Swanson is not in the lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox. Swanson went 0-for-4 with a run scored in the first game of the twin bill. Nico Hoerner will shift over to shortstop, and Pedro Ramirez will get the start at second base for the Cubs.

Swanson went 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Marlins. Swanson plated all of Chicago's runs in the narrow loss, though he was hoping for more when he came up with a runner on in the bottom of the ninth inning but flew out. The shortstop has played in four games since returning from about a month on the injured list due to an oblique strain, and he's gone 4-for-15 with a home run and three RBI. Swanson may get a break as soon as the Cubs officially clinch a playoff spot, but he should play every day once the postseason rolls around, so long as he remains fully healthy.

Swanson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. The veteran shortstop started the first two games of the series after being reinstated from the injured list Friday, so this is likely just a rest day for him after he went 3-for-7 with a solo homer in those contests. Nico Hoerner is taking Swanson's place at shortstop, which opens up the keystone for Pedro Ramirez.

Swanson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Reds. Playing in his second game back since returning from the injured list, Swanson popped his 19th home run of the season in the ninth inning. The shortstop missed about a month with an oblique strain, though he still has time to record his second straight 20-homer campaign and fifth of his MLB career. While the Cubs figure to ease Swanson back into action to a degree, he should still play frequently during the last week of the regular season with the team fighting for a playoff spot.

The Cubs activated Swanson (oblique) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. He had been sidelined since mid-August with a Grade 2 left oblique strain. Swanson did not go out on a rehab assignment, but he participated in a simulated game at Wrigley Field earlier this week to clear the path for his return. He will take back over at shortstop for the Cubs, with Nico Hoerner returning to second base.
