Kenny Pickett QB | CAR
Raiders' Kenny Pickett: Set to back up Smith
Pickett (hamstring) was traded from the Browns to the Raiders on Monday in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
The Browns had a logam at quarterback, while the Raiders recently lost their projected backup, Aidan O'Connell (wrist,) for at least six weeks. That makes this trade logical for both sides, with Pickett now in line to back up Geno Smith for the Raiders, assuming he is healthy enough to suit up Week 1. While Pickett has been a disappointment given his first-round pedigree, he should be servicable relative to other backups if called upon.

Bryce Perkins QB | CAR
Bryce Perkins: Let go by Carolina
Perkins was waived by the Panthers on Monday, Darin Gantt of the team's official website reports.
Perkins signed with the Panthers on Aug. 17, completing 10 of 11 passes for 71 yards, while also adding two rushes for 28 yards in Thursday's 19-10 loss to the Steelers. Although he enjoyed plenty of success the last two springs with the UFL's Michigan Panthers, Perkins hasn't appeared in an NFL contest since 2022, and he'll likely have to settle for a practice-squad spot ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Payton Thorne QB | CIN
Payton Thorne: Waived by Cincinnati
The Bengals waived Thorne on Monday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
Thorne joined the Bengals in late April as an undrafted free agent. The only preseason game he played in was against Indianapolis on Saturday, when he completed four of seven passes for 41 yards. Thorne will explore his next options assuming he clears waivers, which includes staying with the Bengals as a member of the practice squad.

Kyle Allen QB | BUF
Lions' Kyle Allen: Wins backup job in Detroit
Allen is in line to begin the 2025 regular season as the Lions' No. 2 quarterback, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Allen was in a battle with Hendon Hooker for the No. 2 slot at quarterback behind Jared Goff in Detroit, and Allen ultimately won out when Hooker was cut Monday. In Allen's last regular-season start back in 2022 with Houston, he completed 20 of 39 pass attempts for 201 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, adding two rushes for one yard.

Bailey Zappe QB | NYJ
Bailey Zappe: Getting waived
Kansas City waived Zappe on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
As expected, Zappe will not be one of the quarterbacks the Chiefs keep on their final 53-man roster to start the 2025 season. He's on track to become a free agent able to sign with any team, but there's also a chance he ends up back on Kansas City's practice squad.

John Wolford QB | MIN
John Wolford: Let go by Jags
The Jaguars released Wolford on Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Wolford didn't get much run during the preseason, completing nine of 17 passes for 118 yards while adding four carries for 25 yards across three games. He ended the 2024 regular season as the Jaguars' practice-squad quarterback and could remain in Jacksonville in the same role.

Kyle Trask QB | TB
Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Bucs reportedly moving on
The Buccaneers plan to move on from Trask, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Per Fowler, Trask, who is dealing with a minor shoulder issue, is in line to be cut with an injury designation and then revert to IR. Once that happens, the QB will look to reach an injury settlement with the Buccaneers, which would allow him to sign elsewhere once he's healthy. As a result of the looming move, Teddy Bridgewater is set to serve as Baker Mayfield's top backup ahead of Week 1.
-
Clayton Tune QB | GB
Clayton Tune: Cut by Cards
The Cardinals waived Tune on Monday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Tune got plenty of run in Arizona's three preseason games, including playing all 56 offensive snaps this past Saturday against the Raiders. Overall, he completed 30 of 49 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and one interception and rushed nine times for 53 yards. With Kyler Murray and Jacoby Brissett locked in to the top two spots on the QB depth chart, Tune lost out in the number games but is a candidate to be brought back on the team's practice squad.

Teddy Bridgewater QB | DET
Buccaneers' Teddy Bridgewater: Set to back up Mayfield
Bridgewater is line to serve as Baker Mayfield's top backup ahead of Week 1, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Per Fowler, the Buccaneers plan to move on from Kyle Trask, who is dealing with a shoulder issue and is slated to be let go with an injury designation. Fowler notes that in such a scenario, Trask would then revert to IR and subsequently look to reach an injury settlement with the team, which would allow him to sign elsewhere once healthy. Bridgewater last saw regular-season action in 2023 with the Lions.

Hendon Hooker QB | TEN
Hendon Hooker: Time up with Detroit
The Lions waived Hooker on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Hooker, a 2023 third-round pick, entered training camp in competition with Kyle Allen for the No. 2 quarterback gig behind starter Jared Goff, but he ultimately couldn't secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Coach Dan Campbell said after Saturday's 26-7 preseason loss to the Texans, in which Hooker completed six of 11 passes for 70 yards and one interception, that a "change of scenery" could benefit the young signal-caller, per Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. Hooker now will look to secure, and make the most of, an opportunity elsewhere in the league, likely on a practice squad.
