The newly formed MLB Draft League announced Monday that Gyorko accepted a managerial position with one of its six founding teams, the West Virginia Black Bears.
With the 32-year-old Gyorko having committed to instruct draft-eligible prospects this summer, he'll presumably close the curtains on an 11-year professional career. Gyorko spent the past eight of those seasons in MLB, seeing action with the Padres, Cardinals, Dodgers and Brewers. Over 847 career games, Gyorko slashed .245/.310/.424 with 121 home runs and 370 RBI.
The Brewers declined Gyorko's $4.5 million club option for 2021, freelance baseball writer Robert Murray reports.
The 32-year-old was a strong contributor for the Brewers during the shortened season, as he posted a career-best .837 OPS with nine home runs and 17 RBI in 43 games. Gyorko had most of his success against LHPs (1.048 OPS in 57 plate appearances) and struggled against RHPs with a .699 OPS and 32.1 percent strikeout rate (78 plate appearances). The veteran infielder seems likely to compete in a platoon during spring training, wherever he lands.

Injuries limited Gyorko to 62 games last season and contributed to him finishing the campaign with a lowly .498 OPS. According to the report, "Gyorko said he is as healthy as he's been and feels like he has plenty left," and the Brewers will give him a chance to prove that, at least in some capacity. Gyorko possesses the defensive versatility the Brewers seek in their part-time players, but the club does have several other players capable of filling his role, so his hold on a roster spot will be somewhat tenuous.
