  • Zack Moss RB | CIN

Colts' Zack Moss: Not practicing yet

Though Moss has yet to return to practice, James Boyd of The Athletic notes that the running back was spotted Thursday without a cast or brace on his right arm.

With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) on the reserve/PUP list and thus set to miss at least four games to begin the season, Moss' status gains import as Week 1 approaches. If he's able to practice soon, Moss -- who is bouncing back from a broken arm -- would be a candidate to absorb a portion of the Colts' rushing duties versus the Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 10. Also in the mix to help fill in for Taylor are Deon Jackson and rookie fifth-rounder Evan Hull.

  • Dolphins' Raheem Mostert: Becomes clear lead back

The Dolphins look primed to lean on Mostert as the clear No. 1 backfield option Week 1 versus the Chargers with Jeff Wilson (abdomen) now on IR and De'Von Achane (shoulder) still not taking contact at practice, Mike Jones of the Athletic reports.

Mostert led Miami on the ground last season with 181 carries for 891 yards and three scores across 16 games, but he split time relatively evenly with Wilson when both were healthy and on the field. The two appeared primed for another timeshare to start the 2023 campaign, with Achane also mixing in when 100 percent, but Wilson's placement on IR leaves Mostert as a candidate for workhorse status to begin the year. Achane, a rookie third-round pick, could be the primary beneficiary of increased touches when healthy, but he was still in a red jersey at practice Wednesday and is considered week-to-week. Salvon Ahmed (neck) is the next best candidate to spell Mostert in Week 1's season opener against the Chargers, but he's currently day-to-day. UDFA Chris Brooks is the only other RB on the Dolphins' roster.

  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Return this season not ruled out

Coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that he "wouldn't be surprised" if Wilson (abdomen), who the Dolphins placed on IR, is able to return this season, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.

Wilson will be eligible to return from IR after missing at least a requisite four games, but McDaniel's hesitancy to guarantee an expected return date could hint at a longer recovery for the veteran running back. He's dealing with two separate issues, per David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, injuries to both his midsection and finger. Wilson's absence, however long it may ultimately be, paves the way for Raheem Mostert to achieve workhorse volume, unless the Dolphins opt to limit his touch totals to preserve his health. Salvon Ahmed (neck) is expected to resume practicing soon while De'Von Achane (shoulder) appears more up-in-the-air for Week 1, and Chris Brooks is the only other running back on the team's active roster.

  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Could return later this year

Wilson is recovering from midsection and finger injuries, with coach Mike McDaniel saying Thursday that he "wouldn't be surprised" if the running back comes back from injured reserve later this season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Wilson left practice early Aug. 9 and subsequently missed the rest of the preseason, leaving more reps for De'Von Achane (shoulder), Salvon Ahmed (neck) and Chris Brooks behind probable starter Raheem Mostert. Only Mostert and Brooks were healthy at the end of the preseason, but Achane and Ahmed could join them in the coming days/weeks, whereas Wilson needs more time to rest/heal. Wilson is ineligible through Week 4, making Oct. 8 against the Giants his earliest possible date for a 2023 debut.

  • Lew Nichols RB | PIT

Packers' Lew Nichols: Reverts to IR

Nichols (shoulder) reverted to the Packers' injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Nichols continues to manage a shoulder injury that sidelined him much of training camp. He's set to miss the entire 2023 season due to the timing of his placement on IR, unless he and Green Bay can agree on an injury settlement.

  • Josh Jacobs RB | GB

Raiders' Josh Jacobs: Returns to practice

Jacobs practiced Wednesday for the first time since last season, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

Jacobs and the Raiders reached an agreement over the weekend to pay the running back about $1.7 million more than he would've made under the franchise tag. He says he's happy with the arrangement and doesn't harbor any hard feelings toward GM Dave Ziegler or the Raiders organization. The shaky depth behind him combined with last year's huge numbers suggest Jacobs is headed for another busy season, starting with a Week 1 trip to Denver for a 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday kickoff.

  • Salvon Ahmed RB | CHI

Dolphins' Salvon Ahmed: Day-to-day with neck injury

Ahmed is considered day-to-day with a neck injury, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.

Ahmed was removed from Saturday's preseason finale against Jacksonville and didn't return despite clearing concussion protocol. It turns out he has a neck injury, though apparently not a serious one. With De'Von Achane (shoulder) also banged up and Jeff Wilson (undisclosed) on injured reserve for at least the first four games, Miami's healthy RBs are projected starter Raheem Mostert and undrafted rookie Chris Brooks. If Ahmed moves past the neck injury quickly he could get some touches Week 1 at the Chargers.

  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Placed on IR

The Dolphins placed Wilson (undisclosed) on injured reserve Thursday, ruling him out for the first four games.

Wilson initially left practice early Aug. 9 and didn't play in any of Miami's preseason games. He's now ineligible for the first four weeks of the regular season, though the team hasn't provided details on the nature of his injury. Fellow RBs De'Von Achane (shoulder) and Salvon Ahmed (head) also picked up injuries this August, but so far neither has been ruled out for Week 1 at the Chargers.

  • Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Team open to mending relationship

General manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday that he thinks Taylor (ankle) and the Colts can still repair their relationship, Gregg Doyel of The Indianapolis Star reports.

Ballard said he "won't quit on the relationship" even though "the situation sucks" for player, team and fans. For what it's worth, Doyel disagrees with the GM's assessment that things can be fixed, noting that Taylor has made it clear he's done with the Colts. Taylor is ineligible for the first four games of the season on the PUP list and reportedly still has some pain in his surgically repaired ankle, but the Colts can trade him in the meantime if they're willing to rethink a self-imposed Tuesday deadline. Zack Moss (arm), Deon Jackson and Evan Hull are the three running backs on Indy's initial 53-man roster.

  • Nick Bawden RB | HOU

Jets' Nick Bawden: Re-signs after release

Bawden re-signed with the Jets on Thursday after the team released him Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.

Bawden's return isn't exactly surprising, as the Jets didn't have a true fullback on the 53-man roster following his release. After missing the entire 2022 season, Bawden will work to bounce back in 2023. He stands to contribute mostly as a blocker, opening up lanes for Breece Hall (knee) and Dalvin Cook.
