The Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday, and Ray has already logged 182.1 innings in 2025 after missing most of the previous two seasons with injury, so he'll shut things down a little early. The 33-year-old finishes with a 3.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 186:73 K:BB covering 32 starts. JT Brubaker will start for the Giants on Wednesday.

He allowed a solo home run to Miguel Rojas in the second inning, followed by back-to-back blasts by Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts in the fifth, which collectively accounted for the rest of the runs on Ray's line. This was the fourth time in five starts that Ray fell short of the five-inning mark. He's now at a 3.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 186:73 K:BB through 182.1 innings over 32 starts this season. Ray opened with a flourish, striking out Shohei Ohtani on a 96 mph fastball to begin a clean first inning, but he quickly found himself laboring against a patient Los Angeles lineup. The southpaw issued four walks and needed 98 pitches (58 strikes) to get through just four frames, with his night ending in the fifth after giving up a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts followed by back-to-back hits from Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman. Over his last seven outings, the 33-year-old has struggled to a 6.06 ERA and 28:12 K:BB across 35.2 innings, and he'll look to steady things in his next scheduled start, a rematch against the Dodgers.

Ray allowed fewer than three runs for the first time in his last six starts, and he got back to the five-inning mark for the first time since Aug. 24 versus the Brewers. The southpaw gave up both runs in the fifth frame, but the Giants were able to keep their lead the rest of the way. The recent shaky stretch has done a bit of damage to Ray's overall numbers, which are now at a 3.32 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 176:67 K:BB through 173.2 innings across 30 starts. He's projected to make his next start early next week in a rematch with the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Ray was staked to a 4-0 lead through three frames, but he gave up the advantage when the Rockies scored five times across the fourth and fifth innings. The lefty did manage an impressive 19 whiffs and eight punchouts, but he's now allowed 11 runs (10 earned) over nine innings across his past two games to nudge his season ERA up to 3.31. Ray will look to post a better line in his next start, which lines up to come against Arizona early next week.

Ray had some trouble with Ryan Mountcastle, who drove in four of the six runs on the southpaw's line. However, the Giants' offense was even better, helping Ray to avoid the loss. The 33-year-old had a mediocre August, allowing 19 runs (16 earned) over 35 innings across six starts for the month. On the year, he's at a 3.18 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 163:64 K:BB through 164 innings over 28 starts. His next outing is projected to be in Colorado.
Ray did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. He didn't record a strikeout.
While Ray was able to limit the damage for the most part Sunday, it was a shaky outing overall for the left-hander, who issued four free passes while failing to record a strikeout for the first time this season. Ray had been pitching well coming into the day, posting a 2.59 ERA in his previous five starts (31.1 innings). Overall, he's 10-6 with a 2.93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 158:61 K:BB across 27 starts spanning 159.2 innings this season. Ray is currently slated to face the Orioles at home his next time out.
