  • Yankees' Rob Brantly: Inks minor-league deal with NYY

The Yankees signed Brantly to a minor-league contract Tuesday, Conor Foley of YES Network reports.

Brantly spent portions of the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the Yankees organization, and he'll return to the team a week after being waived by the Marlins. The catcher will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 41 plate appearances for Triple-A Jacksonville this season, Brantly slashed .359/.390/.590 with six doubles and a homer.

  • Rob Brantly: Cut by Miami

The Marlins released Brantly on Monday.

Brantly appeared in three games for the Marlins in April before landing on the injured list due to a strained right lat and then knee inflammation before he was designated for assignment July 14 once he was activated. The veteran backstop accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville after clearing waivers, but he'll end up being cut loose despite slashing .359/.390/.590 over 41 plate appearances with Miami's top affiliate. Now a free agent, Brantly could land a minor-league deal with an organization that's short on catching depth.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Marlins outrighted Brantly to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

He's no longer on the 40-man roster, but Brantly will remain in the organization as catching depth. The 35-year-old went 3-for-7 at the plate earlier this season for Miami before missing nearly three months with a right lat strain, and later, a knee issue.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Activated, DFA'd by Marlins

The Marlins activated Brantly (lat/knee) from the 60-day injured list and designated him for assignment Monday.

Brantly was placed on the 15-day injured list April 21 due to a right lat strain, and he was later transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. He'll head to waivers following Monday's transaction and could stick around in the Miami organization as catching depth at Triple-A Jacksonville if he goes unclaimed.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Cleared to resume rehab assignment

Brantly (lat/knee) was cleared to resume his rehab assignment at Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.

Brantly didn't end up playing Sunday after Jacksonville's game against Charlotte was rained out, but the veteran catcher seems to be healthy again after left knee inflammation caused him to be pulled off his previous assignment with the Triple-A club about three weeks ago. The 35-year-old was initially placed on the injured list April 21 due to a right lat strain, though that injury no longer appears to be much of a concern. Once he completes his rehab assignment, Brantly could be activated from the 60-day IL and designated for assignment, as the Marlins are already carrying three catchers (Agustin Ramirez, Nick Fortes and Liam Hicks) on the 26-man active roster and wouldn't appear to have room for him.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Begins rehab assignment

Brantly (lat) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Brantly has missed nearly two months of action with a right lat strain. With the Marlins already carrying three catcher on their active roster, Brantly is a good bet to be designated for assignment once activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Moved to 60-day IL

The Marlins transferred Brantly (lat) to the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Brantly landed on the injured list April 21 with a strained right lat, and moving to the 60-day IL will ensure he remains out until at least late June. He'll concede his spot on the 40-man roster to Janson Junk, who was selected to the active roster Saturday.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Sent to IL with lat strain

The Marlins placed Brantly (lat) on the 10-day injured list Monday.

Brantly has been diagnosed with a strained right lat. The Marlins have promoted top catching prospect Agustin Ramirez to take Brantly's place on the roster.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Three hits in Thursday's loss

Brantly went 3-for-3 with an RBI in Thursday's loss to the Diamondbacks.

The veteran backstop picked up his first hits and first RBI of 2025 in his second game for the Marlins this season. Brantly doesn't offer a lot of upside at the plate given his career .227/.287/.325 slash line in the majors, but with Liam Hicks struggling (.522 OPS over 45 plate appearances), Brantly could see more playing time than expected while Nick Fortes (oblique) is on the shelf.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Making 2025 debut Sunday

Brantly is starting at catcher and batting ninth against the Nationals on Sunday.

Brantly will make his first major-league start of the season Sunday as Liam Hicks gets a rest day. Brantly last played for the Marlins in 2013, slashing .211/.263/.265 with 15 walks, 11 runs scored, one home run and 18 RBI across 243 plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Called up to Miami

The Marlins selected Brantly's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Brantly will return to the majors to provide catching depth alongside Liam Hicks while Nick Fortes (oblique) is on the injured list. While Brantly has seen action in parts of nine major-league seasons, he has not reached even 100 plate appearances in a big-league campaign since 2013. He is yet to get into a regular-season game at any level this season.

  • Marlins' Rob Brantly: Lands in Miami

Brantly signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Brantly spent all of last season in the Rays organization, slashing .250/.316/.394 with 19 RBI across 177 plate appearances. The 35-year-old backstop has only played in 12 MLB games dating back to 2019, however, so there's little hope for him to serve as more than minor-league depth.

  • Rob Brantly: Chooses to become free agent

Brantly elected free agency Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Brantly had a brief stint in the majors last season, playing in three games and going 1-for-9 with the Rays in late August. That MLB action was his first since the 2022 campaign, and he's played in just 12 contests in the big leagues overall since 2017 while spending time with six different organizations. Brantly would likely need to accept a minor-league deal in order to latch on with a new squad.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Clears waivers

The Rays outrighted Brantly to Triple-A Durham on Monday.

While Ben Rortvedt was on the paternity list last week, the Rays briefly added Brantly to the 40-man roster and had him serve as the No. 2 catcher for the big club behind Alex Jackson. Before the Rays cast him off the 40-man roster when Rortvedt rejoined the team Saturday, Brantly went 1-for-9 while appearing in three games, marking his first big-league action since the 2022 campaign. The 35-year-old backstop will now head back to Durham, but he could get another call-up in September if Rortvedt or Jackson misses time or if the Rays want to carry a third catcher.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Dropped from 40-man

The Rays designated Brantly for assignment Saturday.

The return of Ben Rortvedt from the family emergency list will leave Brantly without a spot on the active and 40-man rosters. The 35-year-old backstop went 1-for-9 over three games during his stint with the Rays, and the owns a .741 OPS across 155 plate appearances in the minors.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Summoned from Triple-A

The Rays selected Brantly's contract from Triple-A Durham on Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.

He'll serve as the backup catcher behind Alex Jackson while Ben Rortvedt (personal) is away on paternity leave. Brantly is a career .225/.287/.326 hitter over parts of eight big-league seasons and sports a .741 OPS with Durham in 2024.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Part of taxi squad

Brantly is in Tampa Bay on the Rays' taxi squad for the weekend series against the Diamondbacks, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Ben Rortvedt is expected to go on paternity leave soon, so Brantly is with the team. Brantly has spent all of 2024 with Triple-A Durham and is slashing .271/.390/.361 with five home runs and 17 RBI.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Can't capture roster spot

Brantly was informed Friday that he did not make the big-league roster out of spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Brantly joined the Rays on a minor-league deal in January, and he was in the mix to back up Rene Pinto behind the dish. He hit well across 16 plate appearances in Grapefruit League action, and the team has said they hope to keep Brantly in the organization to serve as depth.

  • Rays' Rob Brantly: Gets deal with Tampa Bay

Brantly signed a minor-league contract with the Rays on Monday.

The deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, where Brantly will presumably get the chance to compete for the Rays' No. 2 catching gig heading into Opening Day. The 34-year-old journeyman backstop spent last season in the Toronto organization, slashing .271/.390/.361 over 177 plate appearances with Triple-A Buffalo before he was cut loose in July.

  • Rob Brantly: Cut by Jays

The Blue Jays released Brantly on Friday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Brantly was slashing .271/.390/.361 across 177 plate appearances with Triple-A Buffalo, and he'll now attempt to latch on with a new organization. His performance should earn him a minor-league deal, though a promotion to the majors this season remains unlikely.
