Jermar Jefferson RB | MIN
Lions' Jermar Jefferson: Stock falling
Jefferson rushed seven times for 25 yards during Saturday's preseason win over Indianapolis.
With neither of D'Andre Swift or Jamaal Williams in action, Jefferson was third to rotate in at running back behind interim starter Craig Reynolds and Justin Jackson, who gained 54 yards on the same amount of carries as Jefferson. Each of these guys plus Godwin Igwebuike should get more opportunities to prove their worth in the preseason finale next Sunday in Pittsburgh, but Jefferson seems to be headed in the wrong direction in advance of roster cuts.

Saquon Barkley RB | PHI
Giants' Saquon Barkley: May not play Sunday
The Giants' coaching staff is rethinking plans to have starters such as Barkley and Daniel Jones play in Sunday's preseason contest against Cincinnati, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Barkley, Jones and most other healthy starters originally were expected to play in the second preseason contest -- as they did in the first -- but the team's offensive line is so banged up that head coach Brian Daboll may instead elect to hold key starters out. Leonard notes that the Giants are down to their sixth-string center for the game against the Bengals, and the staff no doubt values keeping starters healthy over allowing them to play a few series in an exhibition contest.

Khalil Herbert RB | SF
Bears' Khalil Herbert: Limited Sunday
Herbert (undisclosed) didn't participate in team drills during Sunday's practice, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
With Alyssa Barbieri of the USA Today relaying that Herbert was carted off during Saturday's practice with an unspecified injury, his quick return to the field is encouraging. As long as Herbert can practice fully in the coming days, the running back will be a candidate to log snaps in Saturday's preseason finale against the Browns.

Malik Davis RB | DAL
Cowboys' Malik Davis: Pushing for roster spot
Davis carried the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for six yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers.
The undrafted rookie out of Florida continues to make a good impression as he fights for a spot on the Cowboys' initial 53-man roster. Rico Dowdle also scored a rushing TD in the game, however, and Dallas may not have room for both on the backfield depth chart behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. According to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News, Davis has shown enough promise in camp and the preseason that he likely won't clear waivers if the Cowboys try to place him on the practice squad, so he could wind up making his NFL debut with a team in more need of help at RB.

Nick Chubb RB | HOU
Browns' Nick Chubb: Not in line to play Sunday
Chubb is not in line to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Eagles, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
The same applies to Jacoby Brissett, Deshaun Watson, Amari Cooper, Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney, with Chubb's next chance to suit up for preseason action arriving Saturday against the Bears.
-
David Montgomery RB | HOU
Bears' David Montgomery: Not expected to play Saturday
Montgomery (undisclosed) and the Chicago starters are unlikely to play Saturday against Cleveland, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
Montgomery currently is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Assuming he and other key Bears sit out, he'll play next Week 1 against the 49ers, as long as he's recovered from his health concern.
-
Ty Chandler RB | NO
Vikings' Ty Chandler: Another strong preseason showing
Chandler (ankle) had five carries for 19 yards, including a three-yard touchdown, in Saturday's loss to San Francisco.
Chandler missed practice time last week due to a sore ankle, but it doesn't look like anything to worry about. He had a second solid performance which will keep him in the mix for the No. 3 running back role with Kene Nwangwu.
-
Khalil Herbert RB | SF
Bears' Khalil Herbert: Back at practice
Herbert, who left practice early Saturday with an unspecified issue, participated in Sunday's session, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Though it's unclear what caused the running back's departure from Saturday's session, Herbert's quick return to the field indicates that he was dealing with a minor issue. It remains to be seen if Herbert will play in the Bears' preseason finale next weekend, but as Week 1 approaches, the 2021 sixth-rounder continues to profile as David Montgomery's top backup/complementary option.

Kene Nwangwu RB | NYJ
Vikings' Kene Nwangwu: Four total touches
Nwangwu gained four yards on two carries and also recorded two receptions for eight yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the 49ers.
Nwangwu worked behind Alexander Mattison while Dalvin Cook (rest) sat out. He saw carries on only two offensive possessions, however, and didn't have any meaningful production. Nwangwu figures to do the majority of his production as Minnesota's kick returner this season, assuming the backfield remains relatively healthy.
