  • Panthers' Christian McCaffrey: Unlikely to play Friday

McCaffrey isn't expected to suit up for Friday's preseason contest against the Bills, Max Henson of the Panthers' official site reports.

McCaffrey will again be on the sidelines while the coaching staff gets a look at the rest of the backfield, which includes Cameron Artis-Payne, Jordan Scarlett, Reggie Bonnafon and Elijah Holyfield. There's a chance McCaffrey makes a cameo in preseason Week 3 in New England, but even if he doesn't take the field he's secure in his standing as one of the few workhorse running backs in the NFL.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Not suiting up Friday

Montgomery isn't expected to play in Friday's preseason contest versus the Giants.

Montgomery got a fair amount of work during the Bears' exhibition opener, taking three carries for 16 yards and a TD and hauling in three passes for 30 yards. While Montgomery theoretically has some competition for early-down reps in the form of Mike Davis, he may not get another chance to suit up before the regular season if coach Matt Nagy has his way. Look for Montgomery to get plenty of work once Week 1 rolls around.

  • Chase Edmonds RB | WAS

Cardinals' Chase Edmonds: Nabs two catches Thursday

Edmonds had two catches for 31 yards during Thursday's preseason loss to the Raiders.

Working with the second-team offense yet again, Edmonds hauled in those passes from backup QB Brett Hundley, both of them for first-down gains. Meanwhile, Edmonds' sole carry was negated by a penalty. With David Johnson scooping up the vast majority of backfield reps, Edmonds will have a difficult time being a regular meaningful contributor, but the coaching staff is making a concerted effort to ensure he'll get reps weekly during the regular season. At the very least, Edmonds' ability as a pass catcher will help him spell Johnson on occasion.

  • Saquon Barkley RB | PHI

Giants' Saquon Barkley: Not suiting up Friday

Barkley won't play in Friday's preseason game against the Bears, Kimberly Jones of NFL Network reports.

For the second exhibition in a row, Barkley will remain on the sideline. There's little for him to prove anyway, but the Giants likely want him to get some in-game reps before the start of the regular season. His next opportunity to do so comes next Thursday in Cincinnati.

  • Keith Ford RB | IND

Packers' Keith Ford: Two touches Thursday

Ford had one carry for 10 yards and one reception for three yards in Thursday's preseason loss to the Ravens.

Ford played just nine snaps Thursday, but he still got a couple chances to touch the ball. He did gain a bit of ground on his lone tote, but didn't really see enough opportunity to improve his chances of making the cut.

  • Josh Jacobs RB | GB

Raiders' Josh Jacobs: Not satisfied with debut

Coach Jon Gruden is pleased with Jacobs' performance, but the rookie said he left some yards on the field in Thursday's 33-26 preseason win over Arizona, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports. "I like [Jacobs]," Gruden said. "He's really picked up the offense fast, he's improved in the passing game. We're really excited about him."

Jacobs took four carries for 21 yards in his pro debut, getting all of his work within the first five snaps of the game. He believes he missed some opportunities to rip off a long run, yet also acknowledged that the game has "slowed down" for him after a few weeks of practice in training camp. The first-round pick is primed for the lead role in Oakland's backfield, but Jalen Richard will get playing time on passing downs, and Doug Martin could poach some carries. Development as a receiving threat, pass blocker and short-yardage back would go a long way toward helping Jacobs secure hefty workloads.

  • 49ers' Raheem Mostert: Remains out with concussion

Mostert (concussion) isn't at practice Friday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

After suffering a concussion in the preseason opener, Mostert isn't likely to play in Monday's exhibition against the Cowboys. A path to snaps on offense may have opened up with the recent news suggesting Jerick McKinnon (knee) may not be ready for Week 1. Of course, the 49ers still have Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida at the top of their depth chart, so Mostert's biggest impact may come on special teams.

  • Boston Scott RB | PIT

Eagles' Boston Scott: Sees significant action Thursday

Scott (ankle) rushed seven times for 43 yards and one touchdown in Thursday's preseason game against the Jaguars.

Scott was held out of the preseason opener with an ankle injury, but he was ready to go for the second week of the preseason. The 24-year-old is coming off a rookie season in which he didn't play an offensive snap in two games, and he's facing tough odds to make the 53-man roster given the quality of backs already in the backfield.

  • Packers' Jamaal Williams: Misses another exhibition

Williams (hamstring) didn't play in Thursday's preseason loss to the Ravens.

Aaron Jones also was held out, but he returned to practice this past week and warmed up in pads before Thursday's contest. Williams, on the other hand, has missed all of training camp and now the first two weeks of the preseason. All signs point toward Jones handling a large workload Week 1 in Chicago.

  • Thomas Rawls RB | JAC

Jaguars' Thomas Rawls: Struggles with added workload

Rawls had seven carries for 19 yards and three catches for 19 yards in Thursday's preseason loss to the Eagles.

With Leonard Fournette resting and Ryquell Armstead (head) unavailable, Alfred Blue got the start at running back before exiting with an ankle injury. Rawls didn't do much with his chances, but he at least was better than Devante Mays, who lost one yard on five carries and gained 15 yards on two catches. Jacksonville's backup running back situation remains precarious, giving Rawls a real shot at a Week 1 roster spot, even after he missed time at training camp with a hamstring.
