis elbow. It's unclear how long of an assignment Canha will require, but he should be back later this month.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Ready to resume hitting

Canha (elbow) is scheduled to begin a hitting progression Monday, MLB.com reports. Canha was placed on the injured list July 8 due to left elbow epicondylitis. He received an injection that same day to relieve discomfort in his elbow, and he was cleared to resume throwing shortly after the All-Star break. The outfielder is now ready to take the next step in his recovery by hitting, and if all goes well, he could soon be cleared to head out on a rehab assignment.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Lands on IL with elbow injury

The Royals placed Canha on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left elbow epicondylitis. Epicondylitis is the formal diagnosis of "tennis elbow," and it's not clear how long the injury might sideline Canha. Cam Devanney has taken Canha's spot on the roster.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Hits first homer of season

Canha went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Canha was in the lineup for the first time in July and delivered a solo shot to pad the Royals' lead in the fifth inning. The 36-year-old hit just .125 (4-for-32) over 14 games in June and continues to see limited playing time. With Drew Waters' demotion to Triple-A Omaha on Friday, Canha will have a little more opportunity to get starts in left field, though he'll have to compete with fellow right-handed hitter Nick Loftin as well as fourth outfielder John Rave. Canha is slashing .220/.281/.275 with one homer, five RBI, nine runs scored and no stolen bases over 121 plate appearances, so he's unlikely to be a strong fantasy option, especially with limited playing time.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Struggling to find playing time

Canha is out of the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals. Canha has been starting regularly against left-handed pitching and even began to see a few more opportunities versus righties a couple weeks ago after the Royals phased out Hunter Renfroe before releasing him, but Canha's playing time has since tailed off. He's made just one start since May 26 and is unlikely to see his outlook improve anytime soon after the Royals called up top prospect Jac Caglianone from Triple-A Omaha earlier this week.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Playing time trending up

Canha will start in right field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Twins. With Kyle Isbel (illness) on the bench for the second day in a row, the Royals will once again have room in the outfield for Canha, who started in right Saturday and went 2-for-4 with a walk. The veteran has been used primarily as a short-side platoon player this season, so his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching could be limited once Isbel moves past the illness.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Activated from injured list

The Royals reinstated Canha (hip) from the injured list Saturday. A left abductor strain sent Canha to the injured list April 9, and he'll now rejoin the active roster following a minimum-length stay on the IL. The 36-year-old veteran played three rehab games at Triple-A Omaha, during which he went 2-for-10 with three runs scored. With Canha fully healthy and MJ Melendez now in Triple-A, the former is likely to see increased playing time in left field going forward.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Set to begin rehab assignment

Canha (hip) is expected to begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Canha landed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a left abductor strain that he suffered when colliding with the outfield wall while attempting to catch a flyball against the Twins on Tuesday. He's progressed enough in his recovery to embark on a rehab assignment, but it's unclear whether he'll be activated from the IL when eligible April 19. Canha went 5-for-14 with two walks and four runs scored prior to his injury.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Lands on IL with abductor strain

The Royals placed Canha on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left abductor strain. Canha suffered the injury during Tuesday's contest against the Twins, when he collided with the outfield wall while attempting a catch. He'll be eligible to return from the IL on April 19, but it's not clear whether he'll have a chance to be ready by that date. Drew Waters was called up from Triple-A Omaha to take Canha's spot on the 26-man active roster.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Collides with wall, exits game

Canha was removed from Tuesday's game against the Twins due to left hip soreness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports Canha ran into the outfield wall while attempting to catch a flyball in the fifth inning. He remained in the game immediately after the incident but was replaced on defense when the Royals took the field in the top of the sixth. The severity of his injury remains unknown, but fantasy managers can consider him day-to-day for the time being.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Officially added to roster

The Royals selected Canha's contract from Triple-A Omaha on Monday. Canha was acquired via trade from the Brewers last week with the anticipation that he would be added to the roster, and the Royals have now made that move official. The 36-year-old should operate mostly in a reserve role, although he might see some starts at first base early on if Vinnie Pasquantino (hamstring) has to miss time.

  • Royals' Mark Canha: Shipped to KC

The Brewers traded Canha to the Royals on Friday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Canha was unlikely to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster after going just 2-for-23 with two RBI and four runs scored in nine spring contests. The Royals will gladly take him in, however, and Rogers notes that the 36-year-old veteran will be part of the big-league squad's bench. Because he was on a minor-league deal with Milwaukee, Canha will need to be added to Kansas City's 40-man roster first.

  • Brewers' Mark Canha: Viewed as first base, DH option

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Monday that the club is looking at Canha primarily as an option at first base, designated hitter and pinch hitter, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Most of Canha's experience at the major-league level is as an outfielder, but it sounds like the Brewers would use him there only in a pinch. The 36-year-old is in camp as a non-roster invitee, but he should have a good chance to make Milwaukee's Opening Day roster. Canha struggled in 2024, slashing .242/.344/.346 in 125 games between the Tigers and Giants.

  • Brewers' Mark Canha: Inks minor-league deal with Brewers

Milwaukee signed Canha to a minor-league contract Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Canha went through most of the offseason without garnering interest from a team, but he will get a chance to catch on with the Brewers for the 2025 campaign. He ended the 2024 regular season with the Cardinals after being traded by the Tigers in July, but he suffered a right thumb sprain in late September that resulted in him being placed on the 10-day IL. He finished the 2024 regular season slashing .242/.344/.346 with seven stolen bases, seven home runs and 42 RBI across 462 plate appearances. If he does manage to make the Opening Day roster, the 36-year-old Canha won't likely serve in more than a complementary role behind Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick.

  • Giants' Mark Canha: To IL with thumb sprain

Canha was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right thumb sprain. Canha has played his final game of 2024 and will enter free agency this offseason. The righty-hitting 35-year-old will be eligible at first base and outfield in fantasy next year, but he only managed seven home runs and seven steals in 462 plate appearances this season.

  • Giants' Mark Canha: Logs steal in win

Canha went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Monday's 6-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Canha hasn't seen much more than a short-side platoon role since he was traded from the Tigers to the Giants at the deadline. He's batting .282 with San Francisco, though he has just two extra-base hits (both doubles) and four RBI across 30 games with the team. Overall, Canha has a .240/.343/.343 slash line with seven home runs, 42 RBI, 45 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 123 games this season.
