  • Sean Tucker RB | TB

Buccaneers' Sean Tucker: Could carve out complementary role

Tucker is in the mix along with Chase Edmonds and Ke'Shawn Vaughn to see complementary work behind top back Rachaad White during the upcoming season, Buccaneers' official site reports.

When it comes to how the touches that don't go to White will be divided, offensive coordinator Dave Canales expects to employ a committee approach. With that in mind, Edmonds has a chance to make his mark in passing situations, while some combination of Tucker, White and Edmonds could be used to spell White on early downs. In that context, Tucker doesn't have a clearly defined role as Sunday's season opener at Minnesota approaches, but the undrafted rookie out of Syracuse profiles as a player to monitor in order to see how the Buccaneers' backfield pecking order shakes out as the 2023 campaign progresses.

  • Broncos' Jaleel McLaughlin: Poised to contribute in 2023

McLaughlin could have an immediate impact this season as Denver's No. 3 running back, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports.

After an outstanding training camp and preseason, McLaughlin has done everything he can to impress the Broncos' coaching staff and earn a spot as one of the team's three running backs behind Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine. The undrafted rookie has proven to be a playmaker, and it's possible that head coach Sean Payton, who is known to use multiple backs, could find ways to get him touches. McLaughlin's speed, vision and acceleration through holes make him an attractive option out of the backfield and should have him in the mix as a kick returner, as well. Though the 22-year-old has shown great potential, he'll likely be difficult to rely on for consistent fantasy production barring an injury to Williams or Perine.

  • De'Von Achane RB | MIA

Dolphins' De'Von Achane: Sheds non-contact jersey

Achane (shoulder) is practicing Monday without a red non-contact jersey, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.

Achane taking contact again represents a significant step forward in his recovery from a lingering shoulder injury. The rookie third-round pick will continue to do all he can to gain clearance for Sunday's game against the Chargers, as, with Jeff Wilson (abdomen) on IR, he would face significant opportunity if healthy. If Achane can't go Week 1, however, Salvon Ahmed (neck) could get a chance to work as the top backup to Raheem Mostert.

  • Zack Moss RB | CIN

Colts' Zack Moss: Progressing, Week 1 status TBD

Coach Shane Steichen noted Monday that Moss, who is bouncing back from a broken right arm, is "progressing well," James Boyd of The Athleticreports.

The report adds that Steichen didn't provide a definitive statement on whether Moss will be available for Sunday's season opener against the Jaguars. If the 2020 third-rounder isn't ready to play this weekend, Deon Jackson and rookie fifth-rounder Evan Hull would be in line to lead Indy's backfield, with practice squad members Jake Funk and Jason Huntley options to be elevated ahead of Week 1 action.

  • Zander Horvath RB | MIA

Zander Horvath: Joins Steelers' practice squad

Pittsburgh signed Horvath to its practice squad Monday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

The 2022 seventh-round pick was waived by the Chargers less than a week ago, but he's already found another opportunity with a new team. As long as Connor Heyward remains healthy, it's unlikely Horvath is elevated to the active roster any time soon.

  • Falcons' Cordarrelle Patterson: Looking unsure for opener

Patterson (undisclosed) didn't practice Monday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Patterson has been sidelined since mid-August with an unspecified soft-tissue injury. He's thus in danger of missing Week 1 against Carolina, though it isn't clear that will have much impact on the offensive game plan for a team with Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier in the backfield. Even if he's healthy, Patterson might just be the No. 3 RB and kick returner at this point.

  • Texans' Dare Ogunbowale: Returns to practice

Ogunbowale (undisclosed) practiced Monday after missing Houston's final two preseason games, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It's an encouraging sign for his potential availability for Sunday's game at Baltimore. When healthy, Ogunbowale figures to compete with Devin Singletary for work on obvious passing downs in 2023.

  • Chris Evans RB | CIN

Bengals' Chris Evans: Present for practice

Evans (undisclosed) was present for Monday's practice, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.

Evans sat out the Bengals' preseason finale, but now that he's back on the field, the 2021 sixth-rounder will look to secure a change-of-pace role behind top back Joe Mixon. Also in the mix for complementary touches out of the Bengals backfield are rookie Chase Brown and Trayveon Williams (ankle), but if Evans ends up absorbing a good chunk of the team's third-down duties, he could gain fantasy utility in deeper PPR formats.

  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Should return after four games

Wilson (knee) should be ready to return from the injured list Week 5 according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Coach Mike McDaniel was vague about Wilson's expected return timetable after the running back's initial placement on IR, but it looks like he may miss only four games after all. Wilson is dealing with injuries to his midsection and finger, the details of which have yet to be disclosed in full. With Wilson out a minimum of four games, Raheem Mostert looks set to begin the 2023 campaign as Miami's clear lead back. Rookie third-round pick De'Von Achane (shoulder) will resume practicing Monday, so he could handle the No. 2 role if he's cleared for Week 1.

  • De'Von Achane RB | MIA

Dolphins' De'Von Achane: Returning to practice

Coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Achane (shoulder) is expected to participate in practice, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Achane will practice for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury in preseason action Aug. 19. Even assuming the rookie third-round pick is limited in his return to the field Monday, that would represent a positive step in the right direction as he works to gain clearance for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Chargers. With Jeff Wilson (abdomen) on IR, Achane could get an opportunity to immediately operate as the No. 2 option behind starting running back Raheem Mostert, when healthy.
